Windows 10 Troubleshooting Thread

Printing question: where did the "selection only" option move to? For example, if I want to highlight text on a website and print only what I selected. Couldn't seem to find it earlier today; all I see when I go to "more settings," where I used to find the option in Win7, is this:

printwin1060sqt.png

So I plan to get an SSD, should I wait to get my SSD first then install Windows 10? Can I choose which drive I can install Windows 10? (Upgrading from Windows 8.1)

You should wait IMO. I would do a clean install of Win 10 to the SSD and then swap and load up your apps from fresh.

I did an update on an old laptop and I actually had to install twice because the first install went screwy. Don't do it to your main HDD unless you have a backup.

I don't seem to have any options in my bios to disable hotswapping.

This didn't happen when I did the upgrade or right after my fresh install. I think it happened when I installed the intel RST app.

I have 2 disks in a raid, those don't show up. My SSD and regular sata drive are both showing as devices and in the remove hardware box. Any ideas how I can fix?

It's not a bug... sata devices can be hot swapped so they appear in that list. Not sure if there is a way to disable it in your situation. What motherboard do you have?

On mine I can choose which sata ports it is enabled on (I actually use it, as I have a drive bay for it in one of my 5.25" slots)

I'm starting to question if I should bother leaving my laptop on over the night to see if it actually changes from 45% or try resetting it, but I don't know if I want to risk that.

In Windows 7 I had my Wallpapers on Shuffle every 3 minutes. Windows 10 does not have the shuffle function available by default to the Slideshow configuration in Display Backgrounds. So here is how you configure it. The options still won't change in the GUI but the slideshow will in fact be shuffled and change every 3 minutes.

1. Open Registry Editor
2. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Personalization\Desktop Slideshow
3. Change Shuffle DWORD from 0 to 1 (Hexadecimal Value)
4. Change Interval DWORD to 180,000 (Decimal Value)

it is probably missing in edge like most other options (eg save as)

My experience so far:
They're batting 1-for-3 on my three Windows devices. I have a Nextbook 10.1 Intel Atom Bay Trail tablet that I was really hyped to put Windows 10 on... but within 24 hours, I rolled it back to 8.1. It's sluggish, buggy, and they really cut out a lot of the good tablet features of W8.1. I really should have done my due diligence; When my frustration with the shitty navigation in Tablet Mode and Desktop Mode (on a tablet) reached a boiling point, I went searching the internets and found this official community thread that has been active for the last 6 months highlighting the problems with the tablet side of Win 10 thoughout each build. All of the issues listed in the RTM build are still present.

I have a Windows 8.1 laptop that I use sparingly. Since it really doesn't have that much on it, I went ahead and did an in-place upgrade. It worked like a champion, though it did take a very long time (which I don't understand because I didn't have very many apps or legacy programs on the system at all). After it finished, the system works just fine, the desktop interface is crisp, clean, and enjoyable to use. I still don't like the division of "Settings" and "Control Panel", but I just made a tile for Control Panel since I can do everything I need to do there.

For my main machine - which, for the sake of clarity I'll refer to as a production machine - I wanted to dual boot Win 10 alongside Win 7 Pro that I've been using since Win 7 went RTM. As anyone who has supported Windows knows, doing an in-place upgrade of a brand new version of Windows on a production machine is asking for trouble and it's better to wait for bug fixes if not the first Service Pack. Unfortunately, Microsoft, in their infinite wisdom, made a direct custom install impossible. I'm sure the convoluted process has been touched upon in this thread, given the thread is 130+ pages long, but for those just tuning in I'll summarize: You basically have to do an in-place upgrade in order to upgrade your product key, retrieve your product key, roll back to your previous OS (and pray it kept everything exactly as you had it), then do a custom install with a bootable version of the ISO. The process is beyond asinine. I'm not going to do an in place upgrade just to roll back the system - that's asking for double trouble. There's no reason for Microsoft to not include a secure system that generates a Windows 10 key based on your existing product ID and hardware hash for a Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 8.1 machine.

Out of three machines, the only one with Win 10 is the one I use the least. Blah. I have to say, I'm not very confident about Windows Phone 10 at this rate (especially since I found a similar thread on the MS Community boards outlining all the problems with the latest builds of WP10).

After reading the reactions to Windows 10 and the advertisement business, I feel I'll stick with Windows 7 for the time being.

Installing Intel Rapid Storage Technology should actually make your HDD/SSD not appear there.

I wanted to do a clean install on the new SSD i brought recently so decided to try my luck and do a straight update to get a win 10 key so I can use on the install on my new SSD. Little did I know this was not such a good idea because I decided to try the option of keeping programs+files which resulted in a black screen on boot for me. Went on to doing a reset then getting the upgrade key through magic jellybean key finder.

Turns out you get a new unique key each time you to an upgrade for the free license which I don't know so I had installed windows 10 on the SSD prior to getting the key meaning I had to download windows 8.1 then upgrade back to win 10.

If you're planning to upgrade I would advise going with keep files only and not + programs because it's going to be a hit or miss depending on the programs you have whether you upgrade fine or not.

