Will gaming ever transcend hardware?

Man, it sucks having to buy and manage three different devices in order to have access to all the major games. Gotta have a PS5 for Sony exclusives (which honestly are the best in my opinion), Xbox for Forza and Gears, and Nintendo for their exclusives. Each one different controllers, layout, UI, each one taking a port on my TV, occupying space, consuming electricity, requiring manufacturing and distribution, and eventually getting into a landfill to rot for 200 years. Freaking hell. Why can't we just buy a BEASTLY single device that has a PS App, an Xbox App, and a Nintendo App, and call it a day? We do that with movies and music, yet gaming is still like this. And no, don't bring that PC thing, I mean a single CONSOLE experience.

I think the major barrier is local play, because I sure as hell don't want streaming for AAA gaming. But damn do I freaking hate having to deal with all these boxes, controllers, and peripherals separately.

I wonder what the future holds in this regard.

Have I got an idea for you....

To give you a more serious answer. That PC thing you don't want to hear about is probably the only way you will get games from all three console makers in one place. That still comes with some big IFs...

That doesn't transcend hardware because your app streams it off of someone else's hardware.

In this case you should hope that Valve keeps making the moves they have been making to entice console owners like yourself with their hybrid machines and portables.

yes. eventually there will come a point where new hardware will basically have close to zero benefits anymore as game development will be entirely limited by budget.
so the hardware power and hardware features will be gone from the equation entirely.

and besides that we already see Sony and Microsoft entering the PC space, one slower than the other, but Sony is evidently speeding up in that regard recently.

so my prediction is that the PS6 will be the last traditional home console ever. maybe the PS6 already has some PC connectivity or PC features to some degree.
but eventually both Microsoft and Sony will transition fully into running PC launchers/stores, probably with backwards compatibility built in to run your existing console libraries on PC. because as hardware gets faster this becomes also easier... especially since PS5 and Series X games wouldn't even need to be emulated, they simply need a Proton-esque translation layer as they already run on PC hardware.

eventually even phones and tablets will be supported by all of them, as those will eventually catch up in terms of hardware power as well.

the only question here is how long it will take for this to happen, my guess is after the PS6, maybe it'll take longer, who knows...

Interesting. I'm currently playing PSP games on my computer via emulation.

The ability to play these games on a big screen with a controller- handheld gaming was a mistake.
