Windows 10 Troubleshooting Thread

GAF, all of a sudden my PC is EXTREMELY slow starting up Windows 10 (boot + getting past login) and for a few mins after logging in it takes forever for shit even on my taskbar to load.

Windows 10 has been fast all week, now all of a sudden it's slow as shit. It took me 15 minutes to go from boot screen, then I had a black desktop for a few mins with just a cursor, then another 5 mins for shit to even load on my taskbar, etc.

Anyone else experiencing this? It's just out of the blue. This is a fresh install, not even an upgrade.

After I give it all the time it wants to finish fucking around my PC runs optimally.

If I look in Event Viewer there is this (at time of startup)

The Sync Host_Session1 service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 1 time(s). The following corrective action will be taken in 10000 milliseconds: Restart the service.
The Contact Data_Session1 service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 1 time(s). The following corrective action will be taken in 10000 milliseconds: Restart the service.
The User Data Storage_Session1 service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 1 time(s). The following corrective action will be taken in 10000 milliseconds: Restart the service.
The User Data Access_Session1 service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 1 time(s). The following corrective action will be taken in 10000 milliseconds: Restart the service.
The server CortanaUI.AppXd4tad4d57t4wtdbnnmb8v2xtzym8c1n8.mca did not register with DCOM within the required timeout.

And I suspect this is what is causing the slowness.

I have googled these errors and people have the same issue but there's no resolution any where.

:(

I have those errors but everything's trucking along nicely. I don't think they're the cause of your troubles.

no idea if this came up yet but is there any chance to install quicktime when running windows 10? Using after effects a lot lateley and upgraded to windows 10 without informing myself enough. hope there is a solution.

My computer is not going to sleep properly. I suspected this when I woke up and my computer was still running. Verified it by setting my power settings to go to sleep after 1 minute, turn off monitor after 1 minute. Monitor turns off, computer doesn't go to sleep. Manual sleep works fine. Automatic sleep worked fine in Windows 7 and 8. I don't think it's entirely broken, because it's definitely gone to sleep a few times since I upgraded, but it's certainly not working consistently. Thought maybe it was an errant file share holding a file open so did a few reboots on the W10 machine, so I suspect it's not that.

I tried checking the event log and I can't find anything. I can find that no system events occurred overnight, which makes me think the computer was asleep, but I can't find any record of it going to sleep.

What's my next approach?

Wait for SR1 update.

why does my xbox app go semi transparent when I try dragging the window around the desktop? Can't figure out how to make it go back to normal

Anyone one else have the issue with your most used programs in the start menu not actually listing your most used programs?

Oh I see, I guess that stuff must be related to turning off privacy stuff.

But now my PC is fine again... it sorted itself out. I couldn't check what was causing disk usage (because it was 100% with like 30k ms access time and stuff) because it was so slow but I know it was being maxed out, I think it may have been a windows update or something doing something weird because I got a notification that an update was installed (for windows defender). I also check windows defender and for some reason it removed all my excluded folders I don't want it to scan (basically all my hard drives).

Now everything is fine again, it's pretty weird. Definitely not a hardware/hdd problem because it's not an issue if i dual boot to my Win7 installation.

No idea what caused it but it's fine now. I still have a black screen for a few seconds when I boot up windows before the login screen though.

So for the past few days my Win10 upgrade from Win7 has been stuck at "Notify me when the update is ready". My gf's laptop went through the process seamlessly with no delay and has been running without error since Sunday, but mine seems stuck. My windows update is all up to date. I tried the CMD command to jump start it, no go. I have two new directories on my C drive, WINDOWS.BT and a hidden WINDOWS.WS, both totalling a bit over 6GB of data, so it seems like it downloaded everything but somehow got stuck before initiating or something.

Maybe I'll try using the ISO from a USB stick tonight via the Media Creation Tool....

So um, my last resort was to use a Disk Check on start up and...."File record segment 87100 is unreadable", with multiple others following... :O

:/

Trying to upgrade a neighbors laptop using the media creation tool. When I select upgrade this PC it downloads Windows 10 just fine then, it moves onto the next step and when it reaches 100% the program just closes. It does nothing else. Anyone have this problem?

