So, how many people from GAF are going to remain in the Windows Insider program for good?

- Buy Windows 10. You get a new key (or you upgrade from a previous valid Windows installation). Microsoft will provide updates and new features as time goes by.
- Stay with the Insider Preview program. I understand that this is MS's desktop OS equivalent of the Xbox One Preview system. Once you join this on the Xbox One, you get new features early on. But the important bit is that MS needs to guarantee system stability and all base functions even with this preview stuff. Because when an OS update breaks someone's Xbox One, they'll scream to high heavens.
Am I understanding this correct?
You should be able to just download it after release. This is just MS' way to try and build pre-release hype and get good day one numbers.

how does the 8.1 -> 10 license upgrade work btw.
Will i be able to re-use my 8.1 key on another machine? (if not, i can just buy one for 0$ via Dreamspark / University).
Will the 10 license be tied to my Microsoft / Live account?
Only thing for sure is it seems to be tied to one machine forever, so no moving it around.

So I want to try streaming on W10 from my X1, and supposedly there's a "Connect" or "Connected" tab in the Xbox app, but I don't see it at all?
My X1 is on, streaming enabled, my PC doesn't seem to detect it at all. Anyone have a clue? The settings seem pretty bland and I can't do much there.

I tried to do game streaming but the xbox app crashes instantly when I hit the stream button. Im connected via a wired conntection.
What's your PC spec like? I don't think they've released a minimium, but I'm assuming that there is one. Things that don't work don't like to show up.
If it's good enough, then it's probably a router port forwarding issue. The ports it uses are

Thanks. Specs should not be an issue, but I did nothing as far as port forwarding goes. So I'll get into that first.

Can't wait for Windows 10, but I'm a bit afraid of launch day download issues.
Start menu is annoying with full screen metro interface and all, but otherwise Windows 8.1 has been an improvement. I just ignore the metro stuff.

Well, the amount of testing and testers is ridiculous. Downloading-wise I can kind of expect something going wrong, but Microsoft has plenty of server experience and they should have a very good idea of how many downloaders there are.
I'm not expecting much trouble if you managed to get through the download phase.

Windows 8.1 destroyed my Toshiba laptop before all the bug fixes came 5-6 months later.
8.1 basically gave me almost all the things I wanted from 7 back.
Still isn't as good as 7 but it's not far off.
Looking forward to 10 in a few days.

I swapped my Desktop HDD from my old Toshiba laptop, so it's legit...but it's on a different PC it has always said, not legit but i've never had an issue.
It says I can have windows 10 for free.
I won't have any issues just upgrading right?
I just installed a program for a normal start menu and disabled the hot corners. Have barely spent 10 minutes in the metro menu in total and I see absolutely no reason why I would use 7 over 8.1.
I've not had issues, but judging from others in the thread, no.
Get the tool linked so you can hide the NVidia updates or you'll get the latest one forced on your constantly.
Didn't help unfortunately. I jsut don't have the "Connect" tab on neither of my PC's. I'll try updating the Xbox app, but I doubt its outdated already.
Edit: So that was it. Lol. Sigh.
It isn't just boot speed though, the OS in general is quicker and more efficient. For me, it would have been ridiculous to ignore that and all the other upgrades in the OS just because there was some silly start screen I didn't need to use.
The latest one is 353.62, it doesn't have any problems as far as I'm aware.
i'd upgrade from 7 to 8.1 for the task manager alone...
Well, streaming worked decent. I don't think Wireless is going to be an option, stuttered way too much (Any of you can run that properly?) Wired wasn't bad.

Legit question my boss asked me about Windows 10. (Because the company's owner is asking us about it since he just saw a thing about it.)
Based on news, the Pro version only lets you delay updates for a time frame. We use WSUS for updates to test for problems with our software and such before rolling them out. Will Windows 10 work with WSUS or is WSUS being scrapped with Windows 10? Or would it require Enterprise?
Sometimes it takes our programmers a good bit of time to find a work around if an update does break something. If WSUS is not an option with 10 then obviously we could not upgrade to 10 anytime soon.

Unless you enjoy living on the edge like I do, I wouldn't install it on anything important like that for at least a week.
Not really sure as a lot will depend on your setup. Bring up task manager, go to Networking and see how much of your connection is being utilized while streaming. If it's floating around the 90-100% mark, then I don't think there will be a lot you can do, but it shouldn't need that much. if it's lower, then the issue will be your XB1 or router. you'd be surprised just how awful some routers are.

Don't know the exact time but they have said it'll be staggered so the exact start time might not make a difference depending on where you are in line.
I was thinking this, will there be any way to force update like Windows Phone?

will the preview build of windows 10 continue working after the 29th?
I'll give that a try. One thing though, will upgrading the cables make a noticable difference? I've only ever used CAT5 Ethernet cables, and those seem to be quite outdated at this point.

I find it silly that anyone thinks that Windows 7 is genuinely better than Windows 8.1.
Seeing that the Metro stuff can pretty much all be ignored. So you have a better file transfer, task manager, faster boot times, faster everything, native ISOs, bit better with multiple monitors and an easy option to completely reset your PC.
There are a few inconveniences at times, but I consider there are very little solid reasons for why one would prefer Windows 7 other than being blindly biased.

For those of you guys who are already on Win 10, how would you rate it in comparison to Win 7 and 8? On a scale of 1-10.

If you're running 10240, you're running the release build.
As long as it's "activated", it'll keep running.

Keep in mind, if you're still opted into the insider program, you're going to keep getting insider builds, which you may or may not want.
There's a way to opt out, but I can't remember what it is.

I reinstalled Windows 8, entered my 8 CD key, upgraded to Windows 8.1 and then 10.
I then formatted and clean installed 10 and skipped entering a CD key, and Windows 10 was automatically activated. It obviously ties to your hardware and activates from that.

There are no solid reasons to prefer 7 over 8.1, literally none.
So I've done this, Nvidia driver showed up and I ticked it. You have to have an update available for it to appear though.
Hopefully that stops it, but I'll report back if it happens away in the future.
EDIT: Doesn't work, installed anyway
EDIT2: It might work, but in a stupidly inelegant way. The drivers errored on install. It also uninstalled my current driver to prep for the new one. Godammit.

I know the answer is going to be no, but I figured I would ask anyway. I have been wondering if their is anyway to merge some of the start buttons functions with Cortana? I have been looking for an option, but it doesn't seem to exist. I just feel like having the Cortana button be the main function, as opposed to the Start Button would be so much better. You could just put the power options, app lists and any other important buttons on the side bar that Cortana brings up when you click in the text box.

It would be kinda nice to have a "Cortana" column in the start menu, like the live tile columns. Maybe even just have your normal start menu stuff and cortana next to it and no live tiles, if you want. Having the two interaction points is a little bit odd.

Yeah, the two points of interaction is odd to me. I would just totally replace the Start Button ideally, getting rid of live tiles entirely. Merge the necessary Start Button functions into Cortana and call it a day.
WSUS is still supported just as it always has been, in full force. The talk about automatic updates is just for people getting updates directly from the live Windows Update service.
