Windows 10 Troubleshooting Thread

What is the reason I shouldn't choose to do a clean install if I know I'm gonna run the reset thing after upgrading anyway? What's the difference?

EDIT: Also, if I choose to keep nothing, will that wipe my second (non-system) partition too? Or just the system partition?

Stands to reason that there is.

I get nothing but error messages when I attempt that command line trigger.
 
W10 install in progress now on work PC!

Home PC still has some issue. gotta update more updates before it updates apparently. i'll try again when i get home.
 
I'm using the tool someone posted earlier to update but it's default to Hebrew, even tho my Windows is in English

I can't seem to change the language and it tells me I can't upgrade with my applications because I chose to upgrade to Windows in a different language. Is there anyway to fix this?

Seriously, GAF, should I just wait it out a few more hours, or do I have to obtain another copy of windows and start the install over?

I don't get that. It's giving me three options right now (paraphrasing): "Keep personal files and apps", "Keep only personal files", and "Keep nothing". (I don't even know why it's talking about apps. I'm on W7, ain't no apps here.)

Should I keep everything in order to get a W10 key? How does that make sense? Or rather, why does it care whether or not I keep all my installed junk?
 
Anybody using windows 10 with an nvidia card OLDER than 400 series? The official Windows 10 drivers don't support those. I didn't have time to mess around with it last night. But anybody have any luck with any particular driver using a card older than 400 series? I have a GT 220 in my old HTPC.
 
So, I won't have a PC hooked up for another month probably, because of a big move. Will it still be available as a free update then?

Apps = program's installed. So if you don't want to reinstall all your games, you pick that option.

So yeah tried the delete (well, I backed it up), it still says "We'll let you know, etc." message. I guess my country still hasn't started it.
 
Seems like the biggest question people are having with the upgrade is where is my key? I think browsing the places like reddit and here are more enthusiast and likely to clean install and transfer to a new custom machine. I'm running a key checking software and one showed a generic one and the other showed a different key (maybe my W8 key).

I don't think I'm going to build a new machine for a while but if I do hopefully I can just plug in my SSD without it giving me too much of an issue.

Yes, that's weird. And also, I don't like how context menus have animations now and take up more space for the taskbar. The entries in the "All Programs" menu too. They look so ugly because of the missing icons and it's harder to find what you are looking for.

Was wondering about this--I accidentally fucked my boot partition when re-installing the preview so I can't boot my win 7 disk right now. If possible I'd love to just upgrade my insider preview without figuring out how to boot into my win 7 disk, was going to clean install anyway.

If I boot win 7 on another PC can I get a key or something to install it on that tech preview PC?

Briefly saw a an update happening now I'm back to "update fail"

What's the point of preloading 6 gigs if people who download the tool on launch get to install first? Makes no fucking sense
 
Installing now on both my laptop and desktop. My HP Stream 7 is still being a pain in the ass, with the installation failing every single time.

Yeah, but I don't care about that. I want everything gone and start fresh. But the other guys were saying this is somehow tied to getting a W10 product key...? That's what I don't get.

Also, if I choose to delete everything, will that spare my second (non-system) partition? That's the only stuff I don't want deleted, my system partition I'll happily wipe clean.
 
Ran into a few bugs after playing around for an hour, but nothing bad enough to spoil the great impression Win10 makes. Really happy with the upgrade.

My interpretation was people wanted a key tied to the hardware from an upgrade, then they were going to nuke the drive and install fresh. Fresh in this sense would be a format install vs having windows upgrade throw things into windows_old or something with the keep nothing option.
 
Got Windows 10 up and running on my Surface Pro 3.

Overall, its a blast to use it. I ran into some problems while using its proprietary photo editing tool. Tried to crop my photos. Encountered some lag.

Ok. So "keep nothing" should be fine for me then? It won't wipe my second (non-system) partition, right?

I have that disabled, I don't want it to automatically add whatever it wants, I just want to drag or pin shortcuts there like you could in previous versions.

The more I use the OS the more restrictive it feels, you can't even tidy up the all apps menu, it doesn't let you move or delete shortcuts, even for 3rd party "apps".

Same. I can't find my disc and think it might be back at my parents house. I'd rather be guinea pig then go snooping around there for it.

Just do the upgrade and cleanup later.

The Windows installation backups its current settings using a Windows Transfer Tool and then reinjects itself to a new installation.

Hence why people have to reinstall video drivers and other things for an upgrade install.

Isn't that how that worked for Windows 7? Most recent apps.

You can expand the start menu by clicking on the upper and right edges with the <-> cursor appears on your mouse.

I have mine expanded all the way out since I actually like my start menu taking up the full screen.

That I don't know. I only had one drive when I pulled that trigger and I'm not done yet either. If it's just files and data then maybe unplug it.

I'm going to do a full backup of everything before I trust a day 0 installer with my stuff on my gaming rig.
 
I only got to play around a tiny bit this morning before work and I'm hoping the fresh install I'm going to do tonight alleviates this, but my second monitor wasn't working this morning and my one remaining monitor was stuck at 1024x768. I didn't see any available video card driver updates available. Anyone know what might be causing this?
 
fuck this, im downloading Windows 10 setup. This Windows upgrade nonsense is ridiculous, I have a legit Windows 8.1 pro key.
