Will next generation see a return of the VMU?

With both Nintendo and Sony bearing handhelds that have some phenomenal featuresm and Microsoft with the expansive set of technology that aids mobilization, will Sega's innovative idea of a VMU system (Combatting Nintendo's advantage of having a Game boy) find a way to resurface in the next generation? There are 3 companies certainly capable of creating such a system.

Sony and the PSP - With a Dpad-button setup similar to the Playstation 2 and pretty decent storage, both built-in and expandible, I'm most excited about the VMU potential the PSP holds. You could be able to save games onto the PSP's memory stick and play the game back as if it was built for retail. There's also obvious reasons why I'd choose the PSP over what else there is: Media options, native support, third party support of PSP, and more. I feel that if Sony opted for a VMU-like setup for the PSP, it would help both the PSP and the adjoining console. The third-parties would support the idea as well, as it gives them leeway into both markets.

Microsoft and the VMU - Microsoft has been developing portable technologies for ages. They have the new WinCE that has Portable Media Center, They have Wireless Gateway, Smart Personal Object Technology (Data over FM, can you imagine getting updates and games over FM? Basically getting some awesome infomation anywhere with or without hotspots via DirectBand and even digital radio), integrated interaction with other Windows-controlled devices and a strong infrastructure and backing. The only thing that is putting a question mark into my mind is that it'll be out-of-the-way for Microsoft, but it could serve to give people teetering on a Revolution or PS3 over Xbox Next a reason to want the Xbox Next a bit more. It will also utilize a lot of Microsoft's other services and will be a self-owned 'dream product' for them, especially if they give it appeal outside games and gaming.

Nintendo - I'm not so much excited about the possibilities here because they like single-use products. I doubt it'll be much different from GBA and connectivity, which is kind of against the whole VMU-thing. VMU is about giving users THAT MUCH more from a game they purchased, whether it's at the console or away. The DS nor GBA have expandibility, and I'm not so sure what writeability the DS or GBA have, but a blank-cart may work also. With a blank-cart solution, you could even play back the cart on the GC cart slot.

The VMU, like the DC itself, was ahead of it's time. I miss it. :(

I would be up for it if the VMU would be rechargeable and I wouldn't have to be buying new batteries all the time.

Well what he's saying is that the PSP or the DS could replace the VMU idea that Sega had, by allowing us to download mini games from our console games onto our handhelds.

Sega's innovative idea of a VMU system

Sega blatantly stole the idea from Sony, and didn't improve on the memory capacity. The only thing Sega innovated was god awful business strategies.

The LCD memory card / Tiger electric style crappy gaming device is a god awful concept.

In addition to controllers with ports or bays for peripherals. Stupidest idea ever.

May these ill conceived concepts rest with the sorry ass companies that pimped them. I expect a formal apology from Sony for the PocketStation in the morning! >:|

Less bulky controllers = good for long gaming sessions. ^_^

Dreamcast VMU was announced/shown in '97, released November 1998 in Japan. The Pocketstation was unveiled early 1998 and released December 1998.

Just checked. VMU came out may, but it was still shown WWAAYY before launch.

LOL! :lol I want Sony to make another Pocketstation. Oh, and actually release it in the US ya bastards. ;) Otherwise, there's really no purpose. The VMU concept will just lead to more expensive memory cards and it would still be worthless for gaming. :| PEACE.

Wow, so not only did Sega not up the ante on the storage capacity of the device, they crashed the Saturn long before I remember them officially axing it.

Way to go Sega! You're in a Special Ed. Class of your own.

To be honest I found the VMU quite irritating. I can't be fucked changing the battery so I have to hear that awful shrill beep every time I boot the thing up.

Don't remove the little tab and you'll never have to hear it again. Well, in retrospect that is.

i expect alll new machines to use flash storage. 1gb for saves and mp3. x2 will most definately have this and it will also help prevent piracy. no harddrive and the mem card will be too small to hold a game. pirates PWN3D.

And my name is Shantae?!

The trolling was FUBAR to start. I should have just opted to go with, "I'm rubber, you're glue. . ." but noooooooo.

Anyhow. . . time to return to the place where I thought it was safe.

No, wait - I never thought the mall was safe. It's just going to be slightly less tolerable today. >_<

You shoulda just contributed to the art thread instead.

