Windows 10 Troubleshooting Thread

After trying all night and using the Reddit trick, etc the tool that M52B28 linked let me upgrade.

No idea why they bothered with the "reserve" crap if I could just download a file and skip the BS.

Due to my GPT Windows 10 partition going bad last night, I had to reinstall windows from scratch. I popped my 8.1 pro USB key in and after the installation completed it offered to upgrade to Windows 10 at the end of setup. If course I clicked yes as I had no 10 pro rtm ISO at hand. Pretty cool. I guess this is how they'll get new 8.1 owners to jump into 10 nearly stress free.

Are you saying win10 doesn't like GPT partitioning? I'm afraid to touch my hackintosh...

told myself I wasn't gonna upgrade right away... but of course I did. I tried using the official update, but it wouldn't start downloading after midnight. So I used an RTM build iso and upgraded my >2 year old Windows 7 Ultimate to Windows 10 Pro in under half an hour. It was really fast and painless and as far as I can tell, all my programs and special context menu tools and other stuff carried over without a hitch.

I like the fact that they asked me if they could change my default programs instead of just doing it.

All seems well, installed a few updates, all works very well.

oh, and Windows 10 was instantly activated.

Because any sane person doesn't give a shit about having a new OS a minute after midnight maybe? Or the fact that this whole reserve thing basically makes the whole process as seamless as it gets as it requires very little interaction from the user itself? Good god.

Checking for updates using the media creation tool, while the WU actually got rid of the Windows 10 confirmation!

It does actually it's the best way to do it but for some odd reason it ate shit on my laptop and couldn't be recovered from an install usb. GPT is supposed to be able to be recoverable but it's still new to me so I may have missed some obvious step to recover it.

Anyhow everything's fine now. Maybe it as the huge thunderstorm that zapped my ssd last night. No idea. My other computers in the house with GPT are still fine. Weird.

This happened a couple weeks after I got the final version through the preview.

Does this system give you a prompt for regular or pro edition? Or do I have to wait for windows to decide i'm worthy with the queue system in place?

I'm on a domain locked comp so I couldn't use the app. I used that link and it didn't require an ISO. It pulls your current windows version and says you will be upgraded to equivalent.

For those of you waiting or having other issues like no app, just try that link

Be aware that even just launching this will wipe your $Windows.~BT folder. I don't know if that screwed up my upgrade from WU or not so I'm getting it to download an ISO instead.
Yup, I just got the "Something happened" screen too. Guess I'll really just need to use an ISO.

Hmm. I'm not sure if I should try upgrading right away, or if I should just wait. I'm mid play through of Fallout New Vegas with a bunch of mods installed and I don't want to risk something screwing up, but I'm way too curious about Windows 10 and I still have a couple dozen hours left in that game.

Also, are there any drivers for the Asus Xonar DG? Google doesn't find anything. I don't want to go without sound.

After launching this, it hasn't said anything about editions. I'm still downloading.

Currently at 77% after around twenty five minutes or so.

Well I got fucked. Black screen with Mouse pointer issue that some had in the earlier builds apparently. Tried all known fixes from back then and none work for this. Hopefully a PC reset will save my computer.

This wave stuff is Bullshit. My laptop got in and is upgrading but my desktop isn't?

Come the fuck on Microsoft, they're both PC's on the same network and main I.P address.

And.....graphics driver crash, Nvidia 64 bit. second screen is down and wow came to a glitchy halt, let's see what a reboot does.

So with that tool they released i can just make a boot disc drive right? Which would allow me to format my HD and just clean install windows 10 right? Because im tired of waiting and this update shit is taking forever.

OK, thoughts...

I really liked the Windows 8 start screen, but I'm liking the start menu much more than I thought.

Edge is pretty good, and damn fast. Also it's a really nice pdf reader.

Apps in windows is awesome.

You can make a boot DVD/USB with it. Unless you have a Win10 key, you HAVE to upgrade first before formatting and doing a clean install. Otherwise you won't be activated.

Glad I'm on vacation, last time I did Windows 8 on "opening day" it took me freaking hours to ge the PoS Citrix Receiver to work so I could connect to work.

And with the OS being so new there was nothing helpful online lol

lol wut

Started the installer and the only option is to nuke everything and start over, because my "current version of Windows might be installed in an unsupported directory." What is this supposed to mean? My Win7 is just on my little SSD. No partitioning, no dual booting, nothing weird.

Fuck it, it's too late for this nonsense. Good night and good luck, folks. :p

So if i use the "upgrade" option first to get Windows 10 up and running and then use the disc to do a clean install should be fine?

Yes. That is exactly what I did.

Do the upgrade option first. Then clean install.
When you get to clean installing, it may ask you for a key. Skip it. Your machine's hardware ID is stored at Microsoft, which is why you must upgrade first, so it saves your activation and restores once Windows 10 completes the install.

Also, during the install if it asks you what version of Windows to install, choose the one you had prior (Home, Pro, etc.) Choosing the wrong one will not get activated.

Finally, using that media creation tool I was able to create an ISO to use instead.

now it's at 4% on the computer I'm installing it on.

sorry if this just a basic question, but do we really need to use microsoft account when upgrading from win 8.1 to win 10? since somehow i still prefer & want to use local account & doesn't care that much of microsoft account sync stuff etc.

Thank you for the info!!!
