Hey GAF, just reinstalled windows 7 since I got a new mobo, cpu, and gpu.

I want to upgrade to Windows 10 asap. The little icon near the clock in the bottom right hand corner isn't showing up for Windows 10. I've done all the Windows Updates for 7. Before I reinstalled Windows 7 I did 'reserve my copy of Windows 10' and have been emailed about it, but not given a code yet.

Should I just try the manual instal? Should I wait it out till I get emailed my code? Do I need that little icon?

Is there some tweak or registry edit we can do to change the "Ask me anything" text on the cortana bar?
i love reddit, but being reminded of AMA's every time i look at the task bar will get annoying after a while.
being able to change it to What can i help you with? or what do you need? would be so much better.

anyone have any ideas?

Cortana seems to be working fine for me now. I even had her singing, which made me wish it was still broken. Other than that it's handy for starting music from across the room without getting my phone out, but once it's playing there's no chance it's ever going to hear me again until I go and pause it. Is there a phone app or something, that I can talk into and then control her from there?

Try this:

Assuming that works and the icon appears, reserve Windows 10 and then do this to force the upgrade rather than waiting your turn:

http://neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=173455764&postcount=5540

If you are very eager to upgrade, tech savvy users with the above message can modify the following registry key to install immediately.

Warning: Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Before you modify it, back up the registry for restoration in case problems occur.

1.Locate the registry key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\ OSUpgrade]

2.It should exist, but if not, create it.

3.Create a new DWORD (32-bit) Value with Name = "AllowOSUpgrade” (without the quotes), and set the Value = 00000001 (hexadecimal).

Once the registry key is modified, close and reopen the desktop Control Panel, go to Windows Update and check for updates. You should now be able to click the Get Started button to upgrade to Windows 10. Note: Windows 8.1 users must go to the desktop Control Panel, and not the modern Windows Update UI.”

There should be an option in the application to upgrade without creating media if I gave the correct link

Alright, thanks a lot !!

You don't get a code via email. Once the popup is there, you can install it and it will activate by itself.

Did you first upgrade your Win8.1 partition and grab the updated key afterward? If you tried an old school clean install (for dual boot) without entering a key, you won't be able to activate.
The only way you can do a clean install to dual boot is to:

- Do an in place upgrade of your existing Windows 8.1;
- Use some software (e.g. Speccy) to grab your upgraded Windows 10 product key;
- Roll back to Windows 8.1;
- Start the clean/custom install via USB;
- Enter the key from your in place upgrade

Then activation should work. It's a messy, convoluted process. Alternatively, you'd have to buy an actual license to get a product key for dual booting. =/

How do I rollback to Windows 8.1? During my installation, it said that I won't be able to boot as Windows 8.1 as I believe to have chosen the same partition.

I guess since I'm in Canada, the keyboard language defaults to having both US and Canadian English so there is a constant ENG button on the taskbar. Short of removing the Canadian English keyboard option (since I cannot remove the US English option), is there anyway to permanently get the language notification off the taskbar? The option to disable it in Settings -> Notifications & Actions -> Turn System icons on or off seems to revert back to on when I restart.

Does anyone know how Game DVR in the Xbox app is storing the footage before you save it? Does it keep it in RAM or is it constantly writing to the disk? Because as far as I can see, there's no way of changing where this temporary file is being kept and I have no idea where that may be. If it's going to be writing to a disk all the time I'd rather it be my HDD and not my SSD.

Hey guys, I was using my 42inch LG TV as my primary monitor on Windows 8.1

Now on Windows 10 it won't even detect it! Please help :(

Edit - Never mind, all I had to do was restart lol

edge is quite flaky. I just had two windows opened - one with a bunch of tabs for general browsing, the other had iplayer on it for watching alongside browsing. I closed the iplayer window, and it disappeared, but my main window lost all its tabs, and the iplayer URL appeared on the address bar but nothing loaded. It then became unresponsive and I had to quit it from task manager. Relaunching didn't bring my tabs back.

Alright I was lied to

I was told i could have my apps menu exactly how it was in 8.1 in windows 10 but in reality i can only have the start menu

So is anyone having the issue where 10 is pushing computer's RAM and CPU while in idle? its really bad and worries me. Has there any fixes for this? FWIW I upgraded from win7 on a device with 4 GB ram with an i3.

Check task manager. There's a lot of initial search indexing which might have not completed yet, but once it has, it stops unless you ever throw a ton of files on the system at once.

Question regarding default apps.

In previous versions, if I double click a URL on IRC, it'd open my default browser, in this case FF.

But right now, I don't even get an option when the 'default apps' menu pops up. I get Edge, Chrome and...two IEs.

Thoughts?

edit - nm, for whatever reason I had to reset FF as being the default browser a few times before it started working again.

Alright, a minor nibble regarding audio devices.

Previously whenever I plugged in my headphones all audio would transfer to the front jack. Now only some (teamspeak) transfers to it unless I make it default manually. If I default the frontjack and unplug it, I hear nothing.

Another question as a Lenovo Yoga 2 13 user: I used some Vista Synaptics Touchpad driver to get three finger click, because Lenovo's drivers didn't have that.
Now, even the new Windows 10 one from Lenovo's website doesn't have it, and I can't get the old Vista driver to work on Windows 10. Does anybody have an idea where to install a driver from so I have three finger click back?

