I was really surprised to see that Prime 4 will include mouse controls. This sets a precedent that first/third person shooters and games will likely offer these controls as an option. This is similar to how Nintendo popularized gyro controls, and now most first/third person games on the Switch (and even some PS5) have optional gyro aiming.

I remain skeptical. My biggest concerns are how comfortable the joycon actually is when used as a mouse, and also if I'll need to be on a perfectly flat surface, or if I can just use my leg as a mousepad or something. I generally play console games on a couch instead of a desk, so it's really going to depend on how well it works for me.

But another interesting tidbit is that Nintendo seems to be combining the mouse tracking and the gyro movement/tilting to make controlling seamless and potentially more versatile. It'll be really interesting to actually give it a try.

Do you think you'll be using mouse controls?

I think it would be good for Civ.

I am terribly underwhelmed by the Switch 2 reveal. Civ is one of the better 3rd party titles available at launch and it would probably work well with Civ.

I'll probably try it on Metroid butAs soon as hori comes out with a split pad pro I'll be ditching the joycons completely like I did with switch 1.

there are some games where you just could REALLY fucking benefit from a mouse

what immediately comes to mind is games that you let decorate your house or build

totally fine playing Valheim on a controller, but when it comes to decorating your house I appreciate my mouse

I've actually made a habit out of playing games that require any sort of building on my PC when possible for this very reason

I was planning on getting an Xbox for playing online games with mouse and keyboard, I hope that with Switch 2 I won't need it anymore so yes, that will basically be the main use of give it, I'll probably just buy another dock to put it in my desktop tho

Any game with lots of interface, inventory management for need for precise aim I'll definitely use it on. I'd also like to see stealth/action games on it, because you can combine analog movement with mouse aiming.

Nope. Most likely not. It really depends on the feature though.

If it is something like a collection of mini games to mess around with like Mario 64 DS had, then sure. But I highly doubt I play games like Metroid Prime with mouse control.

I'm a PC gamer and M&K is my preferred input method for lots of types of games.

That said, I'm not sure how much I'll use it on Switch 2. I only have ultrawide monitors so I'd have to play pillarboxed or play it in tabletop mode.

Also not sure how the Joy-Con will feel as a mouse yet. I'm sure third party manufacturers will start selling mouse-like enclosures for it.

That's what I'm looking forward to.

I never use my Switch on my TV, if I do get a Switch 2, I'll use it the same way - portable only and mouse controls aren't likely to be all that practical on the train.

No, unless you play at a desk or have a sturdy table in front of you, it doesn't make sense; playing from the couch like that is uncomfortable.

I will usually set my Switch on a table and play wherever it's convenient, so I was thinking these mouse controls could legit come in handy for me on occasion.

I'm definitely testing the mouse controls out a bunch. No matter it's a great addition overall as it's basically included for no additional cost. And there will be some fun innovative uses for it from Nintendo as well as some pc gaming genres being made much more attractive for Switch2.

On the downside, mostly early fears. LIke close but not quite ie it would probably only make me miss the keyboard in a game like Civ.

Or fearing that mouse becomes the defacto way to play in Splatoon because it's so much faster and more precise than other control methods. I kind of was set on gryo aiming being the future of console shooters or wishing it was the future if only others did it as well as Splatoon. (This coming from a long time pcgamer.)

Fear it ruins some of the uniqueness of Nintendo. Metroid Prime wasn't originally a shooter back in the day. You locked on to everything. You didn't aim much. Granted many complained back in the day that you couldn't control it like a shooter. Same with Splatoon mentioned above too. Gryo aiming made it unique. A bit mouse-like but also I thought it was good for gameplay the aiming wasn't so automatic as a mouse can be.