"As a student I'd had plenty of ambition of the kind he meant. But, when I had to drop my studies, I very soon realized all that was pretty futile."

Meh. . . I have nothing to contribute.

I've taken the advice of all those bastards that berated what I did in school and just accepted that cartooning "is not art."

I look forward to enduring a rubbish career flipping burgers, or dealing with peoples shit until I'm claimed by cardiac arrest, a car crash, or something else that will no doub brighten the days of the peole I've cheesed off. =_=

COMICS AREN'T ART KIDS! Take it from me. Study auto mechanics or law.

Time to call a man about cutting off my hands.

Fuuuuuuuck. . .

Dude.... Are you losing it? It's quite disturbing to witness... Draw something and share with us. You'll feel better afterwards.

I hate that the VMU didn't take off - it was a great (but definately flawed) idea. The battery in mine seemed to have the lifespan of a moth. They should've been designed such that they were recharged when docked in the controller.

Dude.... Are you losing it?

Lost.

It's only going to get worse.

There are no decent jobs here.

I have no fucking health care.

I can't afford to fucking heat my home.

The Internet and phone services are the next to go. Can't afford those either.

The jobless rate in the State I'm in continues to climb, and the city I'm trapped in recently won the illustrious award as The Poorest City in America.

And my fellow citizens signed up for another four years of this shit?!

Needless to say, I'm looking forward to us getting everything we deserve. >:|

So yeah, in addition to being completely crushed by the world around me. It's just too fucking cold to hunker down over a drawing board and do anything remotely related to not freezing my balls off. Besides, it doesn't pay the bills. Convincing people to buy overpriced shit they don't need does. =_=

I'm just sort of glad I don't have it as bad as some people.

Dude, the elections were weeks ago. You just gotta move on. Besides, at least you don't live in Detroit or something. Err..... do you?

Arrgghhh! It's like my ears are picking up his typing O_O

VMUs would have been great if their battery lasted for more than 5 minutes (cue cunning PSP reference). They had potential, but the batterly life firmly kicked such potential in the nuts.

The VMU was a generally decent idea, though obviously godawful in its implementation. Would it be useful to have a small screen on the control pad? Perhaps. If it doesn't run out of batteries in literally a week, use batteries no one has on hand that are fairly expensive, rendering it useless for 99.9% of the people that own it, thereby ensuring game developers, certainly already wary about dedicating resources to this goofy thing, 100% guaranteed won't give a shit about it and you'll be lucky to get a nice title screen to look at, and it actually has some functionality! Even the games I was excited abuot having the VMU for, like football, had fucking completely retarded implementation and were seriously limited by the pocket-watch capabilities of the unit. I think the best use of the VMU for all the things Sega tried and failed at, was RE:CV's health bar. That's it. And even that wasn't very good. If you had told Sega their brilliant innovation's apex would be being able to see your health in RE w/o pausing, even they wouldn't have been stupid enough to embark on the project.

/5 years ago rant today.

Whoever tries a similar thing again will have to do a bang-up fucking job, seeing all the damage in gamers' psyches Sega did with the VMU.

Welcome to Sweden!

Dude, the elections were weeks ago. You just gotta move on.

It's not so much about moving on, as it is toughing it out through another potentially miserable four years. I've accepted that Bush won. I've also accepted that with him as our leader, lower class folks like myself have no fucking chance. Viva la Rich White Men!

It totally wouldn't be an issue if I could, say, afford to move some place where there were more job opportunities. It's going to be a few years before I can dig myself out of the hole I'm in and hopefully migrate to some place where my balls won't freeze off while I'm poor.

Sadly, those are mostly the Jesusland states. :/

Another year, another chance to roll the dice with FAFSA. See what kind of bullshit excuse I get for being turned down this year. ^_^

Welcome to Sweden!

I thought Sweden was nothing but bikini teams, hot chocolate, and skiing. :P

And good health care and social security (which also means high taxes, but still!). And no wars to fight! And hockey, dammit, hockey!

That sounds really nice, but I want to move closer to the Equator. Fuck all this cold weather and European blood shit.

I want steel drums and sunshine! *cue Orin*

I agree actually. It IS too cold. :(
I hope Orin has some room for me too. :|

Babes = Good, but unless I plan on wearing a suit of living vaginas for all my days (Which in theory isn't such a bad idea, except for a few days out of the month) I do not <3 cold weather.
