Will you ever buy an Electric Vehicle?

I feel like it's almost inevitable for me within the next decade. Gas prices are going up and the electric vehicles are approaching somewhat affordable prices and getting less ugly to me eyes.

What about you guys, has anyone here been eyeing a E-car purchase in the future? or maybe some of you already own one and can share a few ownership experiences.

Sure, eventually. They seem like a great vehicular paradigm once there is a proper infrastructure for them. (New power plants, grid upgrades and waaaaay more charging stations).

Currently they feel like a toy for those who live in a large metro area... that never leave it. I have done a couple multi day road trips recently and actually thought about how much harder and longer the drives would have been in an EV.

But it’s getting there. And I appreciate all the beta testers who are using them now so it’s better experience when I do get one.

Bought a new car last fall. May (or may not) be my last gas vehicle, but we are getting closer.

I'd like to get an electric Vespa for my first electric vehicle. I need them to get cheaper, faster, and go further, first. I like the idea of silent riding, and recharging while I'm at work. I have a 2003 Piaggio LT150 right now, and its still hanging on. I've been driving it on dirt roads over hills and mountains for 17 years, and it looks a little rough but still goes. 60mph too.

Yes, probably a Tesla, but I don’t understand certain aspects of ownership such as maintenance, what I do if I have a breakdown, etc. I live in Buffalo so it’s not like there are Tesla garages in the area. Do they have remote services?

I would also probably want to install a charger in my garage. How much does that cost?

Yeah I know exactly what you mean, also we have cold winters where I live I assume that effects the range severely.

would happily buy one. i just got a new (used) car a few weeks ago. really wanted an EV but it's just too expensive and there's no way for me to charge it up at home. maybe in 10 years EVs will be more common/affordable and i will have a new house that can charge it.

i guess the positive of my new car is that it is a bit more efficient. it doesn't spew out as much Co2. but yeah i'd love to go all electric.

Nope. The infrastructure for EV's is absolutely horrible in my country - you don't have anywhere to charge your car when you live in a flat and there are only several chargers in malls/public places in my city. It's equally bad for travelling between cities - there's only a handful of charging stations. Going on vacation is out of the question, because we usually travel around 700km one way and I don't want to waste time making long stops along the way. Not to mention quick charging is equally or more expensive as using petrol and much more expensive than driving on lpg (gas).

Would not buy one until battery tech matures.

Currently, I've only spent 20-30$ on charging, since Nov 2019, else it's been on someone else dime. Maintenance has been low.

Much harder and longer? Sir you are saying all this because you do not have an EV vehicle. You won't be saying any of that once you have a Tesla vehicle..trust me.

Phevs are the way to go. We just picked up a rav4 prime. We get 46 miles all electric and 40mpg on regular gas for 600 mile range. No anxiety about all electric or gas prices.
And 300hp, really quick compared to what we thought.
$38,900 but we get a $7500 tax rebate.

Roomy as hell, awd, fast, and I'm averaging 83mpg combined with the electric range, and a 150,000 warranty on the battery. Which is great because I never keep a car more than 4 years anyway.

I like the design of the Tesla (i was sitting in one) but i would never buy one.

But give me a Tesla with gasoline and i would buy one xD

Yes, I really like the Cadillac Lyriq, though they hinted at another more sedan like Cadillac EV too. Don’t want to buy an EV right now though would rather lease one, just with how battery tech is improving a car you buy now won’t be great in 5-10 years. Gonna lease until the tech matures

Get a phev now. You can just plug it in at home and use regular gas if you go over than 30-50 miles of electric range. Best of both. Electricity prices soar? Use gas. Gas prices soar? Use more electric.

Only if electric trucks can match the performance of gas trucks. Even then, I'd probably still go with a gas truck because it will be significantly cheaper.

I bought my 2019 Rav 4 Hyrbrid knowing it would be my last ICE car, I hope it last me 5-7 years as I expect the EV market to be perfect by then (hell we're already seeing tons of progress)

My next purchase - providing the infrastructure has been out properly in place by then (current car is only three years old, so happy for the time being).

I doubt I'll live long enough to see it become the only viable option, and in my lifetime, I doubt I will buy one. Just not cost-effective or practical for me. Even with gas prices going up, I've yet to see a single station to power up at where I live. And though the vehicles may look pretty, I'm guessing there's still a long way for the technology to go under the hood.

