Windows 10 Troubleshooting Thread

I have my friend's laptop and tried to upgrade.
I have the black screen on startup, no cursor, can boot in safe mode, but not much else.
Intel graphics 4000, so I guess the driver's aren't out yet?

Will revert it to win 7 if no fix.

Or will a clean install fix this?
I have enough backup to do so.

Does Windows+Enter cause the narrator to turn on?

Was using Windows 10 since it came out and had no driver issues, then last night for 2 hours or so it crashed about 6 times in total but quickly recovered no problem. Then I restarted my PC and it hasn't happened since. I wonder if it may have had something to do with the N64 emulator I used yesterday, it wasn't running when it was crashing but it was fine the whole week with many other games, but after an hour or two after using the emulator (and closing it) I got lots of display crashes. May have just been coincidence though, no idea. Been fine since the restart though.

installed it on my 8" 100$ Chinese tab, it was working fine, but suddenlystarted crashing on boot, so I've gone back to windows 8.1 to see if it was just the windows 10 install

Hi,

I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10, Hitting the Windows Key X brings up the menu as it should although from the list Desktop,Shutdown,Run and Search are the only menu options that open. The other options click like they are going to open but they don't. I've done some checking and found the directory c:\User\<user>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\WinX which houses the shortcut's for the Power User Menu. When I click those links all of them load correctly. I'm not quite sure what's causing the menu choices from the Windows Key X or if for example I pinned a directory onto the file explorer when I try to click the pin item by right click and then left click the item will not open. Any idea's or help will be greatly apprenticed.

Thanks

Having problems with my second monitor, which is a TV, since upgrading.

Basically when things are full screen, all the edges are cut off. Never had the problem before and I feel I've tried everything.

Both monitors are 1920x1080, drivers are all updated, I've tried unplugging/restarting, there's no overscan option in the TV menu, all the Display options only seem to make things bigger, Catalyst Control Centre only lets me adjust settings/overscan on my primary monitor but gives no options for the TV.

I'll be very thankful if anyone has any other ideas because it feels I've been trying to fix this for hours.

Also, no.

How do you remove the "ENG" on the task bar?

Normally I would just disable that language bar in the language options. But can't see it in W10. :/

I think you can remove it by deleting the additional keyboard settings, if there is only one, I don't think it will show.

I use my default monitor speakers most of the time (headset for gaming), connection through HDMI.

On W10 I get the message "an HDMI to DVI display connection has been detected ... you will need to have a separate audio connection", when it is just an HDMI cable. No sound, monitor not in playback devices.

Device manager/catalyst sees the monitor properly as far as I can tell. Tried resetting, disabling/enabling stuff in device manager. Anyone?

Hey there, quick question, is it possible to get a tile for Word Online which directly leads me towards it?

I don't know what that is, but assuming it's an installed applciation with an exe file, usually I create a shortcut on my desktop to the exe and then "pin to start". You can then delete the desktop shortcut.

And of course, just after I ask for help I work it out. Found some hidden setting in the Intel Control Panel which let me scale the TV down.

This isn't critical but still very annoying.

Has anybody come across this issue -- I've had it on three machines now -- where random small sized tile icons go really low res and fill the entire tile?

As you can see, the store and Groove Music tile icons have filled out whilst the Film & TV icon is normal. I've had this pop up a few times. It's okay on apps that can be uninstalled because downloading them again solves the issue, but on built in apps such as these I'm not sure how to sort it.

Very frustrating as it looks horrible.

Edit: neither unpinning or toggling live tiles has any effect.

Edit: Example as it just happened to the News app. Left is when it's bugged, right is after the app has been uninstalled and downloaded again.

Transition between folders/tabs isn't as smooth as it was on 8.1. The same goes for scrolling websites.

Any solllution?

edit:

Welp, rebooting solved the problem. Now it's smooth as fuck.

Is anyone getting new email notifications from the Mail app (Gmail account)? For the first couple days, it worked about half the time. Now it doesn't work at all.

... Same issue. Using another user works, but.. eh..?

Ok guys, got my Win 10 installation.

Really impressed with how smooth everything is. I need to find out one thing though.

