Windows 10 Troubleshooting Thread

Windows 10 has been pretty shittacular for me so far on my laptop.

- Absurdly long startup time, have to wait on a blank screen for a couple of minutes after turning it on.

Really disappointed so far might give it a complete clean install and see if that helps.

When I started using the preview a few months back I had this for 3-4 boots then it vastly improved. I think it is doing Windows updates/Drivers installs but has no display to tell you what it is doing. I've also had it do this then restart and boot quickly. I thought it was quirk with the preview but maybe it is an issue with the retail release as well.

See how it goes after a few days.

So I just updated to Windows 10, but in the Xbox app I don't see a "Connect" option to allow streaming?

It goes straight from Store to Settings with nothing in-between.

Is there a way around this?

EDIT: Nevermind, think I just needed to update the app.

How do i group tabs on edge?

give em a drink or have em smoke a joint to take the edge off

I wish I could make my taskbar more white than black. Medium dark grey is the lightest it seems to go (aside from dumb yellow).

I don't use dark theme GAF and I don't want this, dagnabbit

edit: Whooaaaaa "New Desktop" just blew my mind. That's a cool feature.

What do you mean?

I've never updated my bios to start with.

I'll restore the defaults regardless.

And I'll remove ram and GPU as I go.

Makes no sense as to why completely fine ram and GPU would effect it :S

What I mean is try updating your BIOS, not an update might have killed it. If your motherboard manufacturer has updated the BIOS, it may increase compatbility with Windows 10. I know my motherboard had a shitfit with Windows 8 until I updated it.

Don't know if you got it yet but I had to reboot my Xbox and include it in network sharing on my PC.

You can choose any color you want (assuming you have "Show color on Start, taskbar, and action center" checked).

Go to Run > "type rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL desk.cpl,Advanced,@Advanced" (no quotes)

Got the Office problem solved, but still stuck with some bizarre bugs like not be able to shut down the PC regularly. Microsoft needs to make an update pretty soonish.

Installed 2 brand new Intel 730 Series SSD's last night and then whacked my Windows 7 retail install on that new SSD Raid. Then updated to Windows 10 - didn't take very long but there were a few hiccups along the way. Loving Windows 10 though, made a bunch of adjustments to the task bar and start menu to return it to a much similar to Windows 7 layout. Got rid of the hideous glances/icons on the right of the start menu and also made the task bar small, non-combine and icon and name... just like XP... those were the days. Overall though, love the new darker aesthetic... EXCEPT for in apps/programs...

succesfully changed my top bar colors with the guide that's been posted

no more blindness causing whiteness
^^ I'm doing that the moment I get home.

I felt like the over abundance of white was so jarring, can't wait to get darker headers back.

My SLI (980's) are working great too. Well I only booted up Minecraft Windows 10 edition to give it a go but that was smooth as shit (compared to normal Minecraft in java).

I re-added all my steam libraries so I'm going to give a few games a go tonight, maybe even try to see how much more of a hit Arkham Knight took because of the upgrade.

I wonder how this operating system will pan out over time, I never really liked Windows 8 except for the boot times. My new boot time with Windows 10 on my new SSD's is about 11 seconds so pretty amazed by that.

Anyone know how to have the whole system's language? I can change it for each individual account but not for the lock screen, login menu etc.

Used the ISO tool(MediaCreationToolx64.exe) to do an instant upgrade on Win8.0, selected to do a clean install directly from the update tool in win8. Everything was painless and very fast approx 10-15min(SSD 840evo, and a 1GB internet connection)

looks like i can even defer updates(Home edition) but maybe the button is defective.

My only complaint so far is that the trashcan is f**** ugly

Whenever I try to download Windows 10 to media or to upgrade the PC I get an error, usually the "Something happened" error.

Is there a common cause for this? Any ways around it?

Could I download the ISO and install it manually somehow?

Setting my location under Region/Languages to the United States fixed it for me.

I bet there's one buried somewhere. There's this trick for choosing a more specific color:

Go to Run > "type rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL desk.cpl,Advanced,@Advanced" (no quotes)

source

The above source will also tell you how to change your title bar color to match your taskbar color, but it's sort of hacky.

Oh thank you. While I'll try to get used to the title bars I was sorely missing the more detailed color remixer. Saturation and brightness doesn't work anymore (which is bad because I like my colors muted) but at least hue still does.

Well MS you had your chance. 5 fucking attempts, numerous restarts and the same shit keeps happening. Once I get to the point it actually starts installing after you click the agreement an error comes up saying "modem host setup has stopped working and the installer crashes.

