Will Wright... no words... should of sent a poet...

Will Wright just ended his session at GDC about the future of content or in his own words "one future of content." The centerpiece of his talk was the unveiling of something he's been working on for quite some time, a game titled Spore (likely to change).

The scope and imagination invested in this is beyond all comprehension. It wouldn't suffice to describe it to you, needless to say it encompasses all time and history of life into a single piece of software. Unfortunately, it looks like the official unveiling won't be until E3, but rest assured it will be worth the wait. The potential of this game is beyond all words.

Um, try to put it into words :P :lol You can't just say what you've said and then not elaborate! :) What's the premise? Did he demo it? Video? What's it all about? Tell us what he told the audience :)

Damnit, you're the second person to cocktease about how fucking amazing this new game is without elaborating :-P TELL ME!

Considering it's from Will Wright, you know it'll be something off beat and crazy that only gets greenlighted because of his past, more then proven track record. When it's announced, some people will say "WTF?" Others will say it's brilliant and different. Then it, and it's nearly assured expansion packs, will go on to sell millions of copies.

Doesn't this guy have a license from the Government to just print his own money by now?

WELL YOU'LL GET WORDS.

AND LIKE IT.

...oh... and optimally you will tell us these words.

Please.

Interesting. Give us more details though!

Nothings worst then a grammer Nazi. Dude's like you should keep quite.

:lol :lol

If you are trying to smack someone down don't give them an opening at a rebuttal!! :lol

Best presentation ever. Seriously, the guy is one of the most engaging speakers I've ever seen.

The game doesn't look like it would hold my interest for more than an hour or two though. Then again, that's how I feel about the Sims.

He's absolutely right about the direction that games need to head in. There's still a place for extremely well-produced linear games, but they're getting progressively more expensive and less interesting.

Well, what IS IT ABOUT!?

Did you sign NDAs before entering the conference?

God that was awesome. I can't believe it. I just...I really can't believe it. Wow.

No I wasn't there. But my post is just as useful.

will you be able to make the spores have sex

YES YOU WILL

Well, sort of. You have to evolve 'em beyond the cellular stage before they get sexy. But there's even a little romantic guitar and saxamophone interlude while they rut. That section of the game is a bit like Cubivore, actually, but without any appearance of the terms "meat bit" or "love tunnel."

I saw Will Wright speak about the future of videogames years ago at a SFMOMA show, "Artcade." His slide show presentation compared games with art movements and he pined for games to go abstract. It was a great speech, better than Nolan Bushwell's.

Well that sounds interesting. I'm not entirely sure what it is yet, but it has my interest.

You've got to love the timing of the GDC. No waiting an entire year for info like we often have to after things first shown at e3.

When you use the mating call, you find another creature with which to do procedural mating. :lol

I mean, wow. What a great presentation. It's right up there with the talk by Keita Takahashi yesterday about Katamari Damacy. But seeing this highly-polished demo of Spore this morning makes me want to go buy a new high-end PC.

I'll have to post my notes from the presentation tonight.

Does it look like those high power microscope shots we see?

Edit:I guess thats just the first part of the game.

Man now I kinda wish I spent the dough to go to GDC this year.

I'll never forget the first talk he gave a few years back. Most GDC panels aside from the "Paul is Dead" one, especially back then, were kind of sterile and dry and many of them were pretty light on hard content to be honest. And I'm sure many of them still are this year.

Yet his talk drew from all these disparate sources, like architecture, prank calls, and Miyamoto and his gardening, all delivered rapid fire so that by the time you just got what the point of his last spiel was he was already on to the next idea. It was a little confusing, but in a good complicated way, and very inspirational and entertaining. Sounds like this presentation made people kind of feel the same way.

That sounds like a very cool concept. It's so very broad though. I hope it's scope wont prevent the seperate elements from getting the polish that they deserve.

Sounds cool.

lol, when i first heard about this 2 years ago, I was like wtf how can this possibly work?!

and now it's finally revealed and i'm still thinking wtf?! that's gonna be really hard to pull together with so many diff. types of games in one.

It could easily have been longer. There's so much to this game... I'm not 100% sold on it, but I really admire the ambition behind it, as well as Wright's ability to synthesize gameplay concepts with practical technological and economical factors.

after reading that article.... HOLY SHIT! this has a chance to be one of the greatest games EVER!

wow.

edit// also it's one of the coolest sounding uses for internet conectivity i have seen.

Or sink under its own weight, like many way-too-ambitious games before it.

I love grammar nazis. People should know this shit, but I can't be bothered to say anything. They are social resources, for the greater good.

So its an example of how to make a game cheaply, but its been in development for two years already? :lol
