Windows 10 Troubleshooting Thread

How long does a restore to previous build take usually? It's been running for a few hours already with dozens of restarts and no real visible progress (always the same screen coming up).

Does it revert me back to 10074? Can I go to 8.1 from there? I should've just wiped the HDD and be done with it in 20 minutes... the time it takes to roll back could've installed all available Windows Updates on a fresh 8.1 install.

I had a bit of a disastrous Sunday. My main PC decided to go to silicon heaven, taking the install of Windows 10 RTM with it. I have an ISO, which when the new bits arrive I can install from this. However you don't get a key, and I didn't copy it down.

Any idea how this works? Do I have to try and find my Windows 7 disc (after moving house twice), then install my Windows 8 upgrade?

I actually removed Windows 10 from my Surface Pro 3 yesterday. The unreliable WiFi was the final straw, it just drops every 20 mins or so when streaming iPlayer. It made me miss the start of the F1. The battery life was terrible as well.

Still WAY too buggy, inconsistent, and its main features (Edge, Cortana) are still undercooked. Edge stutters and freezes, and Cortana still doesn't have hooks into the accounts that matter.

I've heard that some third party drivers (especially Nvidia) have had problems too, though they're finally starting to get sorted out with the release so close.

I'm still planning to update as soon as it becomes available. At worst, I can just do a clean Win 8.1 install and wait until 10 is a little more stable, but I'm going to guess that 10 will be decent enough out of the box to justify keeping it installed.

Well, technically its not even out yet. Isnt there a possibility of a lof of this being fixed on the Wednesday build?

The MS employee that's been posting has suggested there a lot of bugfixes that will be part of the release on the 29th.

Nobody's forcing you to upgrade, and you have a year to get it for free.

Take your time, smell the roses. It's all good.

I'm enjoying it quite a bit though. I installed Visual Studio Express this morning, doing some C# coding. Works great.

Runs perfectly fine on my system, I did not encounter any bugs or problems with Edge. I don't know why it's necessary to spread FUD here. The OS was properly tested by Microsoft and countless participants of the insider program. It's probably in a better state than Windows 8 when it launched.

yikes....should I hold off on upgrading? I'm on 8.1

If you are a normal consumer, go for it. If you are a professional and want to install W10 on a critical device which, for example, controls life support systems in a hospital, wait.

Windows 10 is still in technical preview. There is no "old" driver for people to cling to, everything is pre-release. Whatever NVidia drivers are available on release day are going to be the first Windows 10 versions, therefore the "slow" path can only exist past release. No way MS will simply let NVidia roll out drivers into Windows Update without going through certification first. That's the entire point behind "WHQL" drivers.

I tried my worst to break it but couldn't yet. I used an ap for that too, a long time ago, but I remember one or other program that didn't play nice with it and had to set exceptions. It even works in the UE4 editor, where all the UI is custom made.

Yeah, I'd not expect any bugs as the behavior is not really complicated. When the scroll wheel is used just pass the action to the application the mouse pointer is on instead of the currently focused one.

I installed the 10240 build on two of my computers the other day, and still haven't experienced any issues. Also, Witcher 3 runs nicely, so does Fallout New Vegas.

Lovin' it like McDonald's.

My Windows 8 tablet never got the little update notification in the desktop menu bar, do I need that in order to upgrade it, or can I just go to the Microsoft website after July 29th and do it from there?

I've had the icon in my Windows 7 PC's menu bar for months now and I did say I wanted to upgrade with that computer.

Only thing that pisses me off is since Windows 10 the Netflix app sometimes freezes the video while the audio continues and so does YouTube. It's been an issue for about 3 weeks now.

Plus my color settings keep changing to RGB instead of 4.4.4. That could be Nvidia drivers though.

Doesn't all the super serious stuff that needs absolute stability run on Linux anyway?

Probably a stupid question, but does W10 come with a mandatory IE update? I remember being locked out of my bank account for a couple of days when upgrading to 8.1 because of that.

"I know you're doing a very important task, but let me refresh your video drivers so you're stuck at a shit resolution untill you reboot. I'm gonna do it 2 times a week without warning because I love you"

FUCK YOU MICROSOFT.

A lot of things, but there's plenty of Windows Server stuff. Even OSX Server.
Mainframes run z/OS.... and that's a whole other animal.

It comes with IE11 as well as Microsoft Edge.

Does your bank support other browsers? If they do, fall back on one of those. (If they don't, get a new bank.)

Apologies if this has been answered before (this thread is hard to keep up with), but I'm currently dual booting Windows 7 Home and Windows 8.1 Pro. My main OS is the Windows 7 Home one, so I was wondering if it was possible to upgrade that and use my Windows 8.1 Pro key somehow to get Windows 10 Pro?

