will GTA4 or GTA Next be a launch title for PS3 in the U.S. ? I think it's a given. I hope for an incredibly massive gameworld, with your decisions affecting everything. what else would rock star be doing? other than the PC/Xbox versions of SA. maybe one more PS2 outing? I hope not. I hope they've got all their attention on making an incredible PS3 launch GTA! bring it on baby :D

no....it wasnt. it was part 2 in a 3 part series. thats why they didnt use numbers. like gta london or some crap.

On the one hand it doesn't seem that likely. Getting used to next-gen development + the time needed to create a world on par with peoples expectations (I said SA would create a expectation for the next GTA to be even bigger) would say no. However there's no doubt that GTA is Rockstar's financial cornerstone and 3 years before the next big GTA release (ports and possible PSP version withstanding) might be too much for them and that may push them to have a new GTA for 2006.

Doubtful. Sony never has any good launch titles :lol
What you say?!

Now launch lineups, there's a different story...

Maybe if Sony provides excellent development tools we'll see a GTA at PS3 launch, otherwise considering the complex architecture of the PS3 there's no way they could complete a GTA game by launch.

Why do people get so anal about attaching numbers to GTA? GTA2 should have been titled GTA3 if you wanted to put a number on each GTA game

Sony and Microsoft will fight over the rights of GTA Next. There's no bigger game to establish the instant commercial success of a new console.

GTA will hit xbox next first. no one even knows when ps3 is going to hit nor have dev kits or solid specs or anything. devs that want to make money will work on x2.

Sony will write as big a check as they need to, but Rockstar may not be willing to sell "forever exlusive" rights for any price. I wouldn't be surprised to see it on PS3 first, then X2 9-12 months later.

edit: I'd bet a testicle that we're going to see PS3 sometime between September and December of 2006.

Didn't Sam Houser say that the next GTA is going to be on PS3? I highly doubt that the next GTA will hit Xbox2 first. It's not like R* is strapped for cash or anything.

This is what john tv posted in the EGM thread:

PS3 isn't that far off. The specs are final and the hardware will be unveiled pretty soon.

Didn't Sam Houser say that the next GTA is going to be on PS3?

That was Dan I believe. It was in an interview in the OPM where he seem to indicate that its going to the PS3.

hey, just a random though that should get some discussion going.

but, do you guys think, that in two years times, do you guys think that the team can do something as big as San Andreas?

i personally don't think they'll be able to if the game is supposed to have a gigantic graphical jump. i'd actually would rather see the series go with smaller enviroments if it means having super ultra turbo graphics.

but yeah, i can't see them busting out a game bigger than San Andreas if they're expecting to have some super jump in graphics. obviously, the game will look noticeably nicer, but it took what? 150 people 2 years to make San Andreas?

I don't really, I actually would kinda prefer it if the next GTA is more like Vice City's size. Pulling an SA type game world that early next gen seems crazy. I'd also rather them focus on one super detailed city to play around in for now, there will be plenty of time for them to go into the whole SA type thing later on as they get more comfortable with the engine. I'm just dying to see a next gen Liberty City.

Rockstar won't release a GTA game at launch, no matter which console. It's smarter for them to wait a year into the console's launch so that there's a larger installed base.

You would not have called GTA2 GTA3 due to London because London was an Add-On Pack. I remember you needing to insert GTA1 into the PSOne if you wanted to play London.

I would consider GTA Vice City to be GTA4 and San Andreas to be GTA5. You seriously cannot consider them 'Side Stories' since they're so bloody huge, and add to GTAIII in so many ways.

Heh, give EA a week.

While I agree with you, I think R* would get lambasted at this point if their series got smaller in scope rather than larger. Maybe if they go to a mostly multiplayer game (they did say GTA4 would have online, but not to what extent) a smaller world could be acceptable.

They'll have to have someone create a graphics engine for them to use before you see it. Given that the PS3 even with nVidia won't be a familiar platform for developers. A launch title is out of the question. They could have an Xbox 2 version ready for the PS3 launch. Wouldn't that be delicious.

