Wild Arms 4.......ROCKS

Alright, at first I was hesitant on the Hex system, it's not needlessly complex and definitely adds strategy to the battles. I'm about 5 hours in so far. Love the customization options and the story is quite interesting thus far.

Surprisingly enough, the field system is actually MORE interesting than normal. While you don't have nearly as many tools as the traditional Wild Arms games, the areas are quite fun to navigate, and the addition of jumps and double-jumps lends almost a Valkyrie Profile to the field. Plus they did away with the locator system from the last few games. I also enjoy the fact that your HPs are automatically recovered after battle, really allows you to focus on the battle at hand and make the battles more challenging without turning it into a DQ-style grindfest.

Oh and of course the music/anime intro still rocks. *LOVE* Raquel's character.

See? What did I tell ya.

The game is awesome. I'll never understand that "1.5/5" score the game received in OPM (or whatever that mag was).

Enjoy it!

I really, really liked the battle system, not to mention the platforming. Glad to hear you're digging it as well.

Oh?

Sure. The battle and exploration system is totally different and the story, much like past WA games, stands on its own.

How long is the game?
20-25 hours for the main quest. Hidden bosses and sidequests can boost that a bit.

Well the battles actually take thought now. It's the same basic setting, but the plot seems better so far, just got introduced to the cabal of Evil Guys. I dunno, what didn't you like about the games?

How do you guys rate the Wild Arms games? I've only played (and loved) the first one so I'd like to know if the others are worth getting.

Is the battle system true turn based? I can't seem to find a review that tells me for sure... i.e., is it like Digital Devil Saga, Dragon Warrior, Final Fantasy X, etc., or does it have a little timer like FFVII, Magna Carta, etc.

I hope they keep the turn based battle system but lose the dumb-ass encounters in puzzle rooms and insulting "firing off round after round of high-caliber ammunition into someone's face only to have them stand up and ask to be your friend/give a stirring monologue" as in the third one.

So.. tell us more about Four! I want to like it!

1 > 3 > 2

Haven't played Alter Code F or 4

It's turn-based like FFX. So your quicker characters get turns before the slower ones and sometimes they'll totally skip them in order. But you can see the order of the attacks in the bottom portion of the window.

They also show you how much damage each attack will do prior to executing it (you could still miss, of course). I suppose some may not like that particular feature, but I found it useful, as you could plan out perfect battles. It's a shame the battles were random, however, but they didn't occur often enough to bother me.

if u like the 1st one then u'll prolly like the 2nd one. i know i did.

Oooh, didn't realize it was out so soon! Shit, should have picked it up today... BuddyC's got some good taste in RPGs so it's good to see he liked it.

Most reviews have been pretty eh, and even the good reviews say the the story/characters are pretty generic/boring. It would have to have AMAZING gameplay to back that up (which I hear is pretty good), but that combined with the fact I don't think I've read a single review that said it was longer than 20-25 hours kills any chance of me buying this full price. I'll wait for $20 or under.

Edit: And I see it has a 68% at Gamerankings (although to be fair if you take off the one really bad review they have, that'd bump it up to 75% or so). That sounds mediocre to me.

3 > 2 > 1 > ACF IMO

Individually,

WA3 = 9
WA2 = 8.2
WA1 = 8.5
ACF = 7

Someone posted at CAG that starting Sunday (15th), WA4 will be 29.99 at Circuit City. Totally unconfirmed, but if that IS true I might consider getting it at that price.

I've only played the first three titles, but I'd say: III > I > II.

It has been quite a long time since I've played the first, however, so my memory of it is a little hazy... I'm actually planning on playing through it again before picking up Alter Code: F, for that reason. Anyway, that aside, I quite enjoyed III, and there's no doubt in my mind that II brings up the rear for me -- I've given it a shot a couple times now, only to get bored and give up on it each time, which hasn't really happened with any other game for me.

So, you'd rate the original higher than II, but still think II is the better game? Care to explain?

3? Only if you enjoy your games to produce only soporific effects, instead of "excitement" like other games. 1 is the best.

Boring to you, fun for me. WA1 is absolutely dreadful nowadays.

The scores are gameplay, graphics, store, and sound in one neat package. That said,

Individual score != fun with the game

WA1's score is what I gave it back then. The game doesn't hold up as well nowadays. Also, the story and, to a lesser extent, sound were better in WA1 than in WA2. WA2's gameplay was a lot better though. More characters, introduction of the PP system, lots of secret bosses and tons of sidequests.

