been using the Windows 10 preview since it came out. shit is lovely, it makes my old ass 2010 laptop feel fresh and new again. I did a fresh install when I installed it, which probably helped too.
 
Anybody know what the difference in Windows 10 Home and Pro are?

Or is that info not available yet?

My searches don't come up with much.

  • Windows 10 Home users will have updates from Windows Update automatically available. Windows 10 Pro and Windows 10 Enterprise users will have the ability to defer updates.
Only significant difference I've seen
 
Can't get the reservation window to pop up on Windows 7 SP1 and it's driving me crazy.

I had some corrupt Windows files a few months back so I repaired my installation and once I got it working again, I kept getting messages that it wasn't a legit copy despite me entering the key and still having the box right in front of me and it's driving me crazy. I wonder if that's why I didn't get the pop-up.
 
Hopefully we get the chance to do a clean install. I'm going to upgrade to a 1tb SSD and I'd like to re-install everything.

Also while MS is being nice how about a free update to office ;)
 
Still no notification (Win 7 Pro).
I ran the script multiple times (it gets done instantly), and I checked if I have the required updates (which I have).

Don't know why I still don't get the notification. (I also have the folder containing the GWX thingy).

Maybe because it's not available yet in France ?

I wouldn't worry about this too much. As we get closer to the release date, this will be available in other ways too.

If we're (not) optimistic, 30 years is about half your life.

Half Life 3 confirmed for Windows 10 devices released on your birthday.
 
Damn...I think I will wait with moving to Win 10 for somebody to make a crack/tweak that will stop automatic updates

The thing is, I'm worried about compatibility issues with my motherboard, and that maybe this is why I don't receive the notification.

I have a Gigabyte P35-DS4, which is an 8 years old card approximately.

I can run Windows 7 fine, but maybe my motherboard isn't supported anymore for Windows 10.

just need to run it for a minute or two and make sure its in the correct folder and run with admin rights. then reboot pc and it will show up.
 
I need to fix my windows 8.1 because it always fails to update and reverts with every method I have tried to fix it, deleting downloaded patches, installing only one at a time, running microsoft check software, nothing fixes the issue.

I feel like i'm out of luck getting windows 10 on this machine because the windows updater is shit.

Windows 8 was a huge departure in how everything worked. I know of multiple people (who are in the tech industry btw) who downgraded back to 7 because 8 was so confusing.

Jesus. If these people found Windows 8 'too confusing' they shouldn't be in the 'tech industry'. A few things are done differently or are in different places - it's not like Windows 8 is all like "so you want to get to the Control Panel - well riddle me this user..."

I'm not claiming Windows 8 is the height of intuitive usability but anyone familiar with computers should be able to figure everything out after a few hours and the odd bit of light Googling. And so what? I've been from DOS, to 3.11, 95, 98, XP, OS X, 7 and now 8.1 - not to mention various mobile OSs - taking a little time to get used to a new system is perfectly fine and normal. How anyone familiar with computers can be so bamboozled by another new OS is beyond me, and Windows 8 is not hard. At all. Now, if people don't like the way it works then that's perfectly fine and their prerogative - but this 'so confusing' schtick is hyperbolic nonsense.
 
This.

My mothers it technician at work has to phone up a support line every time something goes wrong in the office.

People "in the tech industry" who don't actually have any interest in tech and are just there for a job (most people it seems) frequently surprise me (or not) with their actual lack of technical ability when it comes to computing.

I'm not exactly sure if the updates will be applied automatically, since it says "automatically available." It could mean Pro users are able to make the OS only check for updates manually, while Home users have the OS constantly checking for updates and notifying them.

Not that I want to defend all those "so confusing" people (I don't), but Microsoft is also at fault here by dropping a completely new and different interface on users without providing any tutorial. If a user were familiar with Windows since 95 I can understand how replacing start menu with start screen could make him confused. Especially since there were no visual hints that clicking on corners do anything, let alone open the start screen or exit fullscreen apps. IIRC during the installation progress the user was only shown a short animation with text "move your mouse into any corner" and that was it. No explanation why you should move it, no explanation what charm bar is, how to switch between fullscreen apps etc.

A proper tutorial - something similar to what Google does with Android (context-depended hints) - would be really helpful.

When my parents got a new laptop with Windows 8 it took me just few minutes to explain that and they got it. But if they were left on their own I believe they would be lost.
 
Do we have confirmation yet that those of us on Technical Preview will be able to upgrade straight to the final version?

I did a google and several sites have been stating that we will be able to upgrade to the RTM.

I am not sure how final that will be since it would essentially work as a way for people to circumvent having to purchase Win 7 and 8.

Yeah. that's fine. I agree that for non-tech people MS should have done better. But for the (supposedly) computer literate it really shouldn't be an issue. With that said, even with a tutorial any sort of change will confuse most people who barely know how to operate the computer they have. I work in tech support and deal with a non-tech public all the time who don't know how to set their home page and get excited when you show them things like the windows snap function. There's only so much you can do. I think the metro UI was a borked attempt to cater for these people for whom an ipad is probably the best computing device. When all 90% of the public do is browse the web and check email they don't need anything else, most problems stem from people screwing up their own machines because they've got too much access and don't know what they're doing. Actually, if they were just locked into the Modern UI my job would be way easier. Or maybe I wouldn't have one... um.. command line for everyone!
 
I have an old Windows 7 laptop which I screwed up trying to install Linux Mint on another partition (no idea how that happened as it worked fine on my PC).
I can't work out how to fix it myself and don't want to return it to factory settings so I've basically just got a few GB of dead space on my laptop.

Would there be a way to upgrade to Windows 10 and remove any traces of Mint while keeping all the installed programmes and files as they are?

Right click the task-bar -> Look for "Notification area" click customize -> go to the one that says "GWX Get Windows 10" and change the behavior to hide icon and notifications.

edit: Or you can hit the up arrow on the system tray and go to customize there.
 
However, it seems the only true method is to uninstall the Windows Update that activated it, as simply disabling notifications on the icon doesn't appear to stick through a restart.
 
Reserved my place through the pop-up. The pop-up it's still there but it not doing anything, is it normal? Edit: Looks like it is.

Also, I wanted to do reformat next week, what happens to my reservation?

Ah, I was unaware of this. The icon also stays in the expanded system tray.
 
Is Windows 10 only free for a year if you upgrade from 7/8?

What if I were to buy a new laptop later this year? Will W10 be free then too?

A new laptop should come with Windows 10 installed.

Win 10 is free forever if you're upgrading from a genuine copy of 7/8.
 
I got the little icon asking if I wanted to reserve my free copy of Win 10. Hopefully there is a backwards install feature just incase something goes terribly wrong. I need my laptop for school. LoL