After some thought I decided to join in the fun. Installed over my W8 partition, had to activate it, but for the most part everything went ok. Used the mediatool to upgrade, then usb drive to clean install.

Haven't run into any major problems, but still getting used to everything. Now just waiting to go back to W7 and write down all the extensions and apps I was using to get things back to normal as possible. Hoping as I use it more annoyances don't start to pile on.

My W7 partition was getting a bit long in the tooth so I was going to have to do a clean install soon any ways. This alone makes any headaches more tolerable.

Nope, my connection went out for 20secs or sth, Windows media tool stopped downloading and wouldn't resume within 10min. Exited setup, leaves the same 2GB temp file and won't start unless I delete it. I'm done with Win10 for now :-)

My upgrade went smooth from windows 7 64bit, used the tool from the ms website the other day, I kept all files, everythings now faster and better, highly recommend using the tool instead of waiting for the winodws update.

I don't see how you can choose white (or even light grey or anything close). It doesn't matter if I turn the saturation all the way down, brightness all the way up... it still stays dark grey.

Well I solved my video driver problem. Nearly ended up ruining my computer.

Removing the old drivers and installing the win 10 ones didn't do shit. So I was at one point completely fucked with no drivers. Turns oyt my laptop has lesser known drivers. Got lucky found one from last year.

Everything that worked before still works and to boot so do Hulu and Netflux go figure.

I see dreamspark has windows 10 now but it has loadss of editions

Education edition
Multiple edition
Symbols edition

:S guessing I should get the education edition ?? (Just for a backup in case I need it)

I've been having a few problems on my SP3. I have it installed and everything.

This was all without my SP3 keyboard, so it was with touch (In tablet mode, and not)
  • When I would open Chrome, nothing was selectable. Like it was frozen, but it wasn't. Restarting the PC fixed it.
  • Tablet mode Cortana wouldn't allow me to speak to it. It would just ignore me. Restarting the PC fixed it.
  • Edge doesn't have back and forward touch gestures.
  • Edge would crash when I tried to watch any videos that weren't on Youtube. Not sure if restarting fixed it because I went back to chrome after my restart.

That's it so far.

Upgraded last night from Windows 7. Basically, Windows 10 doesn't boot at all. Black screen, no cursor. If I hit F12 during Startup I can get a screen that says "It looks like Windows didn't load correctly."

Now I gotta find wherever the hell I put that Windows 7 disc.

Tried upgrding my Surface Pro 4 times. The Windows 10 thing downloads in the background each time, I start the installation... it goes to a black screen with a spinning circle and a progress bar...

And goes to a black screen, halts for HOURS, then when it restarts, it's still Windows 8.1 and has to REDOWNLOAD Windows 10.

What the fuck is going on?

Streaming from Xbox to PC is that available in 1080p? I have both my PC and Xbox wired to my router with a 70 to 80mb speed, I've seen people saying their streaming looks "perfect" but my quality doesn't even change from medium to high.

Oh god everything is white.

Also the taskbar has tiny little icons now. Do they think I have cyborg eyes?

so I've tried all the fixes I've seen on the web to do with the store and apps. This one seems to work for most people but isn't working for me.

C:>users>user_name>AppData>Local>Packages>Microsoft.WindowsStore_8wekyb3d8bbwe>Local cache. Delete all the files and folders in there

In the same WindowsStore folder in LocalState it has something about store entitlement? I'm running out of ideas.

Still waiting for the update to pop. Don't want to push it before it's asking - there may actually be a very reason that it hasn't been pushed out to me yet.

Hi everyone,

Got a question that's probably real simple to answer. My wife has a Japanese Lenovo laptop running JPN Windows 7 64-bit. She's already "reserved" her copy of JPN Windows 10 on the machine. That's all fine and dandy but she also has a JPN copy of Office 2010 on the laptop. She also has no idea where the product/activation/whatever key or discs are for it.

Can she download JPN Windows 10 and keep Office 2010 on there or will downloading Windows 10 basically mean she'd have to reinstall Office which, again, she's missing all the important stuff to do that :-/

The upgrade process should keep everything installed. But to be sure, you could use something like Magical Jellybean Keyfinder to find out the product key, so you can reinstall it if you need to.

You can choose a decently light gray for your accent color by setting the brightness slider all the way down. But the taskbar and start menu color will always be a darker shade of that color, because that's just how they have it programmed to work.

That's assuming you're using "show color on start, taskbar, and action center".

She won't have to reactivate any software. All that stuff carries over. If you really just want that key, there are easy ways to get it: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/product_cd_key_viewer.html

It didn't offer me the ability to import bookmarks into Edge when I first installed it, but now it gave the option for Chrome after I put it as my default browser.

Odd.
