Windows 10 Troubleshooting Thread

Hey, I'm having a problem with installing Windows 10 at the moment. I have a HP Pavillion laptop with Windows 8.1 in it. When I try to install the Windows 10, the fans go to absolute overdrive while copying files, and now for twice in a row the laptop just shuts down at around 26-28% done of the whole install, and when I open the laptop again, it just reverts back to 8.1.

It's pretty frustrating, and I have no idea what to do about it. It could be an overheat issue, but why does it shut down twice at the same parts? Or am I just doomed with this HP laptop now.

Guys, what's the best way to do a full bit-for-bit/clone backup of WIndows 8.1 before upgrading to Windows 10?

I'd like to be able to revert back just in case.

Just an FYI, I'm working on the OT for Windows 10. Question to everyone, do you want to use this thread or the OT to talk installation issues? Seems like this one has already grown legs with the tech support crowd. I don't care either way, just a question. OP? You have a preference? PM me if you want.

Did you do a clean install or an upgrade?

I'm on a laptop.

I did an upgrade followed by a reset, and my laptop boots very quickly. It's significantly faster than W7 was. Actually logging into my user takes a bit longer, but that's what you get with an old-ass HDD I guess.

Mrgrgrr this is the one thing that is bothering me most. I want it to boot fast. I have good hardware. Blank screen with cursor pls.

Anyone know how to get rid of that "search windows" on the taskbar ? Any other things to change, as I just upgraded?

Google really needs to get Chrome updated visually, it looks absolutely hideous mixed with the W10 UI. Edge definitely wins on that front for now.

Hey, since you seem to know some stuff: Can I somehow get the action center to show up on the left side of the screen? I prefer having the task bar vertically to the left, but it looks and feels stupid when I click the action center icon and it opens up on the opposite side of the screen.

better than my mum & dad's next door neighbour's which is set to 'FUCKOFF'. Nice.

I have 2 going for 5Ghz and 2.4Ghz.

2.4Ghz is MyCatIsFat because my cat is rather fat.

The 5Ghz is a Game of Throne Spoiler that I've had for awhile since I read the books. Don't click if you don't want to know the spoiler. I even updated it at one point lol.

The first Was
Jon Snow is dead

Then I updated it to
Jon Snow is still dead

Already did that and it didn't work. Read about the "rebuild index" button and tried that but it still doesn't work...

Maybe it's because you assigned "A:" to your drive... I wouldn't be surprised if they just assume that might be a floppy drive if found and never perform searches on it.

My an amazing journey.

So I installed Legit Windows 8 Pro 64

Updated it to Max

Installed Windows 8.1 Pro 64

Updated it to Max

Now I try the USB loader and it says my product key is invalid what the fuck?

I know it's not a Windows 10 key is an 8 key but it's a free upgrade right?

Windows 10 is on my PC. The BT folder is at 3GB Updates actually downloaded the entirety of Windows 10 I watched it, it prepared and then failed.

How do I force the existing shit to just install?

I saw someone show a command prompt that allowed you to force the New OS to install once downloaded.

Feel like I'm back at square one after 48 hours and about 20 installs.

EDIT: Found it, was the registry edit Dword I was after.

It's downloading. Crossing my fucking fingers this works.

So everything I read before the updating indicated that File History was the same from Win 8.

That's not true. You no longer have to use Libraries; you can just set folders to include and exclude.

So I'm finally going to give File History a real go. I have high hopes.

Reverted back to 7 to sort the scaling on my new monitor, CCC wasn't opening in 10 (I have an old gfx card so no surprise).

Don't know if i'll go back to 10 straight away, i'm already fed up of the daft log-in system and pointless lock screen.

Can you give me a link to your background image? I'm using a 4K screenshot of the Millenium Falcon flying into the crashed Super Star Destroyer, but I wouldn't mind having the background switch between that and this one.

You can't just say "4K screenshot of the Millenium Falcon flying into the crashed Super Star Destroyer" and not provide a link.

I keep getting "something happened" on the Windows 10 iso download tool, my language setting was already on US English which was the fix for some people, I tried it with Canadian english too.

Only reason the product key doesn't work is because you have to upgrade to Windows 10 first for it to be known as a Windows 10 product key. That way you can do clean installs in the future. It has worked for other people before without having to upgrade first, so it might just be something that's screwy at the moment.

If you want to force it to install try this method posted earlier.

Download the media creation tool from the Windows 10 download page, run it, choose "Upgrade now" (or something similar). Done (unless you get "something happened", in which case I guess something happened). No need to load it onto a USB stick or anything.

That sucks. Maybe I'll just leave the task bar at the bottom then. But that's just such an inefficient use of space on a widescreen monitor! Almost all content (at least on the web) is vertical in nature.

And that's why I love having my second monitor in portrait.

I did run into my first major issue. Coming back from a game, Counter Strike Source specifically, screen went black as if it couldn't restore the desktop environment - or at least couldn't display it. Waited a few minutes before I forced a shutdown.

I'm getting a Critical Error message.

"Start Menu and Cortana aren't working. We'll try to fix it the next time you sign in."

So I sign out, and every time I go back in I get the same problem. Even doing a full shut down and reboot does not fix the problem. Help!

Sounds like rampancy. Unlucky mate.

Yeah, that's what I typically do, but it bugs me that the action center appears on the opposite side of the screen when I click its icon. I'll just have to deal with that, I guess.

Well if it'll make you feel any better you could always just hit Windows key + A.

When I try to search files just by typing it in I only get live results for anything in my user folder. If I want to get search results for anything else that has been indexed, I have to click the "my stuff" button first. Is this normal or is my installation broken?

It's annoying me because 7 and 8 had find as you type for all indexed folders.

No freezes yet! #TeamNoFreeze

Seriously though, it's likely to be hardware related as a lot of manufacturers still need to step up their driver game for Win 10.

Ahh yeah #TeamNoFreeze

Windows 10 has been running better than 8 so far. No snags or hangups like before as of yet. Sucks that others are having so many issues.

I fucking finally did it.

Windows 10 Pro 64bit Activated and installed.

Fuck me.

All that effort fixed with a simple registry edit fucking joke.

I had a problem with Windows 8 where my PC would never go to sleep on its own. Win 10 fixed that. I'm pretty happy about that.

Updated an old windows machine here at work, so far the only hiccup is the old-ass video hardware doesn't have any official drivers and the available resolutions are all 4:3 and not widescreen.

same thing here. I put it back on the bottom for now - left is better, but action center works better when the icon you click is close to where it appears - which means task bar on the bottom or right (which is weird)
