Windows 10 Troubleshooting Thread

Installation went fine with the reddit trick but I need to zoom in 125%. DPI is already 100% and if I set the display to 100% everything is too small. Display size 125% is perfect but some apps are blurry.

Back in Win8.1 these settings were fine. I already upgraded drivers for Intel 5500 and Nvidia 840m.

Does somebody have a fix for this?

Should be getting my SP3 later today, and I plan on installing Win 10 first thing. Hopefully everything runs fine.

Anyone know if Visual Studio 2015, Unity 5, or Blender have any compatibility issues?

How does this upgrade work? Do I need to enter my serial key or something? If so I need to pray that I saved the box for the computer.

I was gonna wait for the damn installer to just drop the Windows 10 on me but I'm still waiting to be notified.

Is the media tool problem free?

I never had issues with skype before it would shut off just fine on Windows 8.1.

Were you using the Skype app or Skype for Desktop? The latter I've always had to shut it off from the taskbar in Win 7, 8, 8.1 and 10. Unless you were using an outdated version.

Oooookay. I'm working blind here and I have no idea what the narattor wants me to do.

Yeah I imagine you pretty much just need to fumble your way through the initial setup stuff. Try to just tab your way over to the Next button and hit Enter. The narrator is supposed to help in this somehow, I guess? The narrator should read what each button says as you hit tab or shift+tab (this goes back one button).

The heart of your problem is with the video drivers. You might also try switching your monitor to another port on your motherboard or plugging in a second monitor.

My biggest annoyance so far is Skype just won't shut off unless I kill the process in task manager. Anyone else not able to shutdown Skype normally? Other than that Windows 10 has been running like a dream nice and smooth.

Since Windows 7 actually. Skype will only budge to force, it's a constant pain in my sides.

Yeah, I thought that was just how Skype works.

All forms of closing just seem to minimise Skype. What you have to do is right click on the Skype icon on the taskbar and select "Quit". Then it closes properly.

I got desktop to show up. But now my programs open off-screen for some reason. Only one monitor appears in nvidia control panel.

So, er...

When I first installed it everything was fine, but after I've shut my PC down and turned it back on again task manager refuses to start. I get to it by right clicking the taskbar, but nothing happens for a few minutes and then it throws up this message:

Anyone else having this issue?

In CMD use sfc / scannow

The navigation bar in Edge is way too big. No reason for it to take up so much space on a desktop. Clearly seems to be designed for touch controls for tablets and laptops.

I have to say, I kind of liked the notification tab.. but it seems microsoft is using it to survey their customers.. google pays me to do this....

Ended up having to do a clean install (which was what I wanted to do anyway) for the update. Update failed every time with"system service exception." Windows inline upgrades as garbage as ever I see. Well done MS. I also lose my free license because the update failed. Woooooooooooooooooooo.

I skipped W8, so I can't compare this against that, but my old 2011 laptop starts up much faster now than it did with W7 (which may of course be partly because I reset the install so there's very little auto-start crap left). Everything in the OS feels smooth and snappy too. Yeah, things will take a second or two to open up when I first do it after a reboot, but that's HDDs for you. There's no choppiness or anything, everything is very smooth. With an SSD this laptop would just fly with this OS.

Haven't really encountered any bugs yet either, except for Store apps refusing to install (which is probably more of a server thing). The OS automatically installed all the drivers I needed without a single issue (sound, touchpad, integrated graphics, the latest Geforce driver, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc - it all just works).

So yeah, so far I'm really impressed.

So, I was running 8.1 Pro, I used the Media Creation Tool to first upgrade to Windows 10, then after that was successful I used it again to create a bootable USB. I then booted from the USB and did a clean install of Windows 10, but now my Windows 10 installation won't activate. According to everything I've read here and elsewhere, my clean install should have no issues activating since I performed an upgrade first.

Any ideas?

anyone want to share their start menu setup ?

also any ways to make the icons on the start bar slightly larger? they seem pretty small

Ah, same tablet as me then. I was able to update without issue using this tool from MS. Apart from very sluggish performance straight after updating (an Intel driver update fixed that), everything went fine. Maybe you can try updating that way.

How did you do the driver update? Mine isn't particularly sluggish, but I wouldn't mind having it up to date.

My HDD is filled up, though. Gotta clean some stuff, not sure what's still taking up so much space.

Not entirely the same but I updated my Surface 3, and it activated fine. Ran the refresh and when it booted up clean it refused to activate. I tried it multiple times over the period of maybe 3-4 hours last night. Turned it on this morning and it had activated. May just need to wait.

Run disc cleanup.

If I log into the Windows Store to get my Minecraft beta, is that going to merge my PC account with it? One thing I was very relieved at was the ability to keep local-only accounts, really don't want to give that up (even for Minecraft...)

Here is what Windows 10 looks like to me. I love how dark it is. I wish I could completely remove tiles but whatever it's cool to have the menu back.

Weird issue with OneDrive; any help would be greatly appreciated.

I upgraded my desktop to Windows 10 with no issues. The first time I tried to open the OneDrive folder on my computer (the system folder that appears in File Explorer), it asked which of my files on my computer I wanted to sync with OneDrive. I didn't want to sync any of this computer's files, so I unchecked all the boxes and clicked Okay. All the files and folders in the OneDrive folder immediately disappeared and were replaced by four random files from my computer. Thankfully, the online OneDrive is still intact, so my files are there.

So, anyone know what happened? How do I get my computer's OneDrive folder to sync with my online folder and restore everything to the computer OneDrive (without erasing the online OneDrive, which I'm terrified about doing)?

EDIT: Never mind, I think I figured it out. I'm an idiot. Carry on.

For fuck sake Microsoft.

I downloaded the windows 10 64bit version.

Installed it.

Run AMD 64bit driver and it tells me my system is 32bit.

I check and low and behold it's fucking 32bit.

What fucking year is it?

I sell laptops for a living and we havnt sold anything 32bit in fucking years.

Seriously.

Now I have to do this shit AGAIN!

I select UK english
Windows 10 Home
64bit.

I'm doing it again my god.

Microsoft Edge doesn't even have a Save As dialog box, it just saves into the Download folder automatically

You don't need that. I just did a clean install from a USB because I figured it was time since I've been upgrading from insider builds for months. When it asks for a key, just skip and keep skipping them till you get to the desktop. It will then activate automatically, no key required.
Did you use the Media Creation Tool from MS to make a bootable USB?

So I remember when Microsoft wanted to blend IE with Windows and there was a big stink made about it and antitrust this and that...

Edge loads so goddamn fast off anything in the OS. Did they finally do what they wanted?

Which app do I need to try streaming my XB1 to my win 10 machine?
The Xbox app. Unfortunately the streaming runs like shit for me, but then my comp is pretty old.

That combined with the 'can barely see' scroll icon are basically deal breakers. All the improvements, completely wasted because of two little minor things.

I have to say, the process was pretty smooth for me. I used the tool, did everything pretty much without issues. The nvidia stuff wasnt installing, so i rebooted and everything was there ready to go. Loving it. So glad that metro screen is gone.

Hmm have anyone else tried Rayman Legends under Windows 10? I played it on 1080P/60 fps before but now after the upgrade I got these strange stutter/freezes every couple of seconds. Using the latest nvidia drivers (353.62) with 2x670 SLI.

That has nothing to do with Windows 10 and everything to do with the latest stupid Skype update. For some reason they killed the modern Skype app and pushed everyone onto the desktop one (which got updated to never close), which makes no sense at all.
