so is anybody getting the not activated error here?

it worked fine when i upgraded but after the clean install it's staying here not activating.

You could just make one giant image consisting of both wallpapers. I had to do a similar thing.

I just set it to slideshow and selected a folder. Both monitors have a different image... Might not be static but it works. That said, if you want it to be semi-static just create a folder, put your two images in there, then set it to Slideshow on that folder. Then just set the "Change Picture every" to 1 Day.

That said, I'm personally bummed out that my Desktop Background Tuner Tool isn't working anymore with 10. I used to use it in Windows 7 and 8 to have it get all the images in every folder and subfolder of a folder I selected so I could just have it rotate through them all. Now if I want to do something similar, I would have to go in and manually add every single folder or go against my Digital Organization OCD to throw all my images into a single folder:\

Only problem I've had thus far is unable to figure out how to do separate wallpapers on each monitor.

I know, small potatoes.. I'm picky.

Windows is still not supporting that feature. You can't have seperate wallpapers on virtual desktops either, even though it'd be really useful.

You can use Display Fusion if you want to have seperate wallpapers on each monitor, though. I don't know if it supports W10 yet, though.

Not sure how well this will work, but I just tried it and was able to set different wallpapers

go to run (win+r) and enter this:

%windir%\system32\control.exe /name Microsoft.Personalization /page pageWallpaper

It will bring up the legacy wallpaper control panel

I also found that opening the old color menu gives you more accent colors than the new menu (since it has a mixer)

I'm going to post this question in here as well since it's so important for me.

How do I change the user name of my account? Not the PC name but the user name that names the folder in C:/Users/.... It never gave me an option to name it when I did a clean install and now it has a weird name that will mess up some apps that point to file locations within those folders. There has to be a way to change this right? I'm just not seeing it anywhere. If someone can please help, I would be most appreciative. It's quite important for me to fix this.

OS: Windows 10 PRO

Anyone?

So let's say I build a new computer. Do I have to install Win 7/8 on it or can I just load it with a W10 ISO?

Yeah, just right click on the desktop, then click personalize. All of the settings are there.

This is not correct. There is a lock screen, a system login screen, and a user logon screen. The user logon screen cannot be changed with the native settings. Someone made a tool for this, but I wouldn't recommend it.

Can anyone help me activate my Windows 10?

When I click "Change Product Key" Windows 10 settings windows freezes and does nothing whereas the rest of windows 10 keeps running just fine.

When I use cmd prompt to enter the Product Key it tells me it's non core product or it's an invalid key.

I got a Windows 8 pro key.

And I've installed Windows 10 Pro

I'm confused :S

If you don't have a retail Windows 10 key, but only a Win 7/8 key then you need to install Win 7/8 first.

Please tell me that isn't true?

Why can't I just install Windows 10 as a clean install like I wanted to, and then just enter the windows 8 key?

I cannot upgrade to Windows 10. I tried everything (from reformatting to disconnecting other HDs/DVD/SSD. Do you think Microsoft Support would give me a key if I provide proof that I bought Windows 8 from them?

I have booted my computer and the display isn't covering the whole of my monitor for some reason. So I have basically got a black border, how can I get rid of this?

Thanks.

Because a Windows 8 key is not a Windows 10 key. You can upgrade from Windows 8, and then refresh your PC afterwards or retrieve the key out of the OS.

That just seems like such an illogical waste of fucking time.

I know it's not your decision I'm just saying lol.

Also the upgrade didn't work for me.

I had Windows 8 and the upgrade corrupts my PC and blue screens. My only option at this point is a clean install.

I'm fucked aren't I?

If you open the command line and type slmgr /dli and hit enter, wait a bit for a window to pop up. I think it'll tell you if it's Retail or OEM. Regardless I believe Retail and OEM are eligible.

Thanks, that worked. I already upgraded from Win8, but apperantly upgrading from Vista Home Premium to Win8 Pro years ago when there was an upgrade offer turned my OEM license into retail.

Did you try a clean install of Windows 8 first, then upgrade?