I'm aiming for my next car to be electric and it should happen by the end of this decade. My real issue is the winter rating of EV's where the tempreture can get down to the -40C to -50C with windchill (-20C to-30C during the day) and the lifespan of the batteries.

My ICE car can last 20 years while EV's would need costly battery changes.

I don't like the design of many of them except the trucks(not cybertruck) and the Porsche.

If Volvo makes a full electric "Recharge" version of their normal cars then that would be nice. The Polestars look slick but are high end price while being basic sedans still. Need some utility.

However, I will miss the sound of the engines. Once you drive a car with a nice sounding engine then get a bit attached to that. If you have only driven regular old 4 cylinder engines in econo cars then you won't miss the engine noise or lack thereof.

Perhaps. But I sure didnt see many charging stations on my drive from Tuscon, AZ to Orlando, FL. Hell their were bits on I10 where gas stations were scarce. And how long does a full charge take? My understanding its >40min. And we can say "well dont let it get that low"..... which means I have to stop more frequently. The trip was hard enough with a ~450 mile fuel range that only takes 5min to fill from empty. Having to plan extra stops, or meals around long charges is a burden I would rather avoid.

Dont get me wrong I have lots of friends with various EVs, so I get the upside to them. Most of my friends have charging stations at home, so their day to day driving is frictionless. Wake up and car is charged with plenty of juice for driving/from work and running errands. That is awesome! But that is not the same as traveling all day through less populated bits of the country and not starting or ending at a location with a guaranteed charging station.

My next vehicle will probably be electric.

I currently daily a truck with crap mileage, but nothing else wrong with it. Its great for terrible weather or when I do go offroad in it. I just passed 100K miles so I will probably keep it for years yet.

My fun car is a 2005 GTO. A big cammed V8 with a good exhaust is damn near organismic to hear, and I've yet to hear a better sounding car than mine. The car is stupid fun. That being said I'm going to sell it soon. I never drive it. It has 38K miles and is 16 years old. Currently they sell for far more than they should. I never drive it because you can't grab traction more than half the year in the north, it drinks fuel and that premium gas is now like $.65 a gallon more than regular now. Sure EV's will never sound as good, nor will they will they probably have the raw feeling the GTO has, but give it another 5 - 10 years and every electric will now be faster than it. When a stock EV Civic rolls up next to me and wins in a short race I'll die inside and then my GTO will lose that special feeling. I want to remember it as being faster than shit even if new cars are all faster.

I might just sell both and get a Cybertruck to piss people off.

Had a hybrid Ford Fusion rental for a few weeks and while it had good MPG numbers it was the one of the most boring cars I have ever driven, it was sluggish, heavy and handled like shit if your any sort of driving enthusiast your not switching to a EV of any sort, compared to gasoline powered cars they are very expensive.
I’m not saying you can’t find a good EV that performs as good if not better but they usually cost much more.

No not until the technology is far better in over 10 years.
Us in the west also have the problem of getting rid of cheap coal/gas/nuclear energy for expensive unsustainable wind and solar power!
If the climate death cult gets their way we won't have the capacity to charge up electric cars when everyone has one. Power cuts and super expensive energy bills.
Guess what country has the cheapest electricity bills in the world? It begins with C and they are building 15 coal power plants a month on average.

I'm cautiously optimistic for solid state batteries for the next generation of electric cars.

I'm still waiting for the most basic Electric cars, right now they are still being sold as luxury product with all kind of crap I don't need.
Give me the cheapest, dumbest, simplest electric car.

No constructor are doing this right now, they are all competing to make the best electric car.
I don't want the best, I want a slow box with wheels to go from A to B and move some stuff along the way.

i would get a model s or x without hesitation, but I really don’t like the look of the 3.

my dream scenario would be for Lexus to release an electric GS.

I own a Prius Prime - which has around 30-35 miles of electric range. On normal warm days, I can commute using only electric..
I had the car for 4 years now, and I don't think I have fueled the car more than 15 times so far.
It would run 5-600 miles with charge + full gas tank, so it's good to know that I won't be stranded even if the charge runs out or nor have to worry too much about the charge all the time.

Also I get a great discount crossing George Washington Bridge during commute being EV/Low Emission.
So as long as the discount is there and I have to drive to NYC every day... I don't see myself getting an ICE car.

Except.. it's a really really boring car. I would love to drive something little more fun - so I've been looking into buying a MX-5 for running around locally... but it's just been a dream. I probably won't get one till I retire in 20 years or so.
