Windows 10 Troubleshooting Thread

Anyone know if we can upgrade our technical previews with a valid Windows 8 key? If not, how long til the Technical Preview stops being usable?

What technical preview do you have? How did you install it?

If you upgraded to 10240 and have an activated copy then you already have a valid version of windows 10 and don't have to do anything.

Can you do a fresh install with this thing? I feel like starting with a clean slate.

Upgrade and then use the reset option. It carries out a format of the hard drive from windows recovery environment and then clean installs Windows 10.

It happened to me.

I guess it just a coincidence. Some people reported 6GB size folders and then it went back to 140MB.

Mine has been 4,56GB on disk (6,11GB) from the first time I've looked and hasn't moved since then, even after trying the exe and try to install.

It's midnight here too, I guess this won't happen right away.

Just a question: do I have to reinstall drivers, software, etc. if I decide to upgrade from 8.1 to 10?

My apologies if it's been answered already

Also, how do we download it? I've reserved a copy already and it's July 29 here in Aus

Drivers: Yes if you're not using the built-in Windows Update ones.

Everything was deleted except a 10 MB file called sources. I hope I didn't permanently screw things up.

Wasn't it established that the reset isn't quite as good as a proper fresh install? I'm actually asking here as I have no idea, but that's what I've been told.

Worked for me instantly!

I think we need a quick GAF FAQ from someone who has been following this.

From reddit, apparently the failed state for the Update is normal and means you will just finish it off tomorrow. It's failing because it isn't the right time yet. I am not sure how true that is.

They confirmed that both Reset and Refresh are pretty much the same as a clean install.
They both involve formatting the hard disc via windows recovery environment and then clean installing Windows 10 again. I can't see how it is any different.

I have the same in my file history; I think its bollocks - try the steps outlined in my previous post. Worked for me so the fail should not affect you.

What if I don't want to do a reset or fresh. I want to take my Genuine Windows 10 key after I update tomorrow and apply to another install on another drive.

It there a way to deactivate my genuine key on one install and move it over to another install to make that genuine?

You won't get a specific key given to you, they are just using generic keys for everyone upgrading as far as we are aware.

The installs are based on the motherboard/hardware ID.

You can create an ISO from the esd files windows update downloads, mount that to a bootable USB and then perform a clean install to the new HDD. Skip any CD key requests and let Windows 10 activate it self based upon your motherboard/hardware ID which it now associates with an activated copy of Windows 10.

How many of you are going to keep fucking around with files and then blame MS when the upgrade fails?

right. it's literally hours from release.

everyone seems to have a different size folder so there's no real way of knowing if there's more to the update

If you don't have the Windows 10 reserve icon showing up and you haven't reserved yet, try this:

Code:
REG QUERY "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\UpgradeExperienceIndicators" /v UpgEx | findstr UpgEx
if "%errorlevel%" == "0" GOTO RunGWX
reg add "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Appraiser" /v UtcOnetimeSend /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
schtasks /run /TN "\Microsoft\Windows\Application Experience\Microsoft Compatibility Appraiser"
:CompatCheckRunning
schtasks /query /TN "\Microsoft\Windows\Application Experience\Microsoft Compatibility Appraiser"
schtasks /query /TN "\Microsoft\Windows\Application Experience\Microsoft Compatibility Appraiser" | findstr Ready
if NOT "%errorlevel%" == "1" ping localhost >nul &goto :CompatCheckRunning
:RunGWX
schtasks /run /TN "\Microsoft\Windows\Setup\gwx\refreshgwxconfig"

Save this code in a new notepad file and then rename it as a .cmd and run it. Worked instantly for me a few weeks ago.

Ok, that seems to be doing something. Lets see what happens.

Did you have the BT folder btw? I did but was stuck at 140MB - now downloaded and preparing for installation the folder is filling up (and Windows no longer using my network, so preparing the downloaded files I guess).

Might be people who get the fail need to do something like this just to kick it off right now. FYI for anyone else.

5am GMT as I read, only in the morning can I install it

Definitely 5am? Did a search on Twitter and some UK people are getting all excited thinking it's hitting at midnight. Guess they're just presuming then? I'd love it if the download unlocks at midnight (almost finished downloading the pre-load) but I'm guessing 5am is probably more realistic. If so I'll install it first thing when I wake up tomorrow.

some pages back some answer me that would be 5 am for my timezone (the same as the UK) so guess I have to wait I would love a midnight release

I had it before but it was stuck at 4.80 GB.

Not sure what to make of this. Everyone has different file sizes so it's hard to know what's what and what to expect. I guess we really shouldn't be messing with any of this.

The big issue was that it said failed, which always raises a red flag. Anyways, 8.1 is up and running again. Lets see what happens.

GUYS! QUICK UPDATE FOR THOSE DOING THE wuauclt.exe /updatenow:

It may not be the case for everyone, but my experience led me to believe Windows Update needs to automatically download and install updates for this to work. I had it set to not do so originally, which is why I couldn't get the Windows 10 update.

MAKE SURE YOUR UPDATE SETTINGS ALLOW WINDOWS TO DO ITS DUTY!

*ahem*

carry on folks. :3

Grrh, I still don't have that reserve icon, I've installed all the updates, tried doing the code thing. I have a genuine copy of Windows 8.1 Pro. I must be doing something wrong. I guess I'll try again tomorrow :/
