Windows 10 Troubleshooting Thread

you disabled it to get the steam overlay to work in BPM or you had previously disabled it and now enabled it to do Xbox recording on Steam?

I went to the Xbox app and I have no idea what I'm doing lol

I pressed the Guide button and that Game Bar thing popped up. I opened that up and clicked on Settings, then I just disabled it from there. I restarted/signed out and then BPM worked like usual.

I think you can also open the Xbox App, click on Settings > Game DVR and just disable it entirely.

Sorry for the bump, hoping to still get some help with this issue.

If you have that Win 10 Media Creation Tool you can use it to make an ISO and write it to a DVD and then format your system and boot from the DVD and Install Win 10 I believe.

Do not take my word for it though as it's late and I'm not entirely sure.

Oh nice... I wish there was a way to use both (not that I know if I would even use the Game Bar thing at this point)

Trying to upgrade my PC now and the media creation tool is forcing Dutch on me even though I downloaded it from the US site, plus my current OS is in English and I want to keep it that way. Anyone know a way around this?

It looks like you can change the hotkeys in the Xbox App. Just remove the guide button and use keyboard shortcuts instead. I don't know if this will work, but it's worth a try.

There are like a billion people trying to download this huge, massively complex piece of free software today.

Hmm, wonder if MS knew this so they could've prepped for it so people who updated to the free software from paid software running their expensive hardware running into issues could contact them to get their machines up and running. I hope people who rely on their machines more than me don't have to go through this.

Just failed on my hdd too. Only thing I can suspect now is that something is up with my mobo. Getting memory management and irql bsod errors.

:(

Dang, everything upgraded in like 30 minutes once the update was downloaded. Posting from chrome on 10 - no issues for me!

I don't see a way to remove the guide button the only shortcuts listed were the keyboard ones.. I think that guide button does all those things the shortcuts do? I just disabled DVR recording of games and now BPM works as usual..

Will probably look into it this weekend

So, I installed W10 on my Tablet yesterday to test the waters before installing it on my Desktop and everything runs fine except one thing

For some reason the app store doesn't work and looks like this

KRmodXW.png

I googled the problem but couldn't really find an answer.

Has anyone a clue whats going on there?

Ok, so I upgraded my desktop to Windows without incident but trying to do the same on my Asus tablet keeps resulting in errors. It gets up to the "Creating Windows 10 Media" part & then I get this:

tHeRLFI.jpg

The hell am I doing wrong? (T100, 32-bit, 32GB)

"Preparing for installation" is taking a really long time. Only about 1/3 done right now. I'm assuming this is because I never reset my windows so I have like a million things installed and it has to check them all out.

Is it possible to replace the tile icons? The shortcuts look ugly compared to the colored ones from the app.

I hope so. I made a tile for the Battle.net launcher and it just has the classic bnet launcher icon smack bang in the middle of the tile. I'd like to make a custom image that fills that tile.

if it's the "Making sure you're ready to install thing" see if Windows Defender has real-time scanning turned on. Mine was sitting at that part for what felt like too long and I turned off real-time scanning and it was over 2 minutes later..

My Surface 3 is up and running other than the Xbox app's refusal to sign in. My laptop is also working now but Cortana is disabled due to "company policy" or something, not at the computer now to check, but it's a personal computer so not sure what that's about.

Tried contacting their customer support and yeah good luck on that. Had to schedule a call on Saturday at 930pm which was their earliest. This is insanity. No number to get through to them posted? Gtfo. Worst company ever.

So frustrated right now it's unreal, especially that it's my primary gaming device.

There are probably 50 million people trying to install Windows 10 right now, if you think any company on Earth can field that many tech support calls at once I'm not sure what to tell you. I'm amazed you could even schedule a call within the next few days. Everyone at MS is probably on quadruple-shifts and mandatory overtime right now from Nadella down to the tech support grunts working in the phone center coal mines.

You'll probably have more luck getting help asking GAF or posting on Reddit anyways.

Netflix gives me this error W8157-887A0001

And Hulu gives me PB4-887A001

Just the Windows apps, runs fine in browser.
Use DDU to remove AMD drivers.
Use this tool to Hide AMD driver updates:
Install 15.7.1 Drivers

If it's a driver issue this will definitely sort you out -- I have a sneaking suspicion it's not driver related. Driver related errors usually cite HDCP as a fault.

Hi Gaf.

I'm googling but can't find any help anywhere.

Windows 10 Home 32bit can install. I've successfully done it....but I don't want it, I have 16GB ram and a 4GB GPU.

So...

Windows 10 Home and Pro 64bit crash after the Getting Ready part and blue screen and wont ever boot to windows.

Ive had it say System Service Exception and KMOD exception.

I have no idea what these mean.

One said run a memtest but memtest shows everything has fine.

I'm at a loss here.

I'm currently downloading Windows 10 Pro N Both

*Crosses Fingers.*

Downloaded the tool, got up to the update part.
WHzRtKh.png

It's hanging here going on 20 minutes at least. Does it have anything to do with my Windows 7 laptop not having one of those "Get Windows 10" buttons in the tray?

And is a blank flash drive completely necessary for the ISO? I'v got some important stuff on it and it's taking too long to upload somewhere safe. Can I move them onto the laptop and move them back on the ISO is complete?

Which is why they tried the phased approach, but stupidly left ways for people to install anyway. Then people would have bitched they couldn't upgrade day 1 though, so it was really no-win.

For your particular problem though, it is sounding more than Win 10 being at fault. Have you taken the usual steps of seeing if there's an updated BIOS for your motherboard, load BIOS defaults, running memtest then testing how it performs with one memory stick at a time and finally, removing your graphics card? Just to get an idea of where the issue is at.

