Windows 10 Troubleshooting Thread

OK, I've updated now. I have a few questions.

1. Can I change the task bar search box text to stop it saying 'search the web and Windows' (I promise you Microsoft, I do understand what that box is for). I'm aware I can turn off the search box or make it an icon.

2. With my 1440p monitor I have 125% scaling on for text and such. Just like in Windows 8. Windows stuff is fine but Steam and Spotify and other such programs have blurry text and don't look too crash hot. Is there anything I can do?

In compatability settings you can set apps to ignore scaling. And yes it is incredibly annoying that Steam still refuses to have high DPI mode when gamers must be the most common Windows users with >1080p displays.

I reserved Win 10 when the windows 10 App popped up. Did a reformat on my computer about 2 hours ago and the Windows 10 app appeared and I had to reserve windows 10 again. But now the windows 10 app is gone, I've tried uninstalling the 2 windows update files and reinstalling them but nothing happens. I'm getting stressed out :/

You can just turn off the search bar. Then you just search from the start menu like always.

Can you still use Cortana that way? I like Cortana (in theory) but I search via the start menu.

Is Cortana better yet? In the preview, even the RTM preview, she was a joke next to Google Now.

Anyone know why I might still have DirectX 11.2 when I've upgraded to Windows 10? I installed the OS on launch night and have all the latest updates but running Dxdiag shows I have DirectX 11.2 and not 12 yet. Anyone know why this could be? I have an AMD Radeon HD 7520G if that helps. Is my graphics card not supported yet or something? I heard Direct X 12 is supposed to support the Radeon HD 7XXX series so don't particularly understand why I'm still running 11.2 instead of 12.

Doesn't help that DirectX can now only update via the Windows Update instead of just downloading the runtime installer as with DirectX 9. Any ideas guys?

I wish they'll quickly update the system and add more options to hide elements in tablet mode. Windows8 had it right, why did they change it ? I don't want to see the task bar on the start screen, nor menu buttons. Nor do I want to see the address bar or folder names in Edge. And give me back my quick link selection with large tiles. :/

Whats the best way to do a fresh install? Using the reset option in recovery? If so, should I choose remove everything or restore factory settings?

where can I find this compatability settings, in the Control Panel? setting the DPI more than 100% results in blurred text for me in apps :(

so, what does the rest of this message say? I said I don't want to use my location or something and the next screen is a big block of text you can't scroll

Do updates no longer require reboots?! I installed some post-upgrade updates and it didn't beg to restart.

The product key I got using the software recommended is not working and yet my 8.1 is activated. What do I do?

It told me my keys didn't work, then after a reboot it says Windows 10 is active. They might be having some issue with the validation server or something, but best I can tell I'm good to go despite it telling me there was an error with my key. Reboot and see if it says windows is active now.

Set the control panel DPI to what you want for windows (and all DPI compliant apps), then for specific misbehaving apps, right click the task bar item, right click the app name (just above pin/unpin from start), then go to properties, then Compatibility in the window that pops up, then check "disable DPI scaling". The window will be smaller and have smaller text, but it won't be blurry.

As a heads up, GIFCam royally screws up if you don't set this, and it's not obvious it's screwed up until after you record (the app looks fine, the recording is offset)

There's a big ol Privacy menu in Settings now, disabling Location is one of the options

Is anyone else unable to get launch options working for programs? (I.e putting extra text in the target box)

I used it to run stuff like Sim City 4 in 1080p in W7 but it doesn't seem to work now, adding stuff to the launch options in steam games doesn't seem to work either; it just stops the game from launching.

Well it won't let me continue. How do I go past that stage.

My current PC would get an upgrade to W10 Home - if I wanted to upgrade to Pro in the future, is this as simple as buying it, choosing 'Change Product Key' on this screen and inputting the Pro licence key:

(image from ArsTechnica) Or does Pro need a full reinstall?

Man, my gaming performance have tanked since I upgraded to windows 10 yesterday. Not sure what the problem is but getting massive screen tearing and huge fps drops in every game I have tried on Steam. Tried to disable SLI but that made no difference ; (

Side Note: If you couldn't get your shit to activate yesterday due to the server overload I had no problems activating this morning vs yesterday.

So now everything works again after I restarted the computer (rather than turn it off completely and turning it back on again.) I have no idea what the problem was, but it didn't want to do anything that required admin privileges. Whether the problem stays fixed or not is another issue entirely...

Worth pointing out that when this happened I couldn't even get into the "reset this PC" menu - whenever I clicked the option the settings menu hung and wouldn't go any further.

