Windows 10 Troubleshooting Thread

This issue is driving me insane, I take it when you switched back to your normal account it didn't fix it?

No, it didn't.
I also tried pasting over various parts of the user folder, like the files internet says store the pins - but didn't work.

Damn,

Thanks for saving me some time I was going to do that. I figured if I made a second account and copied was there to my user directory it would work. Argh I don't know what this issue can be, the way this is sounding we won't get a fix for it till SR1 or maybe not even then.

quick question: how do i turn off aero/preview on individual tabs? i can only find the option to disable it for the desktop view on the right of the task bar

This has been a mostly perfect upgrade, I was able to upgrade and fresh install while staying activated all in one try. But now hibernate doesn't work, it just shuts off and comes back on 2 minutes later, I have to figure out how to fix this since I use that everyday for years.

Another tiny but distracting problem is all the icons on the task-bar flickering once right when you empty the recycling bin.

Anyone run into this issue and know of any way to fix it? I've done a number of searches here and there but found nothing. It's just ugly. Moving them around does nothing, they just pop back to this.

Yep, I have the exact same problem on my AMD A8-5550M HP Pavilion Laptop. Posted a similar image back on page 157. I've tried damn near everything. Updated APU drivers, updated other drivers that were slightly out of date, manually ran Windows Update looking for any patches, recommended or optional. Nothing takes care of the issue. Edit: Except rebooting, but then they just shift back out of alignment randomly afterward later.

I posted about it to the Microsoft Community and the response I got was:
I suggest you to perform a SFC Scan. Refer to the link below for more information and check if this helps:

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...em-files/bc609315-da1f-4775-812c-695b60477a93

Also make sure that you’ve installed all the latest updates including the optional updates.

I've done this SFC scan multiple times and it didn't address the issue either. At this point, I'm fairly confident in saying it's a bug on Microsoft's side.

How do I rollback to Windows 8.1? During my installation, it said that I won't be able to boot as Windows 8.1 as I believe to have chosen the same partition.

Once you're done the upgrade and you pull out your product key, go to Settings - Update & Security - Recovery and then select Roll back to Windows 8.1. You only have 30 days from the install to do a roll back. This will set your system back to the Windows 8.1 install you had prior. Then with the product key, you can start a clean/custom install on the other partition.

Manage to do the upgrade today coming from Windows 7. Everything went perfect and got it up and running in no time. So far I'm liking it but I am having two minor issues. First, If I put the brightness below 70% on my laptop the screen will just go all black. Also, the netflix app closes a couple of seconds later after I open it for some weird reason.

I will do a clean install later on (which was part of the plan anyways) and hopefully it will fix those two issues. Apart of that, having a good time so far with it.

I was having a good experience with the upgrade until I started experiencing blue screen crashes. Decided to do a clean install since I was unable to pin point the issue and I hadn't done one in a long time anyway (upgraded from 7 to 8 to 10). Now, somehow, the media creation tool installed the 32-bit version of Windows 10 on my usb instead of the 64-bit and I'm going to have to go through the download and install process all over again. I hope it works this time.

My buddy is trying to set up Windows 10 on an SSD, with all his files (users and such) on his C: drive. He had it set up this way for Windows 7, but he's having a hell of a time getting this done on Windows 10.

Anyone know what I mean?

My computer is not going to sleep properly. I suspected this when I woke up and my computer was still running. Verified it by setting my power settings to go to sleep after 1 minute, turn off monitor after 1 minute. Monitor turns off, computer doesn't go to sleep. Manual sleep works fine. Automatic sleep worked fine in Windows 7 and 8. I don't think it's entirely broken, because it's definitely gone to sleep a few times since I upgraded, but it's certainly not working consistently. Thought maybe it was an errant file share holding a file open so did a few reboots on the W10 machine, so I suspect it's not that.

I tried checking the event log and I can't find anything. I can find that no system events occurred overnight, which makes me think the computer was asleep, but I can't find any record of it going to sleep.

What's my next approach?

Had the same issue.

I think I fixed it by removing all mapped network drives, including the ones I added under settings in the windows 10 photos and music apps.

I got this as well. I could use the media creation tool, I think I'll wait it out. I just hope that it doesn't take too long. Windows 7 hasn't treated me wrong so far so I'm not in a quick rush to get rid of it.

I'd love to see 10, though.

Its great I'm loving it so far. No issues! **knocks on wood**

I've been having problems trying to install Windows 10 on my Windows 7 machine. I still haven't had the windows 10 assistant thing (bottom right icon) come up. So I had a go at using the media creation tool.

As it was downloading my PC suddenly reset itself and now I cannot use the tool any more. It just tells me to reboot my PC which I have many time, and I've tried re downloading the tool.

All I want to do is set up a clean install of Windows 10 on my machine. I think I may have a problem with my memory (reset error) so I might go and buy a replacement soon.

I exhausted pretty much all the same options as well. I'm running an Intel based desktop computer, it has to be a bug on their part. Even though it's just a minor annoyance, it really took the wind out of my "let's really use this start menu!" kick I was on last night. Now we have to wait for them to fix it, I really don't know what else to do.

So I fibaly went ahead with installing win10 on my gaming PC ..

All works great then tried to go to YouTube watch some funny dumb shit and not a single video plays they all do the grey thing when videos don't play any idea how to fix it ?

