Windows 10 Troubleshooting Thread

I upgraded my laptop (HP Pavilion w/ Nvidia GeForce GT740M) to W10 yesterday and I seem to have a bit of a problem getting it to use the full screen resolution (1080p). I'm going into settings and the highest resolution appears to be 1336 x 768. I check the display adapter and it seems to be using the integration Intel HD graphics rather than the graphics card, which may be the source of the problem.

So far, I've updated the Nvidia drivers, set the use of the 740M to global in the Nvidia control panel and even tried disabling the Intel graphics drivers, but still no luck despite the 740M being functional and available. I haven't even tried watching HD video on the thing yet.

Is this just something I'm stuck with until Nvidia or Microsoft issue a fix?

I've got the same thing. Friggin' sucks. Even if you right click on the desktop and try display settings it'll give you an error. Lots of people seem to be having the same problem - http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...ndows-10/df2e58bc-38df-4af2-af4c-a2e538a29a0a

Not that particular window, but occasional menus and dialog boxes exhibiting the same opening for a split second and disappearing has been the main issues I've had.

Found the fix: I went to the link below...
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...e/ec439819-7ee4-4b4d-abdd-35d82e04c55f?page=1

And went to the link in the original post. Downloaded the file and ran it, and in 5 seconds my Settings, Personalize and Display settings buttons were working

ok I figured it out, I had 2 different sound drivers installed so I had to remove the old one that came with my laptop and replace it with the High Definition Audio Device provided by MS. Annoying but w/e

I'm finding the apps pretty useless. They lag, are less intuitive, and seem to have less options than their website equivalents.

I asked this in the TechSupportGAF thread, but i'll ask here as well.

No sound through DisplayPort since the upgrade. I cycled through frequencies in the advanced sound device properties as the Windows FAQ suggested but that didn't solve my problem.

My monitor shows up in playback devices, I can set it as default and the meter moves when sound should be coming out of it, but I got nothing.

Sometimes it shows up in Catalyst and sometimes it doesn't.

When Windows 10 booted for the first time, I had sound, but after the first round of Windows Updates it stopped. I did notice that it forced me to download the HDAudio Drivers for my motherboard's sound chip and those ports are the only audio ports that work now.

Any ideas?

Ideas on how to open the "game bar" (Win + G) without a Windows key? My model M doesn't have one...

You could assign a Windows key to another key using a program like KeyTweak:

Or you could add your own shortcut in the Xbox App:

Posting again because it was the last post on its page:

I forgot to format my hard drive before doing a clean install (did the upgrade before to have my key updated) and now there are windows.old and windows.old000 folders.

Is it effectively a clean install if I delete those?

(I tried deleting them but it kept bugging me for admin rights for specific files and even though it failed at a couple of them the folders are gone, lol.)

Also, does your desktop background sync via your MS account? Because I still had the same desktop as before the clean install.

Another question as a Lenovo Yoga 2 13 user: I used some Vista Synaptics Touchpad driver to get three finger click, because Lenovo's drivers didn't have that.
Now, even the new Windows 10 one from Lenovo's website doesn't have it, and I can't get the old Vista driver to work on Windows 10. Does anybody have an idea where to install a driver from so I have three finger click back?

I went from Windows 7 to 10 and now my videos or sound wont work unless I have headphones plugged in

Sounds like(lol) you have the hd audio soundcard problem. You have to goto device manager, under sound, video and game controllers, select your soundcard, right click, select uninstall and delete driver.. This will make sound work almost instantly(no reboot required) (edit i see you already got this part fixed)

Ofc this will most likely be fucked up again next time windows update runs, so you proberly have to kill that as well

Do any of your screen turns off after a certain period of time? I made sure that screen and sleep are set to OFF, it's kinda driving me crazy:

sXVsK7Tl.png
This was happening to me in an early preview build, and it turned out that there was a blank screensaver set to turn on after five minutes. Took me forever to figure out why my power settings weren't working!

I can't install anything in the Windows Store. I get error code 0x80070002 when trying to install Minecraft. I also tried out other programs like Netflix, but those won't install.

Hi, this less of a troubleshooting issue and more of a preliminary question. I own a Japanese laptop with Windows 8 and a friend with the same laptop said that when he installed 10 he was told that by setting the language to English all of his installed programs etc. would be deleted and that he would have to start over. If I initially set it to Japanese, can I go back and change my primary language to English later?

yes you can download and install other language packs later

So I just spent the last day updating Windows 7 after not doing it for at least a year, and it's still telling me its not up to date. Do I need to install all those optional language packs as well before I get the app?

I don't really know how to word my issue but I think it's related to spacing. In Windows 8.1 the icons on my desktop would be closer together than they are now.

As you can see there is a huge gap below my trash bin followed by the next icon, this was not the case in 8.1.

So can I adjust the spacing somehow?

Apparently there is a solution. Ask this guy: http://neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=173476962&postcount=5883

It might be this: http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/9094-desktop-icons-change-horizontal-vertical-spacing-windows-8-a.html It's for Windows 8, but lots of registry fixes work across Windows versions.

So I have a Surface Pro 3 and Windows 10 is awful. I use mine in a dock, and loved the original start screen but that's now gone and I have to scroll apps in the start bar (whut)

One of the biggest pains is snapping in desktop mode is trash. Also, CTRL+D short cut has vanished.

There are now modes for desktop or tablet, and I'm endlessly switching between the two and losing features. For some odd reason, there is no show desktop tile in tablet mode, so anything on my desktop I have to try find otherways.

