Will Netflix ever offer 4K UHD Blu Rays?

I would be hyped.
My gut tells me it’ll never happen since they’ve been shifting focus to only streaming forever now.

I doubt it.

I'm probably the only person I know who still rents Blu-ray discs from Netflix so I can't imagine they are making much profit from us holdouts.

Nah. They're not interested in buying a whole set of new discs I'm sure. It wouldn't be a popular option

Plus 4k discs are relatively fragile compared to 1080p blu ray. Any slight scratch and you're probably going to see some skipping. Not the ideal format for shipping around from house to house through the mail

Probably not for rental, but they could run a store and/or studio publishing label and call it "The Netflix Archive", where they sell 4K UHD Blu-rays of their exclusive content after a period of time. I'd happily pay a premium; and while it's a niche, I think it's a sustainable one if done right, where there are still people like myself who value maximum quality, ownership, censorship resistance and mass-archival/preservation/availability.

The Irishman for eg. is only available on a Criterion Blu-ray which is 1080p, 8-Bit, SDR, AVC (H.264). And a lot of other good stuff is only digital.

I'm all for convenience being an option and the mass-market norm, but the idea of physical not being an option at all (and the subsequently quality / other benefits) really rubs me the wrong way.

I doubt it would eat into their subs, the sort of people who would go for these would be a smaller part of the audience who are willing to pay a premium; and even then, I'm sure most of them would still have or maintain a Netflix sub.

They should. They make a lot of movies & tv shows where cgi or cool looking sceneries are butchered by the low bitrate. Or at least they should offer the option to download something to your hard drive like Sony is doing with PS Now.

Aren't they literally the same discs? Maybe an extra data layer, but that is below the physical plastic disc part anyway.

Didn't mean to imply that they're any different material-wise. Just that they contain more data, being read at a faster speed, and therefore are less tolerant of scratches before it can affect playback.

I would really like a good 4K UHD rental service. Buying the discs to own is just too expensive to amass a collection I didn't necessarily want in the first place. But I do want to get the best out of my 4K TV, and compressed, streamed lower bitrate video and audio ain't it.

Netflix still does discs in the US? I thought they had stopped a long time ago.

EDIT: Oh you meant for sale of their own content, thought you were talking about blu-ray rentals.
