FINALLY got W10 reinstalled with an activated key ever since the whole Reset PC Fubar (BSOD + restart loop)

ended up having to find a download for W7 since my upgrade disc didn't work and since it didn't take my upgrade key i was happy that W8 can still be installed and i had the key from ages ago and it took. then W10 installed on top. hopefully no issue pops up later lol
 
My PC fans are going crazy just sitting on the desktop, louder than they normally are when I'm playing a graphically intense game. Why is it doing this?

Also, i'm pretty sure that after using 10 for a couple of minutes, that I will need to roll back to Windows 7. How easy is the process?

I reverted back to Windows 8.1 no problem, and I assume the same is true for Windows 7. Just go to your update and recovery settings and roll back to your previous version of Windows.

OK, I just did that, and it gave me a warning that I would have to re-install some programs. Do I need to worry about this?

I honestly can't remember if I got that message or not. I just know that I was able to go back to Windows 8.1 like nothing ever happened. I didn't have to reinstall anything.

That was just my experience, though. Maybe someone else can chime in as well?

Sounds like your administrative rights are out of wack after your install.

Have you tried making a new user account? The only time windows requests admin rights for saving is when you are saving on to a drive that you once used with a different windows install or when you are trying to access folders on a network you don't have rights to.

If you've backed up your most important files why not try a system refresh or a full refresh that removes all user data? It sounds like something during your upgrade was borked.
 
So I did a hardware change with skylake and now windows 10 won't activate when I did a clean install. Is there a fix to this? I'm gonna install 8.1 again with my key and then see if it can do a upgrade and stay activated.

I'm having a problem very similar to this as well. I upgraded from Win 7 and did a clean install as well, and even though I'm clearly labeled an administrator it keeps asking for confirmations. This has been interfering with using several of my programs which has been aggravating. I still haven't been able to figure out the issue.

Also on top of that my Apps like Windows Store and Netflix are immediately closing once I open them.
 
I just tried installing Windows 10 on my laptop and my screen has been flickering every second. It's not letting me run anything and it's making my laptop run louder than most games.

Edit: something called Antimalware Service Executable is using up all of my CPU but it won't let me close it.
 
My Ethernet connection randomly disconnects and I connect with my wifi. After an hour or so my ethernet will connect again.

I'm using an Asus laptop.
 
Does Windws key + Q actually bring up Cortana in voice command mode like it's listed for you?

Both it and Windows + S just do text for me. I'm trying to map it to a controller button, I'm testing out what kind of setups I can get working with DS4Windows.

I found that if I remove the Realtek drivers completely, I have audio! The problem is, everytime I restart my computer, they reinstall. Is there any way to block them from installing?
 
I've got the latest version of Norton Internet Security running on my laptop, but it constantly keeps asking me to update to a windows 10 compatible version, which it already is. I've tried un-installing, reinstalling and updating it but it keeps trying to download a new version which doesn't exist. It also places a shortcut to some installation files on my desktop and a norton downloader file.

I've already tried runnning and installing everything but it keeps asking me to upgrade. Anyone else run into this problem and managed to fix it? Sorta feel like removing norton from my laptop all together. Is the antivirus program already installed for win10 any good? I think its called windows defender. How does it compare?

Well something is damn wrong. Installed W7 again, let it update its 4000 updates (started from SP1...) then had to wait till the W10 update Window appeared > updated to W10 and checked that everything is activated and made even a MS Account. Like i said, W10 was properly activated. Then i did clean W10 install from the USB stick because the partitions where W10 was installed was wrong and now i still can't activate W10 with the same key i used for the upgrade. W T F.

So my only Option would be to do a clean W7 again (with right partitions) an upgrade to W10...

Is it maybe because the boot stick was created with the media creation tool but for "another PC" ? Should i use a W10 iso > Mount it on the stick and try again?

Edit: W10 says that my key is blocked: Errorcode: 0xC004C003
 
Updated to Windows 10 and it's been pretty good but I can't get regedit to work. Every time I try to launch it either through Windows + R or command prompt it throws up: "file system error -1073741819."

I upgraded from Windows 7 premium and I used the registry method to "push" the update, so it was definitely working before.

You can't activate using your W7 key. You just have to wait for it to automatically activate.

Microsoft released a tool yesterday that enables you to create installation media, an ISO image or USB files, so that you can use it to upgrade existing Windows systems or clean install Windows 10.

Users who run Windows 7 or Windows 8 currently will run into issues when they try to do a clean install as they are prompted for a product key during installation of the new operating system.

When they try to enter their Windows 7 or 8 product key, they will receive information that it is invalid and not accepted.

The issue here is that existing keys need to be converted to Windows 10 keys first before they can be used to activate a Windows 10 system.

So how do you achieve that?

According to Microsoft, you need to run an upgrade first on an existing system to convert the product key. Once you have done that, you may use the product key to do a clean install of Windows 10.

That's obviously not overly comfortable, considering that you spend time upgrading the system only to clean install Windows 10 afterwards.

There is no other solution for this at the time of writing. An online product key converter would be handy for this, or maybe even an option to call Microsoft and get the key converted as both options should take less time.

You are correct but a key is no longer required during install.

All you do is have the proper windows 10 version install image via USB or DVD and ignore the activation key prompts.

Once your system has booted into
Windows 10 for the first time make sure it's connected to the internet. It will automatically activate itself. Your keys for this upgrade are forever stored in the cloud for your system configuration.

Ok, so back to the long road ... damn These slow W7 Upgrades. At least i have a SSD which makes the restarts bearable.
 
