Windows 10 Troubleshooting Thread

I only got to play around a tiny bit this morning before work and I'm hoping the fresh install I'm going to do tonight alleviates this, but my second monitor wasn't working this morning and my one remaining monitor was stuck at 1024x768. I didn't see any available video card driver updates available. Anyone know what might be causing this?

You need to do a CLEAN (use the advanced options) install of the 353.62 Nvidia drivers if you're part of team green.

Checked update history, "Update to Windows 10 Pro" has failed 5 times.

Any help?

Seriously, GAF, should I just wait it out a few more hours, or do I have to obtain another copy of windows and start the install over?

Do you have a tv hooked up? The install made it my main monitor and I didn't realize at first that was the case, since the tv was turned off. Was seeing black screen with mouse cursor on my pc monitor.

I have that disabled, I don't want it to automatically add whatever it wants, I just want to drag or pin shortcuts there like you could in previous versions.

The more I use the OS the more restrictive it feels, you can't even tidy up the all apps menu, it doesn't let you move or delete shortcuts, even for 3rd party "apps".

Because that's supposed to be "all" apps, desktop and start are supposed to be your personalized selection, sort of like win 8. Sounds like you'll probably just want a start menu replacement.

Yeah if you have multiple monitors hooked up it might only display stuff on one monitor during install, I think I noticed that when installing a preview--showed up on my third monitor which I was using for my PS4 at the time

Tried using the download people suggested and it seemed to be going okay but I got blank screened / no signal by my monitor when I wasn't looking in the conversion process. Went on for 5+ minutes so figured something went wrong and had to restart and it reverted to 8.1. Guess I'll just wait for a bit.

That I don't know. I only had one drive when I pulled that trigger and I'm not done yet either. If it's just files and data then maybe unplug it.

I'm going to do a full backup of everything before I trust a day 0 installer with my stuff on my gaming rig.

It's not a second drive, it's a second partition.

For some reason every time i boot up my PC and everything loads i get a "this driver cant release to failure". Doesn't tell me what driver and everything seems to be working fine (sound, network, video etc).

Maybe i need to just do a clean install. From what i googled it seems to be related to gigabyte drivers?

Got a problem where Geforce Experience is on a monitor which isn't working. Windows + Right to snap it over isn't working. Any ideas?

Edit: A restart fixed it.

It's weird, there used to be an option to customize that left side apparently. You can even still drag a shortcut onto the start button and it will say "pin to start menu", but nothing happens.

There's a period in the installation where a black screen displays for some time.

Let it sit and do its thing.

If you are using multiple displays, unhook them, and ensure that your lone display is hooked into your primary (top) GPU if you have SLI. Had the same problem.

Finished upgrading, took an hour.

Snappy as hell. And seems to fixed an issue with my computer fan

how can I disable onedrive shit?

So how do you get it to start downloading? I've got the little windows icon in my task bar saying "get Windows 10", but when I click it, it just thanks me for reserving.

Looks like I can't get it on my HP Stream 7 yet. Tells me to 'Check your pc before installing Windows 10 Insider Preview'. Not sure if there's a way around it.

Anybody using windows 10 with an nvidia card OLDER than 400 series? The official Windows 10 drivers don't support those. I didn't have time to mess around with it last night. But anybody have any luck with any particular driver using a card older than 400 series? I have a GT 220 in my old HTPC.

I'm using a Geforce 7800 GT. Windows 10 installed a generic driver which had a low max screen resolution , so i had to get the windows 7 driver from the nvidia website and everything now works fine.

Black screen or no signal at all? I understand a black screen but not transmitting a signal at all to the point my monitor turns itself off would be weird.

Black screen. It's quite an uncomfortable period.

If no signal, then I would blame AMD as I always had that problem.

So if the error i am getting is my motherboard which is a (Z97-D3H) should i go download all windows 10 drivers for it off the gigabyte website? or do a clean install and then see if i keep getting the error.

What's the error?

Post a screenshot.

If you're lazy, hold the Windows Key and press Print Screen. Look at your pictures folder.

Installing! So far so good... Keeping all files and junk for now, will do a reset later (which I hope won't roll me back to my W7 OEM install?).

How to force the update:

1. Go into "C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download" and delete everything in that folder, but not the folder itself.

2. Now, run a command prompt as an administrator. Type in "wuauclt.exe /updatenow" with no quotes.

3. Wait a minute, and watch the folder you just emptied. It should start to have files show up.

4. Go to your Control Panel > Windows Update and your Windows 10 should start downloading. Once that is completed, you will be prompted to begin the installation process*

*may not work in territories where W10 is not released

Hope that helps

This did the trick for my desktop, thanks.

Reboot didn't change anything.

I only have 1 monitor, currently plugged into a DVI port (the computer has two of those and two hdmi), so maybe it's trying to use those other ones even though they're empty?
Eh. I think i'll try again tomorrow.

Your computer can't go back to Windows 7/8.1 after one month or if you decide to delete the previous Windows installation using the command cleanmgr.

Reset should blow away everything.

Tried the force update on my desktop and the screen went black and my mouse pointer kept resetting to the middle of the screen. Really weird. Ctrl-alt-del didn't do anything either, had to turn off at the mains

Ok. So "keep nothing" should be fine for me then? It won't wipe my second (non-system) partition, right?

I did a reset after and during that it asked if I wanted to wipe all drives or just the one with Windows on it. So assume it would be the same here, but I'm not 100% on that.

I just get a popup error when i start my PC (once it boots to desktop) saying "this driver cant release to failure" doesn't say what program or driver but according to google it's a gigabyte driver i just don't know it's actual motherboard driver that's doing it or the gigabyte app center.

Starting to think it's the app center because everything seems to be working perfectly fine. EDIT- Yeah, tried to run gigabyte app center and it gave me the error. I'll just uninstall it, i never needed it installed to begin.

Well, it didn't crash overnight so that's a good sign, also made an iso in case I want to fresh install, I have an ssd which I might use for that. Otherwise aside from that one video driver crapout last night, smooth sailing...

Now to remove all the old files and crap, hoobooy do they take up space.

Hmm so my W10 isn't activated. I did a normal upgrade. Anyone else have this problem?

I did a upgrade and a reset after that, my W10 isn't activated either. And when I try to activate it manually it gives an error and tells me to try again later. I can see both my old W7 key (or the last digits of it) and the new W10 key though, I guess I'll just wait and see.