So I plan to get an SSD, should I wait to get my SSD first then install Windows 10? Can I choose which drive I can install Windows 10? (Upgrading from Windows 8.1)

i think you need to be on a fully updated 8.1 to upgrade to Windows 10. so your options i think are
1) install win 8 on your new ssd, update to win 8.1, install countless updates, then update to win 10

2) update your current hdd to w10, activate it (so your key is attached to your account), then clone it to your ssd.

if you want a fresh install you have to upgrade from 8.1 first anyway, then once upgraded you can do a reinstall of a clean w10

Well, it also ties the machine to the one you installed Windows 8 on. And this way they can keep track of the free for one year. Then it also encourages people to use reset your PC instead of clean installs.

The upgrade will probably eventually work although finding support atm is a bit difficult with everybody upgrading.

just do a clean install of Windows 8 then, activate your machine and then do the upgrade right afterwards.

seeing as i did that and the "Windows.old" folder ended up being 36GB, i doubt there's much left in place from the original install after upgrading to Windows 10.

that's as clean as you'll need it to be, really.

I can't even get to install screen, it says update ready and gives me the option to "OK, let's continue" and tells me that it might take 10 seconds of prep time but it stays in the next phase where it's "Working on it" forever.

Thanks.

I had the same, the issue was my GeForce drivers. I also couldn't re-install them, so I ended up removing them using Control Panel / Programs and then reinstalling the drivers fresh from the Nvidia page. Works perfectly now.

I just reinstalled them, hopefully it doesn't happen again.

So uh, does anyone know how the licenses work for DreamSpark? I see it has many editions of Windows 10 available from Windows 10 EDU all the way to the normal Windows 10 Pro and Home. Is the Windows 10 Pro/Home just straight up normal keys? Because I got a product key for Windows 10 "Multiple Editions". I guess it'll active on either? I'm still doing my masters so I'm a student still. :P

Ugh, Edge still has problems with showing avatars on Gaf for me. I hoped that MS would've fixed that before they went live with Windows 10. Firefox and Opera show them fine yet Edge is hit or miss on two different devices. Internet Explorer gave me the same problem, only IE on Windows Phone 8.1 doesn't give me the problem. Really annoying.

So let me get this straight, regarding Windows Updates now..

They removed Windows Update from the classic control panel, and replace it with the PC Settings interface where you can't select individual updates on or off anymore, and it doesn't even display how big the updates are to download? What?

All the voice commands I never saw myself ever needing to use on mobile, I'm already using a lot on Win10. <3 Cortana already

i will not ever talk to a machine that has a perfectly fine keyboard and mouse connected to it. Especially given the fact that voice commands work only 70% as well in German versions as they do in American English. (and sound quite as dumb)

I'm confused ... How come I don't have Control Panel?

if you right click the start button, you do.

Windows' version of Spotlight (also Cortana?) is a bit dumb, sometimes.

Back when i was still trying to activate my license of Windows 10, i opened "System", like, every 5 minutes.
doing "Win-Key 'S Y S T E M' " still thought i wanted to go to 'System information' first, and 'System' second...

You do. If you have an older machine, or a HDD rather than an SSD the caching process can take a little while.

Thanks both of you!

Follow Method 2 and finally what the last post in the thread says.

Both of these methods worked. However, there were several registry keys that weren't updated so I manually did them. Just did a search for the username that I didn't want and replaced any path instances with the username that I did want.

Thank you both. You have no idea how much trouble you have saved me.

I know..had to do this last night after reinstalling the OS thinking that I missed something during the process..but no dice. Windows 10 is the first OS to not give this folder the correct name and.... only on my Surface 3. All other devices I have installed the OS on are fine... odd.

Upgraded from Win 7 x64 on Wednesday and it activated automatically.
Did a clean install on a new HDD and it activated automatically again.

I suspect it logged the MAC of my MB during the activation of the upgrade and found the MAC again on the clean install.
It asked for a key on the clean install twice but I just pressed skip.

All good.

Copying my steamapps from my old drive to the new one.
I adore the new move dialog box. Massive improvement from the old one that would hang and crash.

Settings is the new control panel. You can still access the old one by entering "Control Panel" in the explorers path.

that's not quite accurate, as there are many settings that aren't visible or have limited options in "Settings" compared to the control panel, or vice versa.

there's still buttons / clickable text that will have Settings switch you over to Control panel.

They're not functionally identical. They have weird overlaps / redundancies.