Okay, got another Problem. My wifi simply does not work. Installed new drivers, sometimes it works, but most other times especially after restarts. It is connected but I can not acess the internet, giving me an exclamation mark. Any ideas?

i had same issue. sorry though i cant help. everything worked basically fine until 2 days ago; then internet would work for a few seconds after immediately establishing a connection. tried all the usual tricks, including the tcp/ip reset. nothing made a difference. went back to win 7 and wifi worked immediately. staying with 7 for now.

So currently I'm getting this message in my upgrade app.

Should I just upgrade through the media creation tool anyway, or is it perhaps better to wait?

I got two questions if anyone could help.

A) Can I lock an app/exe w/e so only admin accounts can use it?

Basically I want to prevent my cousin from using steam unless an admin is there. His parents want it.

B) Is there a way to stop it from auto logging in on whoever was logged in before shutdown? It's super annoying for the family because the the person using the computer next is almost always different than the one before.

Is there a way to get it to always show the account select screen without having to put a password on every account?

Yeah, I just got home and my "Notify me when ready" screen now has that "more information" button too. When I click on that new button it gives me this option:

Upgrade anyway? Even though it's not recommended? Why wouldn't it be safe to upgrade my PC to Windows 10? I'm tempted to just click it....

So, after upgrading it sounds like my speakers are blown? They worked perfectly fine when I set the update this morning before heading off to work. Every single noise has the same booming explosion noise. Also, my screen will go from looking fantastic and slightly dark to brighter and washed out.

Does this have anything to do with my audio being Realtek HD Digital Audio??
Annnnd now all the sound is gone.

So....is there a way to make WOL works when PC is turned off? With W8.1 the alchemy was to turn on the bios settings related to that and turn off fast Boot in Windows. Here this doesn't work and I could not make it work in any way (just with sleep and maybe hibernate) :-(

Anyone know how to shut up apps like these?

Realtek HD Audio not giving me any problems after installing any updates here

Hm, interesting. Didn't realize there was an upgrade anyway option.

I guess MS kind of covers their ass in case one of the drivers has a problem with Windows 10. On the manufacturer website of my laptop it said that mine is good to go though, so I think I'll try my luck.

Edit: I'm currently updating all my old drivers to see if it makes a difference.

Ho boy. Do you have multiple monitors? It reset my configuration and showed a black screen on the only one I had turned on at the time.

I have the same issue. I've uninstalled my second monitor from every place I can think of in Windows i.e. Device Manager, Hidden devices in device manager, Hardware and devices, and I still get the blank screen on startup after the Win10 logo. I wonder if the video drivers (AMD) need to be completely cleaned out and installed again. Maybe there are remnants there.

Ironically enough, while I was sitting here contemplating pressing the "upgrade anyway at your own risk" button my Windows 10 download started and it's now installing the normal way. Looks like I'm installing Windows 10 tonight!

Is there a way to unisntall MS Paint on Windows 10, I cannot see the option on windows setup, there is WMP and IExplorer 11 check but no for Paint.
Thaks in advance.

Prompt has arrived to install W10 on my desktop. Whilst I'm interested in having a mess around with it (and I happened to back up all my files at the weekend), I'm not exactly in any rush.

On the whole would it be smart to hold off until SR1 if it is only a few days away?

I couldn't wait. I used the media tool on my desktop. downloaded it and ran it. Upgrade took about 30 minutes (50Mb connection). Went smoothly.

I got two BSOD today with the error IRLQ_UNEXPECTED_VALUE.

How do I check what might be the problem?
thinking.gif

What type of computer, laptop or desktop? Open Device manager in the hardware section and see if anything has a flag by it.

The IRQL_UNEXPECTED_VALUE bug check has a value of 0x000000C8. This indicates that the processor's IRQL is not what it should be at this time...

This error is usually caused by a device driver or another lower-level program that changed the IRQL for some period and did not restore the original IRQL at the end of that period. For example, the routine may have acquired a spin lock and failed to release it.