Ugh, Windows 10 is a mess for hybrid devices, the on screen keyboard doesn't even show up when you touch a text box in desktop mode, and the search bar (Windows UI) slides out and covers the button to activate the on screen keyboard..!

Anyone whos having trouble with live tiles refreshing .. do you by chance happen to have a custom "advance text sizing" selected? Meaning from control panel do a text scaling besides the predetermined 100/150/175/200?

I kept switching it to odd scale and live tiles died... turning it to a stock scale fixed them almost immediately as if it were a display issue

I am going insane.

Everytime I try to upgrade I get error 80070005.

Even tried to use the media creation tool and the damn think refuses to even open.

I am losing it. ANYONE else here have these issues? I have tried literally every thing I could find online and no dice.

I had the same error. Restarted the PC and logged in as the administrator. No more error.

I upgraded to Windows 10 Pro, clean Install besides my other hard-drives that had Steam and Origin Games.

However I'm getting very inconsistent ping, up and down all of a sudden, I cant even check my ping/packet loss on speedtest as its saying my firewall may be blocking it.

Main games I tried were, Team Fortress 2,CS GO and BF4 and all are local Australian servers, it keeps fluctuating 20,40,60 then 150-200, then back down to 30,50 etc... it isn't consistent, this never used to happen on Windows 8.1.

I disabled all the crap in Windows 10 like cortana, bandwidth sharing etc, anyone have a clue as what might be happening?

Ugh I don't like the way Windows 10 handles file associations.

For example, if you'd install VLC Media Player on Windows 7, the application itself will setup all file extensions for media such as music formats of video formats automatically.

With Windows 10 this doesn't seem to happen, if I go to an .avi, the first time I run it I have to tell Windows 10 to use VLC. If I find a .mkv, same shit.

If I go to VLC options and click "setup file associations" it tells me to go to Settings -> System -> Default apps. There Windows shows "music player" and "video player" to choose an app for. So both are set to VLC but still if I come across a new video file type I and run it I need to choose VLC and it'll remember it.

I'm not sure if this is a VLC issue or Windows 10 issue but it's dumb. I have the latest VLC too.

I'm seriously struggling to upgrade. My Windows 7 is up to date, and I have SP1, yet when I run the diagnostic tool on the MS website regarding the "Get Windows 10" app, it tells me my version of Windows is not supported due to it not being up to date.

Could I just upgrade from the media creation tool without hassle? Or will I require a product key?

Count me as another having internet issues.

Specifically, I'm on Windows 10 Pro and have a Netgear A6210 AC Wifi USB 3.0 adapter for my desktop that I've been using for a couple of months. Under Windows 8.1 it ran perfectly fine. Under Windows 10, the thing can't seem to stay connected to the internet. Steps:

1.) Plug in Wifi adapter

2.) Wait for it to find wifi network

3.) 20-200 seconds, it the device loses network connectivity, jumps in and out of being seen by the computer and never provides a working network connection (despite sometimes saying it is in fact connected to the internet).

4.) Repeat #1.

I spent more than a couple of hours trying to figure out some settings in the Device Properties to enable/disable, but came up with nothing. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers multiple times and there are no minimal power settings in the wifi properties to turn on as is suggested in some older FAQs I've seen. There are no new drivers for the device and the existing version of the drivers should get the job done. I've noted that it's perfectly stable when I connect it to any of my USB 2.0 sockets where it is slower but completely steady. But when connecting to USB 3.0 it goes shaky. And this is the same USB 3.0 hub that had no problems on Win 8.1 and with which no other USB 3.0 device is having any issues.

I'm back to internet over powerline for now. I have no idea what's causing this in Win 10. If anyone has any ideas, I'm all ears.

Try Settings > System > Default apps > Set defaults by app. From there you should be able to set VLC to open everything it can. I don't think programs are allowed to do it themselves anymore (security reasons maybe).

How painless is the upgrade? I want to try this but don't want to lose my computer for a day or anything. Also worried about losing my files, nothings happened like that to anyone has it?

Took about 20 minutes on my desktop with an SSD and fast internet. Significantly longer on my slow ass old laptop.

You don't need a key to upgrade using the tool.

Cheers XO5, I've downloaded those files so when I next turn on my computer hopefully it has been fixed.

I had the same issue, as well as not being able to disable the touch pad. The solution I found was to uninstall and re install either or both the ASUS ATK and smart gesture packages from ASUS's support portal.

Thanks man, I'll bear this in mind if I still run into some issues.

So I noticed that they removed the details bar at the bottom and instead turned it into a "details pain" which takes up a huge vertical space rather than the minimalistic details bar. Is there a way to bring it back?

I'm getting the same thing on my iMac on bootcamp.

BAD_BANNER_POOL I believe? with a frownie face, won't stay up for longer than 5 mins and shuts down

Exact thing! I am not sure how to handle this now. I do not have much on this machine that I care about, but I would like to double check that. Then whatever the next step is.....

Mail app on Windows 10 won't let me add an email account. Every time I choose to add an account, it tells me to wait, and then displays the 0x800706d9 error message. Not a huge deal because I also use the outlook web client, but still, any ideas? Thanks.

It was actually a Windows 8 change. This might do the trick, although it doesn't seem worth the risk:

http://www.intowindows.com/how-to-move-details-pane-to-the-bottom-of-windows-8-1-file-explorer/

I'd just turn that shit off altogether with Alt+Shift+P if it's bothering you.

Still no sign of W10 on my notebook. Any tips ?
Made the reservation months ago.
