Windows 10 Troubleshooting Thread

This is like five UI toolkits grafted together to form some Frankenstein's monster of an operating system. It kind of gets on my nerves after a while because the context actions available can differ dramatically.

Like for instance you can't do shit with a metro app in a context menu. Unlike a regular executable which you can do a whole heap of useful stuff.

Then some context shit slides, some shit fades, some shit just pops in. Like MAKE UP YOUR GOD DAMN MIND.

If you're getting the 80240020 error message and can't upgrade, this is from a Microsoft Community guide:

How to resolve error 80240020
1. Browse to "C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download" and delete the contents of the folder.
2. Press Windows key + X > Click Command Prompt (Admin) then type "wuauclt.exe /updatenow".
Hit Enter
3. Open Control Panel > Windows Update and Windows 10 should begin downloading..
From Microsoft:
"This is an expected error message if the upgrade requires customer user action. For example, the message may be present if one or more applications or disk utilities that need to be uninstalled before upgrading. PCs seeing this error message will get instructions on how to fix this when they perform the upgrade. We recommend waiting until your PC receives a notification to upgrade and then following the instructions provided."

My Windows 10 app says I'm compatible though. I guess there's some sort of problem with it not displaying all the compatibility issues.

anyone else having difficulty activating windows and acquiring licenses for apps from the store?

I was having issues, yeah. Activation wasn't working for the longest time, and then it suddenly happened automatically. This was right after I had rebooted to let a security update get installed. I don't know if that has anything to do with it, but have you done that?

The "Groove Music" branding for the music app is stupid.

In the start menu, you cannot rename a pinned app--regardless of whether it's a Windows Store App or a conventional desktop app. Windows Store Apps can't be renamed at all. Desktop apps can, but it's convoluted. You need to right-click, open file location (which opens File Explorer to the buried start menu path on your hard drive) where you can rename it.

In addition, is "Open File Location" even a label that makes sense. The location being opened is not the location of the application; it's the location of the start menu shortcut to the application. For example, pin a folder to the Start Menu. Right click the folder, click "Open File Location". Wouldn't you imagine what opens would be the folder? Nope.

Why can you pin a folder to Start, but not a file? Note: You can pin a file to start if you open File Explorer, create a shortcut to the file, then open the start menu, open file location of any app, then move the shortcut to the file into that location so it shows up in All Apps, then right click that shortcut, then click pin to start (creating a shortcut to a shortcut).

What do you mean "updated key"? Mine is the "core" one (since I updated from 7 Home Premium, I guess) listed here.

I'm talking about a new serial key that replaces the Windows 7/8 key that's compatible with Windows 10 installations. That way if I wanted to do a fresh install of Windows 10 on a computer with a new motherboard I could simply enter the key...

So I finished the upgrade, backed up necessary files, and chose the full reset with wipe. This is supposedly the new way to do a wipe.

4 hours later, I'm stuck on the "Resetting this PC 99%"

Everything I read says to let it continue; one guy wrote that he left it on overnight. Bad news is that I didn't get the key so I can't just wipe again and use the ISO. Ugh. Suggestions?
I'm currently at this point on my Surface 3 one and half hours in.

Quick question.

How do get rid of the title bars that arrange the pinned apps in groups at the Start menu? Even if I leave them unnamed, they're still there.

This is a pain in the arse. One method is by using a Xbox 360, which doesn't work for me due to some random error and there maybe some other ways to do it but I am not sure.

Ugh, all I really want is the gamertag but it can wait for now until all the release issues settle.

Hm, ok. Yeah, I don't really know how you get such a key...?

Things are going well

Tried the fix on Reddit to no avail where you delete the files in that download folder and run the command prompt thing twice. 8.1 was a much easier update through the Store.

Did you try the official tool released by MS? One of my four systems had that issue. Used the tool and clicked upgrade now. Done.

Not only still there, but keyboard navigation goes to the first label by default (because renaming a group label is apparently as common a task as launching a program), so it's an extra keypress to get to your apps.

yup, already downloaded all updates

Interesting issue... I've hit a "device limit" after installing Windows 10 on my tablet. I have two devices - my PC and my tablet. As a result, unless I delete my PC (the first device) from my profile, which will prevent me using the Windows store on it, I can't use any apps on my tablet.