Anyone else having touch-pad problems. I have a Toshiba satellite S550t B5150 and when I upgraded to windows 10 my touch-pad get locked after few seconds so I uninstalled the driver and restarted and now my tocuh-pad works but not scrolling functionality.

apologies if this has been discussed, but anyone have issues with the Edge browser's 'Import Favorites' function? Specifically, I wanted to import my stuff from Firefox so I can give the new browser a test run but it's not showing up as a choice.

Hah! I've been installing so many touchpad drivers trying to get things to FEEL right again!

Maybe intel hasn't updated rst for windows 10 yet. I didn't see it in the supported operating systems.

I tried installing my my mobo drivers now, but they were win 7 versions because my mobo is kind of old now (asrock p67 extreme4).

Yeah I tried different drivers too. Windows 10 automatically update to the latest elan driver and break everything.

That's exactly my situation. I just don't understand why ELAN can't provide one up-to-date software solution for all laptops. Ugh.

Well mom's computer updated to Windows 10 and it went well, but the HDMI out wasn't working. I went to AMD's site and downloaded the latest Catalyst driver, now after the restart, the hard drive isn't detected.

Fuck.

Finally got the update downloaded and Windows 10 is gorgeous. Taking a bit to get the drivers situated, but very impressed so far.

Why in the world can't I install Nvidias latest drivers on my PC??? This OS is the worst since Windows XP, just problems all day long -_- If this doesn't get fixed during the weekend I'm reverting back to Windows 8.1 and will wait till Xmas to update to Windows 10

Edit: problems with Bnet to download Starcraft 2, I think I give up

Edit 2: Gore back to Windows 8.1, Sony touch Windows 10 with a stick -_-

Okay I fixed my issue. I don't know if you have a Toshiba laptop but here is what I did:

1. Go to this website http://support.toshiba.com/drivers and put your serial number
2. There will be a lot of drivers for unrelated stuff filter by touchpad on the left panel.
3. Download the elan one it is going to have an old date but that's fine.
4. Start installing, now sometimes it's just extract and it doesn't install if that happen go to the download folder and double click the setup file.
5. reboot and mine worked.

Note: I don't know if that's the actual fix or me dabbling with the many drivers just fixed it.

I tried searching, but I missed the link explaining how to stop Windows from downloading drivers. Could anyone help?

Can anyone with Windows 10 and HBO Now please go to the website and confirm that you can play videos? I was watching shows just fine yesterday on Win 8.1, today I try to fire it up and I get

HBO NOW has run into a problem. -4000

Across Edge, Chrome, and FireFox.

Fuck.

For some reason, AMD stuck the shitty and highly unstable 15.7 drivers (not the latest revision) for cards below model number 7000 on stock OS.

I had to use 14.12 drivers for some APU chipsets out there since 15.7.1 won't install over.

As for you, run setup via USB/DVD and select recovery to get into safe mode. There should be a "Startup Settings" option.

Help! :(

Just update to Win 10. No Sound.

Laptop: Toshiba Satellite L755D-s5104.

Thanks in advance.

I had this problem.

If your sound driver is Conexant, this is what I did.

Ok. Update on the situation.

Apparently the built-in mic does work with the generic Microsoft driver. Setting is tuned very low.

Default Conexant ones don't work at all.

What I did was go to device manager, right click the sound device -> Properties -> Driver -> Update Driver -> Browse my computer for driver software -> Let me pick from a list -> High Definition Audio Device.

Have the tablet drives been fixed in Windows 10? It was aggravating that no matter what I did, my computer couldn't detect the drives after installing Windows 10 yesterday morning. I'm now back to using Windows 7, at least until this issue is corrected.

Only problem I've had thus far is unable to figure out how to do separate wallpapers on each monitor.

I know, small potatoes.. I'm picky.

Installed Windows 10 yesterday. So far, not too bad. I know MS is updating the OS constantly, but one of the jarring aspect of Windows 10 is its inconsistent UI. Some menus are newly built, but some still are straight from Windows 7 and 8. Each use different fonts type and sizes as well as different color scheme and look. Compared to the Mac OS, Windows 10 gives you a feel of half-ass polished UI. They seriously need to come up with an unified UI soon.

Update(like 8 hours later lol):

- Upgrade took about an hour, but I wanted to take my time with the new stuff. AMD drivers also took a bit of time to update but it got done. :) Note: Windows Update did not do this, AMD Control Center picked up the update beforehand, which was a bit surprising.

- All is well, boot/basic apps are slightly faster, settings (especially privacy settings) are where I want them, optimized a few things here and there via CCleaner. Windows.old stays as sort of a month long probation period, hopefully things stay solid by then.

- Some apps via the Store can't be uninstalled, which is unfortunate, but as long as they don't take up any resources behind the scenes I'm good.

Pretty much it, I'll be testing games next then it's back to normal with me. Hopefully it goes as smooth as I expect.

1) Open registry editor (start-->run, regedit)

2) Navigate to the registry path indicated in the forum answer

3) Once you're in the OSUpgrade folder, on the right-hand pane, right-click --> New --> DWORD, call it AllowOSUpgrade and give it a value of 1.

There's no OSUpgrade folder in the "WindowsUpdate" folder. Should I create that folder?

I have created the "AllowOSUpgrade" DWORD (32 bit), but how do I create the "OSUpgrade" folder? When I right click, there's no option for a new folder.

[edit]
Never mind, I found it.