In windows 8.1 I could outright disable Windows Defender (not just turn off real-time protection, but outright disable it so it doesn't run at all), however the Defender settings are different now and I can only find the option to turn off Live protection, not disable Defender application entirely.

Can anyone please tell me how to do it in a way that doesn't involve installing another antivirus, i don't want one.

Same for cortana, how to i uninstall so it doesn't appear using resources in my task bar ?

Does anyone know how to get the project settings that were in charms in windows 8 back into windows 10?

And by project I mean switching of displays

just upgraded from win7 and everything was smooth except for a hard lock minutes after booting w10 for the first time

I hope anyone can help me:

Im planning on upgrading my pc to windows 10 (by doing a clean install) but i also have new GPU i want to install. I heard that your product key is tied to your hardware, esspecially the motherboard.

So can i create a bootable usb stick on my pc with windows 8.1 on it with the old gpu, and can i use that usb stick to install on the same system with only a new GPU? or will that void my activation?

http://superuser.com/questions/949569/can-i-completely-disable-cortana-on-windows-10

I wouldn't be surprised if this method led to problems with Windows Update in the future, though.

Just did your regedit thing and it worked :D
Windows Defender is gone from my taskbar.

The cortana thing looks a bit more risque so I guess i'll wait a while before something easier and less risky comes along. I'm annoyed at that ~50MB RAM footprint its taking but i'll have to live with it for now.

You'll have to disable the Defender action center notifications at some point, too. Just tap on the notification the next time you see it and you'll get an option to turn them off.

Anyone else emptied the start screen\menu of the default rubbish, and now can't add _anything_ to it? it's driving me mad.

Had an issue with my touchpad on my XPS 13 (L321X, pretty old model). Ended up finding a solution if anyone out there has one as well, I had to uninstall the synaptic driver and update using the Cypress drivers for the L322X 2.5.1.59.

Seems to be working well so far. Also I know this isn't the greatest touchpad in the world but it does seem to work better either with Win10 or this particular driver, I haven't changed the palm senstivity at all from default and it appears to not be accidentally detecting touchpad presses during typing.

What happens if you add a shortcut here?:

C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

EDIT: NM, that will only add an item to the All Apps menu. I'm not sure where the pins themselves are stored.

Okay, got another Problem. My wifi simply does not work. Installed new drivers, sometimes it works, but most other times especially after restarts. It is connected but I can not acess the internet, giving me an exclamation mark. Any ideas?

Anyone with multi screen monitors having an issue with their task bar on one of their additional screens not hiding?

I googled a fix and someone said to show search bar, then making it hidden again will fix it. It worked, but the issue seems to happen randomly whenever I wake the computer from sleep mode.

Only one bug so far but it is a pretty annoying one. None of my power settings do anything. Sleep, screen power off, etc. None of them take.

where is this Intel Control Panel? it seems I might have a problem with having a TV for a monitor later on

Maybe you can find it in the old school Control Panel, just right click the windows start button.

remember to select view icons(in the top right) so you can see everything in the control panel

Since upgrading to 10 (fresh install), some applications slow down the whole system. For example when compiling in Visual Studio, I can't even browse with Chrome because the whole system lags horribly. Task manager shows CPU usage at 100%. I've never experienced something like this under 8.1. Even with 100% CPU usage I would barely notice a difference. Anyone any ideas what could cause this?

Is there a way to remove apps from the "My Library" section of the Windows Store?

I don't want Candy Crush Saga or ASUS Welcome or any of that other shit taking up space. They are uninstalled but they are still in the damn list and there seems to be no way to remove them.

That's just the list of apps that you have on your account.

They aren't taking up space. If it has a little arrow that means that you have to download it to use it.

So I haven't received any Windows 10 icon yet. So I read some troubleshooting and they said make sure IE11 is installed but when I try Windows update it won't let me install IE11, always giving me a Code 9C59. So I looked up the code and one Method was to run System File Checker. So I run system file checker but it pauses at 37% all the time and then gives response "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation." I also tried to just to download and install IE11 but that install failed too.

Like WTF! Everything I am trying is borking out...any ideas, HALP?