I'd like to play this, I'm a fan the series, and I want to support a new publisher, but I already have SOOO many games I need to catch up on and not very much time to play them, so I probably won't even get this >:|.

I forget, played WA2/3 a long time ago. Battles seemed a bit boring I guess, but I wasn't too much into RPGs back then. I really liked the music though. Sounds like the battle system in WA4 is better though, so I'll give it a try sometime in the future

Also, Circuit City is selling this game for $29.99 next week, damn cheap

It only retails for $40, so you can use the Best Buy coupon and get it now. If Best Buy actually has the game in this week, anyway. SH3 will retail for $40 as well, just another reason to support XSEED.

Speaking of them, any impressions on WA4's localization?

BB is not stocking this game so you'll just have to wait for CC on Sunday. Localization is excellent as well. I totally agree though, support XSEED pls.

The translation is really good, no grammatical problems and the plot isn't muddled at all. The voice acting is surprisingly good, sounds like they got professional VAs to do it, instead of the Working Designs man on the street method, heh. Although I'm not sure but I think the main character is voiced by the guy who does Naruto on the English dubs.....either way they all do a good job capturing the relevant emotion. Even the opening song is in English and still sounds good.

I was at Target today and there was a nice stack sitting with the PS2 selection.

This game won't be rare...

Might be YMMV, but Circuit City accepts competitor's coupons, which means you may be able to get Wild Arms 4 for as low as $19.99 with next week's sale + coupon

Alright, finally turned the game off after a 10 hour session, lol. About bashed my head in trying to figure out the final part of the lava tunnel, took me FOREVER and I think I leveled 3 times before figuring out how to turn off the encounters in there and then how to escape. Damn fun game, learned my first few combination attacks and they're a regular butt-whoopin'.

Though I really *HAD* to know better.... do not use the Seal Key on the Skyway on the "creepy" looking thing at level 24. You *MAY* get your ass whooped by one of the secret bosses, hehe.

Finally got this from Gamefly...

...story is the same stupid psychobabble shit that plagued the final third of Wild Arms 3, and all of the bad guys act like they came out of some B-list 80s anime, even though we're supposed to get the impression from them that they're some kind of crack military force or something. And why do they talk about "kids" or "growing up" every paragraph? Media Vision needs to get some better writers...

The combat, however, is white hot. Anything would have been a nice, needed kick in the ass after WA3's "Dragon Quest with guns," but MV went above and beyond here. Exploration is decent too. At first I was kinda aback by the setting of the game, with all of the modern stuff, but I read on another site that this is supposed to be representative of all of those "1000 years ago" civilizations that are oft mentioned in the older games, so I welcome it with open arms now

I really don't know where you get Dragon Quest with Guns for Wild arms 3. Aside from the basic turn based system, WA3's like a billion times more flexible and interesting in battle than any DQ game and I'm a DQ fan.

Anyway, I figured WA4 had the stupid sci-fi psychobabble. It's plagued the series ever since the first game but the first game had the benefit of being psychobabble that made sense but even then it's kind of a big ass mess. The only Wild Arms to ever get the sci-fi element right is the Wild arms TV series which had an incredibly fucking good second half.

I won a copy of Alter Code F from RPGLand, just received that shizzle today. Made me all nostalgic for Wild Arms things, but I haven't played 4 yet. This thread made me want to, but, money! Maybe after price drop...

Of course NO Circuit City stores had WA 4 in-store....online only. Why the hell are you advertising it in the store flyers then? Anyway, it's on circuitcity.com right now for 29.99 w/free shipping, but seeing copies everywhere is making me a wait a bit.

That thing just destroyed me in so many horrible ways.

My favorite character at the moment is Raquel; she reminds me of the Asgard Golem in Wild Arms 3 (coolest re-entrance for a boss ever btw). In the way she's dressed and her absolute dominance in a fight, I mean. Give her a counter and critical badge, and with the proper skills, she'll devastate anything susceptible to a sword. THEN she has Move&Attack... it's just not fair to the opposition :p

Play and beat Alter Code F first (damn that Agetec! *ahem*), you'll get bonuses from it if you convert it for WA4.

More money at the start, level boost, weapon boost, FP ability boost, extra chests/books scattered throughout the game and more I can't remember off the top of my head.

I went to my local EB, WA4 at 40 dollars and the WA1 remake a 50... :\

seems WA4 is better than the remake