Have you restarted the computer since you got the message?

Windows Defender keeps telling me that I'm overdue for a scan even though I've already scanned my computer recently. Anyone else having that problem?

Try this: https://social.technet.microsoft.co...-by-active-remote-client?forum=w7itprogeneral

Run the DOS command

powercfg /requestsoverride driver srvnet system

as administrator.
Powercfg will still show the client requests but they will not prevent sleep.

I saw that, but this is definitely not what I want to do. The desktop is primarily a file server. It needs to be awake when the other devices in the house are accessing files. It just needs to go to sleep when they're not.

Windows Defender won't turn itself ON

options are even grayed out.
:/

i only have spybot/ccleaner and feel a bit naked, and had bad experience with AVG installing stuff i didn't want on other machines so don't wanna go back to that.

Last night I was able to play on my XB1 using my win 10 machine. Tonight, I can not connect. It tells me to make sure my system is on and on the same network (it is, nothing changed) Then sometimes the app crashes.

Any ideas?

It maybe a bit tricky. Have you tried wake-on-lan?

Wake-on-lan is turned on, but wouldn't solve the problem. If I tell the computer it's OK to go to sleep while someone is streaming, then it's just going to result in buffering every 15 minutes when the stream dies and the WOL packet needs to be sent and the fans need to be spun up again. I have really no idea why the computer won't just normally go to sleep in W10.

If I have to wait for a patch, I have to wait for a patch, but seems like a massive waste of electricity.

If anyone uses Killer Ethernet you will need to download the latest drivers, I neglected to do this myself and experienced a 98% memory leak after a few days of using Windows 10.

TBH, I don't think that's high on MS' priority list, after all, file servers are usually on 24X7. But modern computers are pretty good at power managing. With HDs spun down, a barebone system consumes, Idk, 30-40watts? Really not that "massive".

I could not use start button and couldn't use search or right click icons on the task bar. I had to do a rollback and it fixed it but I fear automatic updates is going to fuck it all up again.

I got this as well. I could use the media creation tool, I think I'll wait it out. I just hope that it doesn't take too long. Windows 7 hasn't treated me wrong so far so I'm not in a quick rush to get rid of it.

I'd love to see 10, though.

Anyone run into this issue and know of any way to fix it? I've done a number of searches here and there but found nothing. It's just ugly. Moving them around does nothing, they just pop back to this.

This should only apply to systems running AMD Radeon Graphics. I traced this issue to the drivers after uninstalling secondary monitors, updating to the latest drivers, and then finally running the AMD Driver Cleanup Utility to remove all AMD drivers. With all the drivers removed, startup was quick once again. However, once I installed the 15.7.1 drivers again the startup was back to being slow. Here is the AMD forum that talks about it.

https://community.amd.com/thread/184727

So there is one more piece to the puzzle. Ultra-Low Power State (ULPS) is causing the Black Screen and it needs to be disabled. Here are a couple links to explain how to disable it.

Disable ULPS via Registry - http://www.tomshardware.com/faq/id-1904869/disable-ulps-amd-crossfire-setups.html

Disable ULPS via Tool - http://www.overclock.net/t/1088266/ulps-gui-config-utility-enable-disable

From what I've researched ULPS is not necessary. It is just a power saving feature for when your GPUs are not in use. But nevertheless, hopefully AMD fixes their shit in another driver release soon. And remember by disabling it in the registry it will be permanently disabled even after new driver installations. I also had numerous locations in the registry to change it. I changed it on all of them.

fixed it by uninstalling spybot.

apparently windows defender turns itself OFF if there's another anti-virus installed. i don't think spybot counted since even in the security settings its classified as a spyware/adware program and NOT anti-virus.

will just ride with defender for now, might install spybot later on and see where it leads.

for you septimus prime, if you don't follow what i did and it might be a broken install, i would do this

1) press windows key + x

2) go down to "Command prompt (administrator)"

3) type in sfc /scannow

it will recheck integrity of all files