Just to clarify, you have successfully upgraded from windows 7 to 10 and you want to reinstall 10 after wiping your partition? Then all you should have to do is just use your windows 10 upgrade media to do a clean install from bios boot. Don't sweat it when it prompts for keys.

Just make sure you're installing from the right image version whether it be pro or home 64 or 32 and you should be good to go.

I think others can vouch for me here.

I don't believe that's accurate. They even have a MS quote later on the page that seems to directly contradict it:

You don't use your old key, you just install and skip the key entry and it will automatically activate if you have upgraded to W10 on the same machine previously.

Yeah, but this is as good as a key as long as i can cleaninstall it as often as i want.

Well i know that i just have to skip the key part and i'm good.

Welp. I left for a few hours, came home, and found my sound not working again. I looked and found that Realtek was reinstalled. I uninstalled them again, but this time it didn't work.

Ugh!
 
Well that was annoying, W10 was unable to "update" my computer upon restart. It put my computer in a restart loop - restarted 5 fucking times.

Is there a way to make the PC stop restarting?

Also the restart somehow turned Defender on... again.

What I did was uninstall every audio device, deleting every driver along the way, restarted and upon restart it automatically scanned for new hardware. What's weird is that it then took another reinstall (and me having to manually set the default sound device in the sound manager) for it to finally be recognized.

Finally got the upgrade to work manually two days ago. The only updates I have in my history are KB3074678 and KB3074686.

Am I missing anything else?

edit: I should note I had to use the media tool to upgrade cause windows update failed everytime. Running the Windows Update Troubleshooter, it says I have the problem "Service registration is missing or corrupt", but it will say that every time.

I've seen it a few places so I'm assuming it's one of the default wallpapers in some regions. Not mine though...

I suggest using TeamViewer instead. I find it work better than Remote Assistance and it's cross platform. It also does a better job getting behind routers/firewalls/etc.
 
alright, this is a long ass thread so apologies if this has been brought up already....

since upgrading to W10, bringing up playback devices takes a number of attempts to open, and when it does... I cant switch devices. no matter what I click, it wont change. I have to restart the PC to get it to change. its a bit of a PITA!

I read somewhere about reinstalling sound drivers from the motherboard website, but the last they list is for W8.1. think that will be good enough or would I be better off going to realtek and getting the W10 version from there?

Also have an ASUS laptop, but no problem with ethernet here. Battery life is improved as well. Latop model is n550JK. Good work, MS.
 
Hey guys,

I did a clean install of Win10. I have used the media creation tool to make a 64bit Win10 Pro.

Installed it and see that I have 32bit Win10 Home. What the hell? Did it install a wrong version for anybody here?

I used the tool for 64bit Home, installed the correct version.
 
Anybody else getting a sound issue where any time a video is played, whether through a browser or a media player etc, the sound just jumps right up and only comes back down when you touch the main volume control slider. It's driving me nuts.

It's like it ignores the slider setting and plays the unscaled sound (the sound represented by the grey bar on the volume slider.
 
downloading apps in the Downloads and Install window in my Windows Store app just keeps on saying 0.0 MB out of 15 MB

basically it is just stuck there, I've tried disabling my firewall, but no go, it's driving me crazy
 
Is there a consistent way to get program shortcuts to appear in the Start Menu's "All Apps" view? I've pinned a bunch of programs to the start screen, but less than half of them appeared in "All Apps".

If it's the same as mine, after you uninstall them each time you need to go back into playback devices and set speakers as your default. But yeah it always reinstalls eventually :(

Instead of uninstalling, try reinstalling using the Have Disk option that's in device manager.
 
I'm having a really strange issue with my laptop (Lenovo Y510P). Every so often, it will jump up to 100% disk usage. It looks like the culprit processes are several Windows processes. This happens even when I'm doing nothing on the machine and no applications are running. When I'm actually running a program, it seems to spike up even more (if it's not happening at the time that I'm running the program). For example, it'll be running at a normal amount of usage, but if I start up a program and use it for a few minutes, the Performance Monitor shows it spiking from almost nothing to 100% and back down. Comparing this to my desktop, it never gets close to 100% usage.

The problem processes seem to be:

Windows Host Process (Rundll32)
Antimalware Service Executable (Windows Defender)
"System" process

It occasionally will die down for a short period of time, but will eventually go back up. I thought it may be some kind of malware, but Windows Defender didn't find anything after a Full Scan.

I'd appreciate any ideas.

How to temporarily prevent a Windows or driver update from reinstalling in Windows 10
Used this to stop Windows from reinstalling the Realtek driver.
Odd thing is after disabling the update, Windows went and reinstalled the driver anyways, but I rolled back the driver and left the Realtek software installed and now everything seems to be fine sound-wise.

Well, there is something that looks like this in advanced options. "Notify me about a need to schedule restarting" or something (my Win10Pro is not in English).

Okay, I have the most stupid problem. How do I make volume slider click when moved? I loved that in Windows 7... was I the only one?
 
My brother updated from Win7 Ultimate to Windows 10, but didn't get the free DVD-Player App. We started Windows Update and restarts, but he didn't get it. Any way to trigger that?

This is a time where I'm kicking myself for not backing up some files I should have. I'm probably just going to have to reinstall windows 7. I guess I could let it go for a few more hours and see how it turns out. All because of that damn automatic repair loop.

It's a known issue that happens if you have more than 512 entries, supposedly a fix is coming but nothing has been released yet (it wasn't on the SR1 at least).
Keep an eye on this thread.
 
Quick question since I can't seem to find this out.

There is a notification sound of some sort that beeps every so often (and when I check the notification box thing, it shows nothing)

The noise is really annoying and I can't find out how to turn it off. :/