Same for you as well. BIOS update, restore BIOS defaults (I've heard issues with RAM in XMP mode on some BIOS versions) check each stick of RAM individually, remove graphics card. Usual steps I take to see what the hell is wrong. If 32 bit works, something isn't right when it tries to address the extra memory I feel.

"Making Sure You're Ready to Install" sure is taking its time.

After that it'd be fast right? No more waiting long?

Didn't help. And it doesn't seem to be just slow but now stuck here.
Trying to cancel doesn't cancel and setup from disc won't launch now that windows update is going for it. RIP.

Edit: Uhhh... It's restarting... okay...
Edit 2: It started redownloading so I killed it there and I'm trying from disc.

That part took almost an hour for me. No idea what it actually does, but it likely isn't stuck.

Only reason I think it's a driver issue is that as soon as I disabled my video drivers thr Netflix app worked fine. Only without audio because that's tied into my video drivers (HDMI)

The OneDrive functionality in Windows 10 kinda sucks. How can I set files to be online only? In Windows 8.1 I could right click the file to toggle it between Online Only and Offline, but here I can't seem to do that.

That takes super long, should be fine. Can't be certain about the second question although if you do the option of it keeping all your files it should be totally fine.

This whole download process is such a shit show when it could've been so easy (or so I think).
Windows Update downloading the 6GB Win10 in the background without telling you is stupid to begin with.
The media creation tool apparently doesn't support pause and resume, heck it even breaks if you cancel the download process and you manually have to delete files to restart it (or the tool won't launch).
Why not provide a torrent or simply a regular download of the install files... v_v"

Windows 10 has been pretty shittacular for me so far on my laptop.

- Absurdly long startup time, have to wait on a blank screen for a couple of minutes after turning it on.
- Laptop no longer wakes up from having the lid closed, have to restart the laptop.
- Slowdown on Chrome and certain Programs

Really disappointed so far might give it a complete clean install and see if that helps.

Is it possible to replace the tile icons? The shortcuts look ugly compared to the colored ones from the app.

You can rename and change the icon, but I don't think you can resize the icons within the blue boxes:

Also, thank god, you can customize your All Apps menu by messing around with the shortcuts and folder structure in here:

C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

Can't get rid of those pesky universal apps, though.

I was at that spot and turned off instant scan on windows defender and it continued like 2 mins later..

Didn't help. And it doesn't seem to be just slow but now stuck here.

sorry about that I wasn't sure where in the process you were (there are so many things it says it's kind of ridiculous)

Microsoft gonna Microsoft

I notice the longer start up time but haven't notied any slowdown in Chrome.. regarding the laptop maybe settings got reset have you looked at the power savings settings in the control panel?

I'm really liking it. My only complaints to this point are aesthetic choices.

I wish title bars were uniform with the taskbar/start menu. The white just doesn't work for me.

The account profile picture on the start menu is a compressed mess. Let me adjust its size or at least toggle it off.

I'd like a slider to adjust transparency. The transparency toggled on isn't much different than toggled off.

The notifications area has one less icon on the bottom row than the top.

There's other things, but these were off the top of my head. Nitpicks aside, it's been a pleasant experience.

I bet there's one buried somewhere. There's this trick for choosing a more specific color:

Go to Run > "type rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL desk.cpl,Advanced,@Advanced" (no quotes)

source

The above source will also tell you how to change your title bar color to match your taskbar color, but it's sort of hacky.

Yeah, hopefully they'll release more customization options in the future.

Thanks for this. I'll check it out.

Hmm, installed Windows 10, no problems. Though when opening the store, when I click on lets say the minecraft thingie, the store just closes instantly. It's weird. Anyone know how to solve this?

Just installed, problem I'm having is Windows 10 won't let me change my screen resolution. It seems to be because it can't recognize my monitor? Anyone know anything about this?

Works fine, have no real objections. A few minor non-critical bugs and some ugly design choices here and there, but other than that it's snappy and pretty neat. The only downside for me is that my scanning software stopped working, can't even get it to run in compatibility mode. Gonna try some heavy gaming tonight and see if it's stable.

Yeah had this issue as well. Redownload and install drivers for your graphics card.

IMPORTANT NOTE IF YOU ARE SEEING THIS

DO NOT go and wipe your download folder. While that may work for some people, it doesn't work for everyone, as the upgrade process is complex with a ton of different phases and multiple reasons why it may or may not work.

You'll likely end up causing more problems than you solve.

INSTEAD

Follow the instructions here:

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...0/d695e827-9774-4e10-8972-df8d51a7bb51?auth=1

By doing this, not only are you avoiding re-downloading the entire thing with the Media Creation Tool, but you are also avoiding a lot of potential headaches.

The error code does not mean that there was a problem with the download. It simply means that you weren't eligible to install it yet.

Thinks are actually going really well! Just been super busy is all :-)

Thanks so much for this! I did what the link said this morning and I was on W10 within the hour, completely painless! It surprised me just how little went wrong - the only thing that broke was Cubase 7 losing my elicenser, but that was fairly easily fixed. If you want to update now, use this method!

Does it recognize your graphics card yet? Check device manager (use Windows+X shortcut).

I had to restart a couple times before it showed my graphics card driver as being installed.

I installed windows twice, one upgrade from 8.1 and another clean. In both cases, Windows installed a generic video driver that replaced my nvidia one.

Download the proper driver from your card and restart Windows.

What do you mean?

I've never updated my bios to start with.

I'll restore the defaults regardless.

And I'll remove ram and GPU as I go.

Makes no sense as to why completely fine ram and GPU would effect it :S

Thank you. I'll try this out tomorrow. Not a fan of hacky, but I imagine aesthetic improvements are pretty low on Microsoft's priority list, so who knows when or if any of these will ever happen. Workarounds it is.