Upgrade the 8.1 install to Windows 10, that will mean you end up with a 10 Pro license. Then just fresh install on the Win 7 partition with Win 10 ISO. It should just auto activate as its the same hardware. We are still waiting on concrete info on fresh installs, but you will definatly need to upgrade your 8.1 Pro to get 10 Pro.

Totally regretting upgrading. The Win 10 Nvidia drivers have ALL been shit for my card (670 GTX). The newest drivers today won't even detect my fucking card.

Bummer, I'm hoping to avoid a fresh install. Thanks though!

Previous windows installments were no stranger to visual inconsistencies. Windows 10 has them but it's far more a solid release than the majority of past ones. I'm relived most icons since 95/vista have been updated. It feels a lot fresher.

It may be a little rough around the edges but it's a solid start. I'm sure we'll be through with its growing pains by next July. I have a feeling we'll see some compromises regarding driver updates. I still think security patches and stability updates should remain automatic for the home version plebs. They'll never notice.

Hmmm, I'm upgrading to 10 personally when the times comes, but this thread is making me wary of updating my family's computer, I'm giving them my old computer as soon as my parts for the new one arrive, I was going to do the 8.1 to 10 thing, but it looks like it might be less hassle for them if I just stick them with 8.1?

Should be able to just update directly, but possibly not day one. I didn't have it showing up on my tablet either, but I tried a command posted on one of the Microsoft support forums which rechecks the compatibility and that seemed to do the trick making the Windows icon appear in the task bar.

On a side note since you mentioned Netflix, does it have cortana support?

It's the NVidia drivers. They "forget" some of the settings (full/limited, 4.4.4 RGB, etc) when updated. I have had to re-configure those on every NVidia update back in my 8.1 days.

I am doing something similar for my mother. My suggestion is to test it yourself. You can roll back the upgrade safely within a month of its installation. You'll be aware of any pesky incompatibilities and driver hiccups within a day or two of regular use. Then make your decision. This is mostly an issue with gamers rightfully being concerned about losing control over and gpu drivers.

This launch is a bit sudden, but at least it will kick MS into delivering the next updates faster and more often I guess. Also, the Insider program will continue so they'll be constantly taking feedback to improve things.

This Nvidia driver thing is really starting ti bug me

Where is windows update getting these drivers from if they;re not on Nvidia's website?

EDIT: also can someone else try something for me? while on a skype call with a wired headet plug a wired controller in. now does the computer just suddenly stop responding to the headset? i've had to restart every time I plug the controller in.

I'm in Canada so I don't have it at all sadly.

It's the NVidia drivers. They "forget" some of the settings (full/limited, 4.4.4 RGB, etc) when updated. I have had to re-configure those on every NVidia update back in my 8.1 days.

Had a feeling it might do. Also seems to forget every single game setting forced through the 3D settings part too. Now that is frustrating.

People have to remember that no one cares more about not releasing botched updates than Microsoft themselves. That includes driver updates. Customer support is incredibly expensive to run, ignoring the obvious other aspects like PR problems and a negative image dissuading people from continuing to use Microsoft products in the future.

Enabling people to opt-out of driver updates is not the (or 'a') solution, since the vast majority of people never do that anyway.

When you release a new driver to millions of people, and that driver is botched, it's not right to say "well you should have turned automatic driver updates off". Because 90%+ are still screwed. Instead, it's on Microsoft to fix it and make sure it never happens again.

I know you're not official Microsoft PR or anything but any thoughts on this

The thing for me is I never install all the extras that come with the Nvidia software, so I'd like an option to still do a custom install which apparently isn't possible ATM.

see 90% of the stuff Nvidia package into a driver update is useless crap. Is this going to change? where is the line if companies are allowed to install driver + anything

Is there any way to convert an 8.1 code to a 10 code without going through the whole upgrade process? I've got a couple lying around, and for whatever reason my OEM code is busted (think I deleted something trying a workaround for... something or other).

Are all you guys having Nvidia driver problems running dual monitors?

I'm not having any issues like you've been saying. 780ti, 4790k. Nvidia ver 353.62.

Video drivers automatically reinstalled for the third time now. Fuck Windows 10, seriously.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3073930

Use this to stop Windows from updating the drivers. It's the only solution right now. It's a shit solution too. They need to rethink this automatic update solution. I get it for the Windows related security, but drivers should be off limits. Even the Windows stuff was broken with an update or two ago.

My only issue is that Windows continues to reinstall my video drivers along with the extra bloatware from Nvidia. There's no way to opt out.

Keep forced updates for security patches, new Windows features, whatever. Stay away from third party drivers.

I only have one monitor and one video card.

What part of the Nvidia drivers do you consider bloatware?
Maybe because I have a 3D Vision monitor I don't think there's anything extra...

Eh, only the 3D Vision and HD audio stuff. I guess bloatware isn't the right word when we have terrabytes of HDD space and >= 16GB of RAM.

But still, keep Windows Update away from forced third party driver updates. Shit can go wrong in so many ways and now there's no way to go back if something breaks.
