Will CG FMV's be fased out next gen?

i think yes- BUT not in the way you think it

they will boost the processing still like they do now through FMV's,
thats my speculation.

OG, I'm lovin' that avatar. Her name's Buffy right?

Back on topic: I really hope they do and just use in game graphics for cutscenes.

They got phased out quite a bit this gen already, and I think they will go further next gen too. But I doubt they will completely dissapear.

we will still have pre-rendered CG video intros, cutscenes and endings in this coming next-gen. maybe next-gen will be the last generation for CG. the new consoles, while powerful and a large step up from the DC-PS2-GCN-XB, will not be powerful enough to rival highend CG for videogames, or even middle-of-the-road videogame CG. thus, CG will still have its place. I think we will see less CG though. less CG and more realtime / in-engine intros, cutscenes, endings. If the next-next generation (Xbox3, PS4) arrive with realtime raytracing, we might see a doing away with CG prerenders, but that wont happen completely in the upcoming generation.

I don't know why FMV/CG gets so much hate. What the fuck difference does it make if you're watching a cutscene in-game or with an FMV? You're still not playing it either way, so the arguement that "I like to play my games, biatch!" doesn't really have any relevence. I mean, hey, if you don't like story/cinematic-driven games, that's certainly understandable, but some games are just better suited to one way or another. Where as I wouldn't have MGS3's in-game cutscenes any other way, at the same time, WarCraft 3's in-game cutscenes are horribly suited by it's engine, and seeing each of Blizzard's breathtaking CG's feels like a tremendous reward.

It's mostly about taking away from the illusion that you're playing a game. Switching to FMV from real-time really takes away from that.

I mean, imagine RE4 with all cutscenes done in FMV :S I liked how RE4's cutscenes were done, with higher poly models and QTE's :D

I want the return of FMVs with real comedians dammit, damn you EA, what have you done to Westwood, and to Command and Conquer? Damn you to hell! :(

What I don't like is that if your character is wearing a certain thing, or carrying a certain weapon, they won't be during an FMV. During a real time cutscene though, they'll have that stuff on. Imagine in MGS3 if everytime they went into a cutscene, instead of Snake having the camo you were using, he'd have the stock green camo he starts off with. It'd just look messed up.

RE4 doesn't do this. When you start the game over, Leon has his basic pistol instead of whatever gun you have.

They'll never "go away". You won't be able to do a CG like FFXII movies (see them on IGN) on Xbox2. You won't be able to do CG like Blizzard's on Xbox3. You won't be able to do CG like LOTR : The Movie or The Matrix on Xbox4 etc.

I hope it remains...

I dislike when CG becomes a games main method of story telling, but I really enjoy some CG sequences. I don't believe that next-gen machines will be able to match the best CG work from companies such as Blizzard and Square. The WoW intro may not mean much in the context of the game, for instance, but it is extremely beautiful and enjoyable to watch.

How do you know? I think you are being far too pessimistic.

Personally, I think CG is going to go the way of the dodo. Maybe not completely this next gen, but eventually it will.

Just look at RE4. Way cooler than stupid CG movies.

I'm hoping developers start taking into account what needs to be in a game, versus what they want to put in the game next generation since there's all this hoopla about rising software development costs.

Although in that case, I can easily see a developer opting to allocate less resources making a game that's fun to play, and just filling the god damn thing with FMV to appease the graphic whores. :P

I hope they don't get completely fased out. Look at World of Warcraft's opening cinema. You think any system in the next 10 years could replicate that in-game? No phucking way!

The lake boss in RE4 just wouldn't have been the same with CG. It's was seamless using real-time cutscenes.

Nobody is suggesting that we use CG for those type of scenarios, though.