Windows 10 doesn't let me hide the libraries from the file explorer:

I also tried a few tricks I found online, including changing some registry keys. Nothing works. Can anyone help me, please?

Weird, my install completed and gave me a temp/invalid key, which method did you take? I just downloaded the windows 10 tool thing (not the upgrade from the task bar) and it never asked for a key until windows 10 was installed.

Hmmm I was having performance issues in Tembo but I assumed it was the game's fault (hadn't tried it yet on PC). Maybe the drivers will have to update. I didn't notice significant issues in the preview though. Then again, DS4 wasn't broken earlier in the preview either...

I don't know how to hide them, but library stuff won't hide thembecause those aren't libraries, those are your user folders. Speaking of, anyone know how to get File Explorer to open to My Computer? I remember having to use a weirdo trick to do this on Win 8 too.

Anyone know how to disable or change the login at start up?

It's annoying cos it uses my Live account ID and password, thing is I use a Password Manager; so I need to get my phone out and type out a huge password every time I boot up now =/

Dumb question: In light of this new clean install article from Ars, is the process of upgrading on top of 7/8 and then simply resetting the PC (Windows' clean install function) still valid?

It is a longer, more complex way of accomplishing the same thing as upgrading your 7/8/8.1 OS to W10 and then doing a reset within the W10 settings menu. Either one is no more "clean" than the other.

EDIT:

Change to a pin man.

If I log into the Windows Store to get my Minecraft beta, is that going to merge my local PC account with it? One thing I was very relieved at was the ability to keep local-only accounts, really don't want to give that up (even for Minecraft...)

Anyone have any idea/tried this?

Actually I just want to disable the "lock screen" thing before my password personally, can you do that? Infuriatingly, if you just start typing at that screen it eats the first few characters of your password. WHY. It wouldn't mind the lock screen at all, even on my desktop, if I could just type my password, hit enter and log in.

Anyone have any idea/tried this?

I know you can log into Xbox with a different account, I didn't try the store though...I should have, I'd like my minecraft account tied to my Xbox account just in case that matters in the future

I used the same tool thing except I choose to create an iso. So you choose to "upgrade this pc right now" option? Also, where you online throughout the process?

Settings > Your Account > Sign in with a local account instead

or

Settings > Sign-in options > Pin

I didn't deliberately disconnect. I didn't bother making an ISO, unsure if that's the kicker or if it's because I was on the tech preview before upgrading (I wouldn't think so--tech preview isnt' a valid key, if anything they should be more generous to "real" windows installs)

W10 screwed up my laptop click pad. Now when I triple finger tap, it brings up the Start menu instead of middle click. I tried messing with the registry (necessary to get 3fingerttap working for me when I first got the laptop) but couldn't get it back to how it was. Anybody?

tenforums is where you want to go for this kind of stuff. I think this is what you actually want: http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/6015-pc-folders-add-remove-windows-10-a.html

You should also play around with the two settings in the red box:

Notice how clean my Explorer is. This shit took HOURS.

I still have a recovery partition using 16 gigs from windows 8.1 that I think is useless now. I'm a bit hesitant to delete it and Bork my system

Some other poster(s) have complained about laptop touchpads and drivers. I'm guessing it's a driver and/or setting, and the forced driver updates keep resetting it.

make a win10 usb drive with this tool https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

my friend didnt have the win10 icon either he just updated his pc all the way and then upgraded using the usb drive in windows and his win10 activated. just make sure you choose the option to keep your files and apps the first time you upgrade to win10.

When putting in my password to log into the PC the background is temporarily the default Windows 10 background. Is there any way to change that? I've already changed my desktop background and lock screen backgrounds.

Through various problems of the Start Menu not responding, Cortana not working, every new app taking forever, my sound being broken (although fixed) and my trackpad turning to shit.

The one thing that does work well in Windows 10 is the recovery options. I'm safely back on Windows 7.

One of the things Im trying to do is change my language to US English to get the install tool to work

However I dont even have another language installed!

Anyone have a link to download US English? Apparently this fixes the "something happened" issue

I get M$ said the upgrades start on the 29th but have they said how long the rollout would be?

I ask because my upgrade icon just tells me "notify me when ready" and I want it to do it on its time so there is less a chance of a mess up Though, I want to know if I missed it or something

Were you using the Skype app or Skype for Desktop? The latter I've always had to shut it off from the taskbar in Win 7, 8, 8.1 and 10. Unless you were using an outdated version.

Desktop version. That's what I am using now and it's fully up to date as well.

They probably saw you write "M$" and put you at the back of the line.
