Windows 10 Troubleshooting Thread

My PC has been trying to Restart and Roll back for the last 2.5-3 hours now.
It's been on this screen the entire time.

It's taking way to damn long to roll back.

Perhaps this has already been pointed out but just a warning for anybody thinking of resetting their 10 install. I got the update on my Surface 3 and it activated fine. It now refuses to do so after the reset.

I keep getting the blue screen of death saying internal power error everytime I sign in. I was able to get to the desktop once but hardly anything worked. Search, start menu, even settings menu were all down. Any fixes? Or should I do a clean install, and if so, how do I do that?

I used the media creation tool to create a bootable USB drive, but when I try to run setup it says to insert the 64-bit disc. I coulda sworn I chose x64...

OK, this is really getting to me. What a boneheaded design decision. Literally the only way to tell which window has focus is to note which program in the taskbar has the dark gray color (as opposed to the black):

I can barely fucking see a difference in those colors!

What happened to different colors on the title bars to indicate active vs. inactive windows?

Go to personalization-> colors and under the pallete, choose to show color on taskbar, etc

Then choose a color

Some colors will have a more notable difference than others :)

Oh geez. Sounds scary.

Okay, flash video choppiness fixed.

Turns out my Asus Xonar DS soundcard has some issue with Windows 10 and beta drivers fixed it. Yay.

Smooth OS transition and no other hiccups yet. Minus the two random reboots without any warnings stemming from updates.

I've tried that, and it really doesn't make much of a difference. The focused window color is still way too close to the unfocused color, regardless of which accent color you choose. And besides, it's still way easier to tell at a glance which window is active when the entire title bar is a different color.

Eh. Mine never activated before I did the reset, but some time after I had done it the activation went through. Probably just the activation servers being a bit wonky.

Ok I narrowed down the File Explorer crashing issue.

When I set File Explorer to open directly to Quick Access, it closes within 3 seconds.

However, when I set File Explorer to open to This PC, everything is OK.

Clicking on Quick Access will guarantee a crash.

Anyone know of any possible screw ups if I intend to revert back to 7?

I can't imagine everything getting back tidy widy.

Has anybody with the "trial period expired" bug managed to fix it? I have it for Edge and Feedback only it seems. I also can't sign into the store.

I think both have something to do with this device limit thing (that I haven't hit, unless the limit is 1).

Anyone had any major problems with 7zip?

I think it's causing my security settings to go on the fritz and locking me out of copying files to the Program Files folder and a few others.

Really strange issue that locks me out of editing admin permissions. Took me two hours to fix it. I reinstalled 7zip, used it once, then noticed the problem was back.

Real pain in the ass.

Still no update, control panel still says win 10 will download when notified

No, the notifier only appears when the computer is ready to restart to upgrade.

Poorly designed.

I use 7-zip as well. Hm.

Maybe that's the issue?

Is there a way to force the update? I've clicked check Windows Update. I've restarted multiple times. I'm in Texas.

My "$Windows.~WS" folder has completely downloaded, but i'm not getting the update to trigger?

Use the media creation tool (the link has been posted like five times per page). Contrary to what its name suggests, it's not just for creating bootable media, you can also just use it to upgrade right away. No waiting for Windows Update necessary.

Where can I get more information about errors that prevent installs?

0xC1900101 - 0x20004
The installation failed in SAFE_OS phase with an error during INSTALL_RECOVERY_ENVIRONMENT operation

I received that one.

This is the shitties update experience I've had with Windows.

Problem is, it ends with the

"Somethng happened" error

So far this is starting up WAAAAAY slower than 8.1 did.

Wait for it to settle with finish installing and setting up stuff?

Slower than 7 too.

No it's not.

Guys,

I keep seeing people ask about triggering the update or not getting it pushed etc etc. This tool has been posted many times but I think either people aren't reading the thread or not understanding what to do. The above article will walk you thru it. It is literally download and click start.
Tried highlighting what's bolded. It's pretty pathetic tbh.

So what exactly happens If I click schedule for later on the installation menu?

Does it simply postpone it?

I'm not going to upgrade right now because it's storming where I live and my electricity seems to always go out during storms.

I'm trying to get someone's Windows 7 laptop up to date for the Windows 10 install, and these .NET updates are always such a fucking chore.

Hm, my laptop (~2 GHz dual core Sandy Bridge, Samsung 850 EVO 500 GB, 6 GB of RAM) is 21% after 4 hours. That doesn't seem right. Hopefully it works.

Well I'd like to go back to 8.1 now, this has been disastrous. I'd imagine problems with older hardware, but my laptop is about 3 months old.

These sticky corners are really pissing me off. The red lines represent brick walls that no mouse can move through when moving between monitors:

Has anyone else tried creating a bootable USB drive with the tool and have it work? Can't do the upgrade since I get "something happened"

Pretty sure that was like that on Windows 8 also. Mine would always grab the corners.
