wuauclt.exe /updatenow did nothing for me.

I have every update installed on Windows 8.1, ran the command in admin, and I have 10+ GB of free space (this is a Dell Venue 8 Pro tablet).

UPDATE: got it working, had to set updates to auto install.

Was wondering why I wasn't able to get any pre-loading going, but setting updates to auto-install did the trick. Thanks!

You have an entire year (starting from tomorrow). Unless you want to be one of the 1st to upgrade (Windows Insiders will be one of the 1st group to upgrade), you can rest easy and upgrade anytime in the next year for free!

I managed to re-download it from scratch. I deleted the whole $Windows.~BT folder and everything in C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download.

The $Windows.~BT folder came back quickly and it seemed to initiate the download but not fully. By entering 'wuauclt.exe /updatenow' in cmd the downloaded started immediately and now I have this ESD:

It seems even if you have Windows 8 en-us you'll get Windows 10 en-gb? Is that common?

All preparing means is that it is decompressing the upgrade folder...nothing related to servers....so no relation to time zones at this point in the upgrade process.

I was referring to the specific step on the windows update window which says preparing.... I was looking at my BT folder while this step was doing its thing, and the folder was expanding from 140 MB to the normal 5 GB+ size.

The command line trick didn't do squat for me, with or without an empty SoftwareDistribution\Download folder, or after running Fix It. On Win7 Pro, fully updated and set to update automatically reserved the day it was available.

Cola I had the same thing, try deleting the distribution folder thing posted in here, re run the command prompt command and it will redownload it, gave me the option to start the upgrade after that.

My first crash came from trying to open coretemp (cpu monitor). I could move my cursor but I couldn't do anything else.
I'd make sure the mouse settings are the same once you install. Mine felt a bit different and I had to increase the speed.

CoreTemp 1.0 RC6 or RC7? RC7 should work with Windows 10.

I'm on the East Coast and still nothing here... It's fully downloaded, but nothing is happening.

Okay got it downloading now using the reddit method + setting windows update to automatically download and install + deleting all the files in that C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download folder + running some stupid fix for a windows update error 80246007 that came up that caused the update to fail after I did that and then running the command again.

From what I know, you will have to upgrade your 7 to 10, and then reset Windows 10 from there (which effectively will leave you with clean Windows 10)

The first time you install W10 I believe it has to be installed over 7/8.1. Afterwards you're free to do a clean install (reset Windows 10), but you can't do it initially.

FWIW this is my experience so far:

Downloaded some random updates last night - these failed with an error code which meant that windows was 'already installing some updates'.

Rebooted and tried to update again. Worked this time.

No sign of Windows 10 so I ran the cmd line thing - my BT folder went from 57mb to 5.4gb.

Failed windows 10 update.

Checked for updates again - it found one for Windows defender which I installed.

Rebooted and there were now 2 more failures for Windows 10

Ran the update fix tool. It found 3 issues and fixed them. Checked for updates and nothing.

Emptied the Download folder as per reddit and ran the command again. BT folder emptied out.

Now it says in updates it's downloading Windows 10 - I didn't get that before, even when it seemed to be putting something in my BT folder.

So maybe it has something to do with trying to download Windows 10 while it was running other updates previously. We'll see. 17% downloaded...

So my Windows Update download has been stuck at 2,712.6MB for the past 20 minutes but the percentage keeps increasing from 40% and now it is at 94% complete but still same 2,712.6MB.

I use Edge with UAC disabled (build 10240), and managed to disable Windows Defender through group policy editor (gpedit.msc). Hasn't come back on, either.

Who's clean installing and whos upgrading?

I did a clean install back in mid-May when I got an SSD so I'm just upgrading to 10. Don't see a point in doing another clean install so soon when I haven't really done much since the last one.

Still contemplating whether I should wait a week or two or not, especially since I think it's already pre-downloaded.
