Will Sony relinquish the Ghost Rider license? Did Nic Cage decline a paying job?

Last year's "Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance" pulled in a meagre $132 million worldwide. Shot on a fairly modest $57 million, it made a profit but wasn't enough that Sony Pictures isn't keen on pursuing another.

Nicolas Cage says that if another "Ghost Rider" film does go forward, it won't be with him.

I think the ship has sailed on that one. At least with me involved. I've done what I had to do with that part. You never say never, but right now, today, I would say that I'm done."

In fact, Cage says he'd find it interesting if they moved forward with a female Ghost Rider. The comments come as Sony has been slapped with a lawsuit by a stuntman for a DVD promo gone wrong.

He left himself an out and its probably just positioning for later negotiations but it seems Nic Cage CAN turn down work. Not only turn it down but do so before theres even an offer to turn down. He's quite the discerning craftsman.

Hopefully Sony is done with the franchise and it can go back to Marvel. But I doubt it. It didn't bomb and they'll most likely retool it and try again.

this is sad. even if neveldine/taylor probably weren't coming back for another, please don't let it fall onto the homogenized marvel production line. spirit of vengeance was the best comic book film in years.

This franchise is ruined for the forseeable future so I'm not surprised. Even if they gave it back to Marvel it wouldn't make sense to use him as anything other than a cameo or a misunderstood villain in someone else's movie.

I think this is a character that has missed his chance to make a meaningful impact with any audience outside of comic books. A TV series could happen at some point maybe but I don't see any reason why people would flock to any Ghost Rider film no matter who holds the rights.

Listen, I know what the man said. I'm calling him a liar. He would never DREAM of turning down a roll. He's our generation's Christopher Walken.

The man is a master thespian. I watch the "Nic Cage loses his shit" video on Youtube all the time. Not just any Johnny-come-lately has those sorts of acting chops, you know!

I heard the second one was meant to be a bit enjoyable, unlike the first.
The first one was a shitty toothless movie while the second is a shitty movie with bite. It's more enjoyable than the first just because of how crazy it is thanks to the Crank directors but it's still pretty bad even when you view it as a B movie.

I said it somewhere else but I think it would be really cool for Marvel to take characters like Ghost Rider, Blade, Daredevil, punisher and any other darker characters and have them be part of a team up movie about anti heroes. Think about an R rated Avengers movie where all the characters fight dirty and beat people up into a pulp. I think it would be awesome.

Either that or spin them into the SHIELD show somehow.

If they ever tried to weave those characters into the Avengers storyline, it would be a mistake. They should use these characters to appeal to a more adult audience. Make them small scale, not too huge a budget. They should take influence from what Dredd did, don't make the story too big, but keep it focused on introducing the character well.

The second Ghost Rider movie was awesome in places, I recently bought a blu-ray of that as well.

They nailed the character design and some of the crazy action scenes were properly well done. Those music video antics here and there really sparked on a big screen (less so on a smaller one).

Having said that, the movie still had horrible problems. The narrative was bull, the baddies were retarded and the overall feel was cheap - back alley Eastern Europe towns and monasteries. And the unforgivable fact that they didn't go half as hog mad as they had with the first movie's cheesefest.

Would pay to see a reboot with real actors or something.

I was so excited then they announced Neveldine/Tayor were doing Ghost Rider 2. Crank and Crank 2 were awesome, and a crazy batshit wild over the top Ghost Rider movie would have been awesome.

Spirit of Vengeance was none of those things. I blame the PG-13 rating.

On one of the HDTGM podcasts with the Crank/Ghost Rider2 director, they joked about how Chris Chelios should become the new ghost rider after what happened at the end of Crank 2.

Which would be AWESOME

I watched the latest Ghost Rider movie recently and thought it was pretty rubbish. I think Ghost Rider might have the same problem Hulk has when it comes to making a movie. When he is transformed into the rider, he is just a CGI character with no voice. All the other successful comic movies have had characters where their personality still comes through, regardless of whether they are in their costume or as a civilian.

If they made an anti hero team up movie, they could treat Ghost Rider as the same way as they treat the Hulk in the Avengers, and have him as the big gun guy. Making huge collateral damage and stuff.

Ghost Rider 2 is one of the worst movies I've seen in the past decade. It wasn't even fun to watch. It was just awful every step of the way. Even if I were Nic Cage, I could see myself turning down a paycheck if it meant doing another one of these abominations.

Ghost Rider 2 made Taken 2 look like a competent film.

Agreed. Ghost Rider is more analogous to a monster flick than a superhero movie. That's why I think he'd make a great sympathetic villain in something like a Dr Strange movie or something. I think a TV show could work well also.

I don't see why Marvel can't do more isolated movies separate from the Avengers initiative in the MCU. Have a Dredd-style $30 million production that just focuses on one case or adventure for these more violent guys like Daredevil and Punisher. Set them in the MCU with allusions to the larger stuff, but leave it all out of there. I think setting it in the MCU would give them a box office boost as well, something the Punisher has been lacking. Maybe once they get their origins set up, they could weave them into the larger movies with small parts or cameos.

I remember a rumor of Punisher showing up in a Captain America, which could work. Marvel really needs to be looking at doing stuff separate from SHIELD and Avengers. Hopefully Guardians of the Galaxy signifies that.

Yeah I think they should keep some of the characters separate but within the same universe. They could maybe have the story affected by events in the other movies. But I wouldn't have it so shield know about every single hero out there.
