Windows 10 Troubleshooting Thread

I hate new multimedia permonance.
Since w10 I had a lot of problems with MKV playback, even disabling Media Fundation codecs and going with external codecs.
Never had any issue with 7, 8 or 8.1 :(
it lags on let in me to take control of time bar during first video minutes.
and if I do any click on the screen during that time it shows this way:

After few "seconds" it works fine:

but it's annoying and only happens with BDRip videos.
BDMux and BD m1080p mkv files load ok and fast but BDRip files are a pain in the ass. If I righ-click on the file even windows take some time searching properties.
Sad.

I suggest using VLC, Media Player Classic or Potplayer instead. WMP sucks.

So iv'e reformatted my PC 5 times today and now a 6:th time because of stupid windows problems.

The first two reformatted because the Windows 10 app disappeared

after the second I upgraded through the tool but win 10 felt sluggish

Downloaded the ISO and after reformatting I installed the wrong version so I had to download again

Now my PC locks up when I try to boot to the sub so I'm trying downloading the ISO again!

Ugh

Sorry if it's been posted and answered...

I can't get any of my domain-joined 7 pro boxes to update via the USB media creator. Getting the "something happened" message.

Tried the locale fix mentioned on Reddit, but my locale/language was already correct.

Anyone else having sound issues after their upgrade? I'm getting a pretty bad static sound for everything, even on headphones.

Have you adjusted the levels of your audio devices? Right click the speaker in the task bar, playback properties, right click your device. If the levels are too high you'll get a lot of static over low signal to noise devices. My monitor's output is terrible so I have to keep it at 50 or so

Re the final trash bin...Better than the early betas, I still find it ugly though.

May be better if the removed the recycle icon, you don't need that to know what it is. Look at the sexy ass Yosemite one.

Run Powershell with administrator priv and use this command:
Code:
Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}
Warning - it will reset Cortana and other apps but it should fix the issue (it did for me).

Hmm, it's definitely changed something. Still doesn't work but they all have a exclamation mark on them in the start menu.

somehow I cannot create custom resolution after upgrading to win10 on my pc. I guess back to win8.1 then until it is fixed (by NVidia probably i think)

They are ugly. But so is everything theyve been doing, including Win8 metro screen and the xbox one UI. Ugly is IN apparently.

For whatever reason after upgrading from Windows 8 to Windows 10 last night, my dual boot disappeared and I had to use EasyBCD to get back my dual boot option (for dual booting between Windows 10 Insider Preview and now, the recently upgraded Windows 10 OS).

When I used EasyBCD, instead of the calming blue/modern-style Bootloader of Windows 8 which we are familiar with, I had the archaic Windows XP-style/black on white text bootloader with my 2 options:

How do I go about getting back the modern version of the bootloader?

Edit: Fixed! Followed the directions posted over at neosmart forums to fix my issue! Below are the steps I followed to fix my issue:

Thank you Rodion, that worked for me. I was running dual boot Win 7 & Ubuntu on a dual HDD laptop. I installed Win 8 Pro over the Ubuntu OS and was enjoying my Win 8 metro boot screen, only I got tired of seeing my 3rd option of the uninstalled Linux option to boot into, so I removed it using easyBCD 2.2, clicked save, rebooted and poof gone, back to black and white win 7 boot manager. I found this thread and followed Rodion's instructions. I booted into Win 8 > opened easyBCD > Selected "Useful Utilities" > Selected "EasyBCD Power Console" > ran command bcdboot c:\windows > I then rebooted and was pleasantly surprised to see my Win 8 Metro boot screen. Hope this helps others. Thanks again!

Ok, I'm liking the live tiles a little more now. I resized the start menu to give me more space, then went into tablet mode and arranged/removed/added/resized to my preference. So now they give me a decent amount of info at a glance, plus access to my most used apps (well second-most used, most used go on the taskbar)

I wonder if you can add direct links to steam games with nice icons?

I just got my first crash. I didn't read what was about since it just saw the blue screen with a :( and something happened when I was coming from the bathroom.

has anyone on a laptop figured out a way to change power settings more easily?

as it is now clicking on the battery only gives you the "power saver" option and screen brightness, not a way to change your whole plan from battery saver to high performance or whatever

only way to change between those now is going into the advanced power options which means another window and scrolling etc

kinda used to changing those somewhat on the fly

Why in the effing christ are people booting off USB/DVD? You don't need to do that, nor do you need to choose "Upgrade Now" for a clean install.

Windows key + X and then do Windows key + B to bring up mobility center!

You are welcome!

Also for some reason my Microsoft account only shows one email (Thank your for reserving email) in the mail app, but my gmail account has everything.

Huh, Windows 10 has been good until just now. Cortana doesn't open. Searching doesn't work either (Win key + type).

I just disabled her completely as it was causing a problem with serato (dj program) along with it causing my whole system to run slow. After disabling cortana everything seems to be running smooth and fast.

I feel like I'm losing mind. I've been trying to install it since Tuesday Night and I keep getting either hangups on the "Upgrading Windows" screen for up to 9 hours(Before I went "I need to use this for classes"), or the ISO doesn't recogonize drivers when I'm trying it from the disc, etc.

Anyone got any advice?

So apparently Edge straight up doesn't support Jump Lists. I found a registry tweak to reenable jump lists, which now work in IE11, but they just don't have any support for them in Edge which is a huge bummer.

Same problem on one installation.

Still looking into it, so I feel your pain.

I got to 22% on "Upgrading Windows" and my laptop got so hot it turned itself off. I could barely touch the underside of it with my bare hand.

Back to 8.1 for me! This laptop isn't even that old, I think I bought it in 2013 lol.

It really bothers me how inconsistent the UI is. There are still many icons and elements that are from Vista/7, and like someone mentioned earlier, it makes it feel disjoint.

Anyone having issues with their monitor not going to sleep in Windows 10? I set it to 1 minute to test it and it doesn't seem to be working.

I don't understand this guide. Where am I supposed to look for this key? And if it is not there, how do I create it, with notepad? I have no idea what I'm talking about probably.

1) Open registry editor (start-->run, regedit)

2) Navigate to the registry path indicated in the forum answer

3) Once you're in the OSUpgrade folder, on the right-hand pane, right-click --> New --> DWORD, call it AllowOSUpgrade and give it a value of 1.

You may need to open it up and clean out built up dust. My laptop from around that same time has a large amount of dust caked on and around the heatsink, and it constantly shutdown from overheating until I cleaned it.

read my post from earlier. Don't use this stupid command prompt method that people are trying to tell you to use.

It's a simple command that just starts the installation of downloaded updates. Which is what the issue people are having. Windows 10 was downloaded but no notification to install it. A lot simpler and a lot less risk than editing the Registry at any rate.

I'm on a domain joined box that never got the initial "Get W10" notification because I failed verification. I just downloaded the 30mb file and ran it direct from the desktop. The media creator should DL the iso and run it itself without needing a usb. May need to do it on each computer.

Just one quick question from me guys.

What is defaultuser0 and do I need to worry about it?
I upgraded, then clean installed, then reset as well and this seems to be in my user folder.
I've hidden it, but just curious as to what it is.

Sorry if its already been asked.

Installed this on my dell venue 8 pro and it seems some of dell's drivers still don't support windows 10 yet. My wifi driver is listed as some generic sdio and stopped working after intital restart, and my bluetooth seems very buggy.

Ok, maybe I'm dumb, where do downloaded games and apps from the app store download to? There doesn't appear to be an easy "My apps" section of the store.
