Windows 10 Troubleshooting Thread

Windows 10 explorer.exe is completely broken for me. No matter what I do, it starts to become unresponsive, and eventually I can't log off, shut down, or restart my computer. Eventually I just have to hold the power button to restart my computer, so I can have it working for 2 more minutes before it breaks again. I'm seriously considering going back to windows 8, as 10 is completely broken for me. I can't even open task manager, as it crashes 90% of the time.

You can always try doing a clean install, if you don't mind backing up your files. Just go to Settings > Update & security > Recovery.

I see. That makes sense.

BUT HOLY FUCK I CAN FINALLY SHADOWPLAY DESKTOP CAPTURE. This shit was broken forever on Windows 8 and 8.1.

MS mentioned about the running older programs and Windows 10 will make an App for it. Not sure if that is a thing yet but that might sort the issue.

Have you tried resetting the install? I never trust these dirty upgrades when it comes to major updates, a fresh start always feels better. No old junk running in the background, etc. My old 2011 laptop feels very snappy now that I've got a clean W10 install on it.

As long as your personal files are on a different drive or partition (which is something you should always do IMO) that data will be safe through the reinstall.

Is anyone able to get multiple GPUs working on NVidia? I've tried so many things, but the drivers won't detect my second GPU no matter what.

So I have a 770 and a 460. Not sure if you're having the same problem, but this worked for me, installing 347.25-desktop-win8-win7-winvista-64bit-international-whql.exe . The Win 10 drivers for older cards doesn't support the new driver model and the system can only load one or the other. So I guess you need old drivers that don't support the new model on either GPU in order to get multiple GPU generations working.

So....What the fuck do I do?

LOOOL, this is too funny :D

Just download it manually with the media creator tool. Waiting for it to tell you it's ready is just a waste of time if you want to install now. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

The word is that if microsoft have identified issues with specific setups, then they will wait with allowing you to install until it is fixed.

Another theory is that they are just trying to limit the amount of people that install so that their servers will survive.

But just download the tool in OP and force the upgrade..

Thank you, but Ive also tried this

"SOMETHING HAPPENED" is my error

Does it say your trial has expired and to download full version from Windows Store?

Literally every single windows 10 app I try and load up including the settings app that lets me re-install windows are all coming up with this error. And loading the Windows Store doesn't work either.

Yeah it says to visit the Windows Store.
The store works fine for me of course, but none of these apps actually exist on the store.

Hi Gaf, quick question.
I did this (How to: Change User Folder Locations in Windows 7) on windows seven, and i wan't to make sure that it's still there and fine on 10, but i can't find my user thing, and when i go to the C drive and check my user folder that way, it says all my folders on my C drive. :( can anyone help. ?
Please

I'm having two problems after installing Windows 10 on my laptop.

1. My trackpad doesn't except two finger tap to right click anymore.

2. The sound sounds like it is passing through some kind of weird filter. Basically, the sound is somewhat tinny, and is lacking any type of bass.

Does anyone else have these problems or any kind of solution?

just updated guys but cortana won't work :S it says it's disabled due to company policy but this is my own computer I don't get it :S

I tried installing 352.86-desktop-win8-win7-winvista-64bit-international-whql earlier and windows wouldn't even detect it.

I had installed a fresh version of windows 8.1 a week and a half ago, but I guess there were still issues with the upgrade. I'll probably try again in a few days. I have no personal files installed as it's a brand new SSD, but I'd have to reinstall like 300 gigabytes worth of games and files, which I would have liked to avoid.

See my windows store app won't even load up. I click on the app and nothing. Sometimes it will pop up for a millisecond then disappear.

I've contacted Microsoft Support and are hopefully going to call me tomorrow after work. Hoping they will run through a clean re-install workaround or something :/

What a fuck up. I did absolutely nothing wrong and my pc has just turned into a chromebook effectively. :|

Got everything installed and updated and everything seems great but...I go to youtube and when I play a video it skips and lags...why is this happening? Windows 7 never did this to me..i might have to go back to 7 now. Anyone have a solution please let me know.

People with 144 Hz monitors - Remember to change it back to 144/120 Hz in the settings because mine was set to 64 as default

Just use the built-in reset feature. It wipes all data and reinstalls Windows.

Windows is probably indexing your hard drive to make search faster when you use it and that is probably taking up valuable CPU cycles and making youtube laggy.

Try a restart!

try going to downloads and check for updates...unfortunately I can't even update apps now...store is getting buried

I checked. I clicked the check updates button, but nothing appears. It does a quick scan and that's it. Nothing. Nada.
But like I said, these apps don't actually exist on the store to begin with.

Oh btw, how do I turn on Cortana? I don't see an option for her anywhere. Unless she's supposed to be that non-responsive search bar next to the start menu...

My desktop:
1. DVD install media failed to prepare, resolved with this.
2. Failed to upgrade after preparing and rebooting with
0xC1900101-0x20017
The installation failed in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during BOOT operation

Lately my desktop has been taking 30 seconds after hitting desktop to populate items in My PC, nothing in event viewer has been obvious as to the cause. Lately as in the last week.

Now I have it downloading from Windows update and a bunch of drivers showed up under optional - perhaps it's trying to fix itself.

Laptop:
Downloaded and still preparing because laptop chipsets are slow.

Desktop now works. One of the following fixed it:
1. Disabled all non-MS stuff on startup
2. Disconnected 360 wireless receivers from USB ports
3. Updated some drivers that magically showed up in Windows Update after it failed
4. Explicitly explored DVD media and right-clicked setup.exe as Admin

I've been working a while. Laptop is still at 12%, lol.

Installing from ISO on my stationary PC but cant confirm the product key, should I just skip this step and try once in Win 10?

Are MS servers getting hammered?

In other news, it seems the Scarlet.Crush driver for my Dualshock 3 still works. So I can at least continue playing pc games with it. :)

I mean that's probably the only positive thing I have to say about Win10 so far. The rest is an irreparable mess.

I just found out that the PC my girlfriend got from her brother has a non-genuine Windows 7 key. I recall reading about Microsoft doing updates for those users too but how exactly does it work? Would she get the full benefit of Windows 10 or is it like a reduced price thing?

Make sure all Window apps are closed.
Open PowerShell with admin privileges. Copy and paste the following line:

Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}

Hit enter.
It worked for me, but I still can't log in into my Microsoft Account :p

Used the MS media program to install on both PCs. One pc is the insider preview which went without a hitch..my laptop which was a student edition of W7.

Both installed fresh copies without a problem. no driver issues on the old PC or the 2 year old HP Folio laptop.

Probably offered buy a licence once he is stuck with Win 10. I think the price is the same as always, haven't read anything different.

Any Windows 7/8 key isn't usable as an activation key for Windows 10.

You need to do an upgrade, it then converts the current key into a W10 activation.

If you have upgraded and activated and everything seems good.

Settings - Update and Security - Recovery - Reset this pc

You don't even need to have it activated before you reset. Mine wouldn't activate, but I went ahead with the reset anyway. I thought I may have fucked up by doing this, as it then kept refusing to activate, but just a short while ago it automatically got activated.

I have two monitors. My primary is a 144hz and my secondary is a 60hz display. In Windows 8.1 I could could have them set appropriately, but now they both display at 60hz. Anyone have any tips on getting these to display their correct resolutions?

I have an AMD card and both displays are plugged into the card itself. Plugging the secondary into the mobo caused frequent BSOD in Windows 8.1.