Download the latest driver with the features you want and if it is a Windows 8.1 driver, just install it under compatibility mode (Windows 8). I had to do this for my Acer laptop to keep three-finger swiping and clicking.

I'm having issue with new window/popup opens behind existing window after upgrading to 10. Anyone has any idea how to fix this? I tried changing ForegroundLockTimeout to 0 in registry but it didn't fix the issue.

I'm getting really weird hard drive issues. If I go to move a file or delete a file, there is a delay. The window will popup for the delete or move but it doesn't do anything for like 5-10 seconds. I almost feel like it's getting scanned by something. After that brief delay, it will proceed as normal. It's quite annoying. It doesn't matter what the size of the file(s) are. And it happens across all of my hard drives both internal and external. I'm also getting very erratic transfer speeds. Moving files between internal and external on USB 3.0 and I get speeds anywhere from 2MBs to 80MBs per second. And it's strange because I was moving several video files that were in the same location to a destination that is the same but individual video files would transfer at different speeds. Like the first video file was transferring at around 3-4MBs per second but then the second one was more at the 60-80MBs per second range. And these weren't separate processes. I mean I selected both videos and copy/pasted them at the same time. Anyone experiencing any of these same issues?

er - my xbox app just went semi-transparent and when I move it around, the mouse pointer turns into a red pushpin. What is that, and how do I turn it off?

Is there a way when using Windows 10 Mail to show all mails separately regardless of all replies within the mail...at the moment its showing all the connected mails joined into one and i have to collapse/uncollpase to see each response in the trail?

Okay I'll be sure to check it out and report back here when I get off work later tonight.

I haven't got my Windows 10 yet but I have a question before I install it.
Windows Update is suggesting I install video card drivers from February and if I do Geforce Experience tells me to install drivers from July

Which makes Update tell me to install the drivers from February and round it goes.
Right now I can just ignore Update but I keep hearing about automatic driver update and that have me worried.

Can I ignore the update suggestions somehow in Windows 10?

Anyone else having a weird issue with default system fonts? The Mail app in particular has some random goofy-ass font to display the body text that makes it next to unreadable and I don't see any place I can change that.

I noticed the same goofy font popup during an installation of another piece of software, so it seems like it may be a system-wide thing for unspecified fonts, hard to verify.

So I installed Windows 10 on my new computer that's hooked up to my TV via HDMI. The issue is that my TV, although a 1080p TV, actually doesn't display it fully. So the entire border of the display gets cut off by like, 3%.

I used to be able to fix this within Nvidia's driver where it allows for scaling so I just shrink down the display a little bit and it works well.

Can't find that anymore in Windows 10. Looked into Nvidia's control panel for my GTX 960 and I see nothing of that sort. Maybe it's hidden somewhere ?

Fixed that. However, I'm wondering if HDMI -> DVI or DVI -> HDMI cable would eliminate the need for scaling at all ?

Can you turn off Overscan in your TV settings? I know on my TV if I set it to a "Full" video mode it'll display correctly without any changes required by the GPU.

And if you can't, should be in the "Adjust Desktop Size and Position" section of the NV Control Panel, in the "Size" tab.

I have tried like 50 times to install windows 10. I have windows 7 currently and I get the same error every time: C1900101. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Getting a black screen here after the Windows logo comes up. No cursor either. What to do?

That happened to me a couple times during updates (with the consumer preview). You could wait a few minutes or if nothing happens, force it turn off, and try powering it on again.

A lot of the metro tiles have stopped working for me, and going to the store they fail to update. Also can't install any new app, the store just closes.

Pic of store update page:-

Been trying several things to fix it. sfc /scannow shows some corrupted files which seem to do with some Microsoft Edge icon.

I might try an reset tomorrow or I'll wait to see if an update fixes it - I don't use most of the apps anyway.

Count me as another having internet issues.

Specifically, I'm on Windows 10 Pro and have a Netgear A6210 AC Wifi USB 3.0 adapter for my desktop that I've been using for a couple of months. Under Windows 8.1 it ran perfectly fine. Under Windows 10, the thing can't seem to stay connected to the internet. Steps:

1.) Plug in Wifi adapter

2.) Wait for it to find wifi network

3.) 20-200 seconds, it the device loses network connectivity, jumps in and out of being seen by the computer and never provides a working network connection (despite sometimes saying it is in fact connected to the internet).

4.) Repeat #1.

I spent more than a couple of hours trying to figure out some settings in the Device Properties to enable/disable, but came up with nothing. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers multiple times and there are no minimal power settings in the wifi properties to turn on as is suggested in some older FAQs I've seen. There are no new drivers for the device and the existing version of the drivers should get the job done. I've noted that it's perfectly stable when I connect it to any of my USB 2.0 sockets where it is slower but completely steady. But when connecting to USB 3.0 it goes shaky. And this is the same USB 3.0 hub that had no problems on Win 8.1 and with which no other USB 3.0 device is having any issues.

I'm back to internet over powerline for now. I have no idea what's causing this in Win 10. If anyone has any ideas, I'm all ears.
anyone :(