I could not use start button and couldn't use search or right click icons on the task bar. I had to do a rollback and it fixed it but I fear automatic updates is going to fuck it all up again.

got same thing, restore point rollback worked but felt sketchy so did a refresh, keeping files... a little touch and go but back up. hope update doesn't screw it

Is anyone having with crackling speakers after updating? It's driving me nuts.

yep

fixed it by uninstalling spybot.

apparently windows defender turns itself OFF if there's another anti-virus installed. i don't think spybot counted since even in the security settings its classified as a spyware/adware program and NOT anti-virus.

will just ride with defender for now, might install spybot later on and see where it leads.

for you septimus prime, if you don't follow what i did and it might be a broken install, i would do this

1) press windows key + x

2) go down to "Command prompt (administrator)"

3) type in sfc /scannow

it will recheck integrity of all files
Thanks! Spybot was indeed the problem, so I uninstalled it for now, as well. Hopefully they will resolve it eventually, but I feel pretty confident rolling with Windows Defender and Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit for the time being.

I was about to pay for a premium license for Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, but I'm going to hold off on that now.

How long did that 'Preparing for the upgrade' screen take for people? Can't tell if it's stuck or just taking a long time.

couple of my friends have like 20 updates stuck in the store and edge won't even start.

any quick solutions before a complete reset?

This should only apply to systems running AMD Radeon Graphics. I traced this issue to the drivers after uninstalling secondary monitors, updating to the latest drivers, and then finally running the AMD Driver Cleanup Utility to remove all AMD drivers. With all the drivers removed, startup was quick once again. However, once I installed the 15.7.1 drivers again the startup was back to being slow. Here is the AMD forum that talks about it.

https://community.amd.com/thread/184727

So there is one more piece to the puzzle. Ultra-Low Power State (ULPS) is causing the Black Screen and it needs to be disabled. Here are a couple links to explain how to disable it.

Disable ULPS via Registry - http://www.tomshardware.com/faq/id-1904869/disable-ulps-amd-crossfire-setups.html

Disable ULPS via Tool - http://www.overclock.net/t/1088266/ulps-gui-config-utility-enable-disable

From what I've researched ULPS is not necessary. It is just a power saving feature for when your GPUs are not in use. But nevertheless, hopefully AMD fixes their shit in another driver release soon. And remember by disabling it in the registry it will be permanently disabled even after new driver installations. I also had numerous locations in the registry to change it. I changed it on all of them.

Had this issue on my old ASUS laptop when upgrading. Luckily I had Chrome Remote desktop running on it, so I was able to RDP into her and revert back to an older driver which didn't cause this issue.

I then reseted the installation which got rid off much of the bloatware...but the slow boot up is there.

Thank you for the post!

Nothing but issues with W10. Keeps freezing, crashing, bluescreening. I updated all my drivers, but Rocket League, Diablo 3 and even the normal desktop keep freezing and crashing.
Tool recommendation for removing ALL drivers and reinstalling them? Any other tips? My PC ran perfectly last week with 8.1, so it must be the new OS.

I've talked about this in one of the other threads, but I'll try this thread as well.

Ever since I've upgraded to Windows 10, whenever I start my laptop for the first time every day, it works fine for five-ish minutes, but then abruptly turns off (as in power goes off, screen goes black, as if out of nowhere). Then it boots itself back up and it's fine for the rest of the day.

I was having similar problems and had to remove my overclock to get it stable. After dusting out my cpu/fan and changing the thermal paste I still can't get a OC on W10 without temps going crazy/BSOD.

https://www.av-test.org/en/antivirus/home-windows/

Windows Defender scored a 0.5 / 6. By far, the worst antivirus software. Better, to use "smart browsing" which I wouldn't recommend either.

I don't really get how those scores are calculated. 0.5/6 makes it sound like it's absolutely useless, when in fact the June test shows it protects against 95% of widespread threats and 85% of 0-day attacks. Ok, so that's not great compared to some other AV software, but that score still seems misleading...?

Don't have any OC on my 2500k. Will check temps under load.

So my laptop display no longer shows anything. Just a black screen. However I can connect to an external monitor and everything works except that it cant detect my laptop display. Also, my wireless doesn't work.

Any tips?

Seeing as all the power settings are busted, I was hoping I could at least use Cortana to say, "hey Cortana, go to sleep" or something along those lines...but nope. What a worthless computer assistant. Calendar reminders and alarms are so pointless on a desktop, how about being able to do things like, "Cortana, extend desktop" "Cortana, turn of second screen" "Cortana, give me a new background" That shit would be fun and useful. I quickly disabled all Cortana integration and locked down all privacy. Unless you are going to give me functionality, I sure as shit aren't going to give you my user data.

I can't adjust my screen resolution after upgrading. I tried installing Nvidia drivers but the installation failed. I also can't install Nvidia GeForce Experience or even open my Nvidia Control Panel.

Does anyone know how to fix this issue?

EDIT: Nevermind it fixed itself after another restart.

So I got an alert saying my viruse software and definitions were out-of-date so I clicked it and Defender popped up. What? Anyway, I clicked the update button and nothing happened. Well, let me rephrase: the progress bar went to about 25% and got stuck and then after about 20-30 minutes (I wasn't paying attention but it wasn't quickly) it says that there's a connection error. What? I'm browsing the Internet and you say you have connection errors? I couldn't close the windwos either and had to do a hard stop with Ctrl-alt-delete.