Definitely not, I would say. With SA's no-show at E3 being one recent example, it is clear that R* avoids grouping the franchise with other junk at the same time. I think this will be a second gen title.

If it is not the whole world in the game this time, and perhaps some stuff in outer space as well, I'm not buying it. ;-)

If it does, there's only one thing that can be said about the next gen console race; game. Set. Match.

And that's really sad.

There isn't really a point, unless Sony can magically get 10 million consoles out there at launch. PS3 is going to be sold out for a long time, so there's no reason to blow their load right off the bat.

Aren't guys getting bored of GTA yet? Damn, I thought this trend would quickly fade after Vice City but it's still kicking.

If Zelda and Final Fantasy can come out every year and a half with few complaints...

Aren't you getting bored of Zelda or Metroidvania? I mean it's the same formula every time. San Andreas is a great sequel in a series nobody expected to evolve so far.

But if they released it at launch they could get the "Mario 64 effect" where every who buys a PS3 would also pick up GTA4

It feels like they get that effect no matter the time of the release anyways. Besides, Rockstar won't have to worry about the supply of PS3 units at when GTA4éNext comes out

I don't think Rockstar even has the tools to build a next generation game yet. Furthermore the development time would pass the system launch. I don't think any developer could do a full-size grand theft auto universe with all the technical upgrades in less than 2.5 years.

I'm pretty sure Rockstar never ment for them to be direct sequels/prequels. All the additional games have themes, while the main series remain current.

There is a new version of Renderware for the next gen consoles announced, so I think they'll be the first customer as soon as it's ready.

Yeah, I'm also hoping GTA4 goes back to the "one city" desgin of GTA3 and VC. GTA4 needs to make major improvements to the play mechanics, AI, physics, # cars/peds on screen, environment interactivity, and online play. It also needs to be more detailed to really take advantage of next gen graphics. I don't think R* could do all of that and still come up with a state-sized map like San Andreas (which had a lot of filler as it is). Wouldn't mind seeing a 2007 take on Liberty City, with an updated look at old areas, a few new "islands," and some of the surrounding countryside.

Also, bring back the rampages and hidden packages! I really miss these in SA.

I don't think they will too much. When people see how amazing PS3 GTA will look I think they will be more than willing to lower their expectations just a little. The gameplay is so fresh, solid, and constantly evolving I'd feel sorry for anyone who decides to miss out on the fun because of it's size.

Sure chronologically, but as far as signifigance, they are sidegames. In one of the very first PR statements from Rockstar and Take Two last year they specifically said the next (then unnamed SA) GTA title would be another sidegame like Vice City and it would be the last GTA title for PS2 and to use the GTA3 engine. SA and Vice are of course full and very relevant games to the series, but going by the pattern it seems like all the main GTA titles that get the number and new engine are set in Liberty. I've always viewed Liberty as what Hyrule is to the Zelda series, "da spot".:D

Guess we can all argue about this until the cows come home though huh? We'll never really know for 100% sure until Rockstar decides to give another GTA a number or officially decides to discard the numbering theme all together.

Also, bring back the rampages and hidden packages! I really miss these in SA.

What I really want to see is for them to finally turn those rampages into real missions! They need to revive that rumored Darkel character back in the game. The rampages would make so much more sense with him in the game.

They could probably get away with a smaller play area but I definitely think they'd need at least 2 cities and a fair bit of countryside. Even if those cities were smaller.

I'm quite happy with what they accomplished with San Andreas, just make it smarter and prettier. They have the basic skeleton for it now

I'd like to see more permanence to the world. For example, cars not just glitching away, but after a while getting towed away. Same thing if you caused a freeway pileup (which was really fun to do in SA), it'd take a while for it to get cleared up.

Exactly. None of those games make go oh shit I must buy it now! :lol Thus I'm waiting 2 years to get a PSP and a PS3.