O_O

I'm still waiting for W10 to hit my PC. Is there something you're supposed to do before MS will send the update to you? I updated my graphics card (GTX 560 Ti) and installed all my optional updates.

I am at my wits end here. I've been trying to get this p.o.s. OS to work all day. But I cannot for the life of me, get the Settings App, Cortana, or Edge to work.

I am already missing Windows 8.1 (never thought I would say that), but I can't even roll back to it, because they tied the roll back to an app that I can't even use.

Thank you Microsoft for the worst upgrade experience I have ever experienced in all my years of handling computers.

doesnt the media creation tool (if you're gonna upgrade) do exactly the same thing waiting in line does?

there's no reason to wait guys, if you wanna do it now
Yea doing this now.

Nobody got time to wait.

Is there a way to get Cortana to change her voice to the US version? The one that actually sounds like the videogame character.
I haven't heard U.K. cortana but U.K. AI voices are always fucking disgusting.

I set both Siri and Google Now to the US. It's worth the drop in comprehension.

Didn't wait for the update and decided to force the install via the link in the OP. On a SSD this was relatively fast (less than 30 minutes) and it was a clean install too.

Just configured Edge and it's alright, but I'm really digging the aesthetic of everything else right now.

Seems a few of us are having an issue and i already see someone on Feedback submitted the problem.

Try making a new User Account and see if they work under the new user.

ok I'm downloading the upgrade onto a usb using the official tool as we speak

I have already upgraded to 10 from 7 so I'm hoping I can do another install or clean install as my current Windows 10 is absolutely fucked.

If it all goes tits up Microsoft should be calling me tomorrow :/

I got that same email, and I only have one Windows 10 device lol.

I'm up and running with my upgrade from 8.1 Pro, no issues so far. Tested out some games without major problems. Might have loss a bit of performance on Witcher 3 though, not quite positive. OS is pretty slick aesthetically.

You can't do that.

You would have to install on the new motherboard, skip CD key entry because we only have generic keys, and then ring microsoft.

It has always been against EULA to transfer licenses to new motherboards, but they may still allow you to. You would probably have to specify the microsoft account the specific windows 10 install is linked to.

So after doing the initial in place upgrade, if you wanted to clean install via bootable ISO media (USB/DVD) and you deleted all partitions - effectively starting from a clean slate - will it request a product key and if so how would I obtain it?

Skip the CD key step, if you have already activated a windows 10 install on this hardware then a clean install will automatically activate without a CD key.

Possible Bug, other users report this works for them:
In Windows 7, there's a few-pixel barrier to the right of your clock, segmented off If you move your mouse over it, you discover it's a button. If you click that button, you find it's "minimize all / show desktop". I can't remember whether or not it existed in Windows 8, because of the hot corners stuff. In Windows 10, there are no hot corners, but the space is still there... but it doesn't do anything. So you can't get your clock flush to the right of the screen. Not saying the problem is having a few pixels padding, the problem is that there's a line segmenting off these few pixels and no corresponding line on the left side of the clock.

Yeah just chiming in and saying this button works just fine for me as well.

Also, just FYI the button was there and operational on Win 8, but as you mentioned the difference between that button and hot corner fuckery was mere pixels.

The upgrade process worked flawlessly for me. However (due to my OCD nature) I did a clean install after messing around with it for a bit. That process worked fine too.

Try this (scroll all the way to the end of the article)

You mean the little space that's still there? You can't.
Exactly. That's plain stupid.

There is absolutely no reason for them to be there if you don't want to group your pinned apps.

Same here mate. What a fuck up. Can't believe they tied the settings to reset your OS to a fucking app and not in windows explorer

So you just boot from USB/DVD, format everything and it installs without asking you for a key?

After I messed around post upgrade I downloaded the ISO and burned it to a DVD. Then I rebooted to the DVD and started the install process choosing to format the partition and do a clean install.

During setup I just skipped the parts that asked for a CD key.

Things are working just fine.

So I've done a clean install but I noticed I only had half my SSD space, checking the folders I saw that the install took the entirety of previous PC and put it inside the folder of Windows.old

Anyway to get rid of it? I tried manually deleting it but it said I needed permission from SYSTEM.

Not in a hurry to upgrade, but I noticed the "Get W10" icon has disappeared from my taskbar. Is this normal? Windows Update still says my copy of W10 is reserved.
