Windows 10 Troubleshooting Thread

I have some programs I'd like to install, but Windows stops me and says that they're not compatible with Windows 10.

The thing is I don't care. I need them installed anyway. Surely things have not changed so drastically.

How can I regain control of my PC?

Run the installer from the cmd prompt that's been open as admin.

Install them in virtualbox then run it in seamless mode.

Something has been bothering me for a while. I updated my graphics card driver (AMD 6770M, plus Intel HD 3000 from switchable graphics), directly from AMD's site. Since then sometimes the computer freezes for a few seconds to a minute, not completely, because music keeps on playing, but no input works. Now the thing is, that the update changed the switchable graphics options from fixed (one card for everything) to dynamic (per-app basis), so I imagine that this happens when I close an app that used the 6770M and it returns to the Intel HD, because generally that's what's happen (sometimes it freezes out of the blue, sometimes when I close a "High-Performance" app it don't freeze). And I can't go back to fixed because the option to switch it in the BIOS disappeared (I could get it back with a custom BIOS, but that's a no-no to me). So I thought of going back to the drivers I were using before. But I can't. Windows automatically installs the latest driver, even if I mark "also delete the driver" when uninstalling the driver from the Device Manager. I completely uninstall everything and restart my PC, I run the old driver installer but midway it tells me there is another install running and it fails. So frustrating. No idea what I can do now.

Windows keeps a history of drivers installed.

Switch back to the old driver using update driver, browse my computer for driver software, and let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer. The old driver should be there. Windows won't bother to reinstall the latest driver until another one comes through.

Where can I get more information about errors that prevent installs?

0xC1900101 - 0x20004
The installation failed in SAFE_OS phase with an error during INSTALL_RECOVERY_ENVIRONMENT operation

I received that one.

This is the shitties update experience I've had with Windows.

I'm right there with you, same error, stalls at ~25% every time.

I've tried upgrading from Win 8.1 Pro at least a dozen times now. Tried a fresh installation of Windows 10 Pro and it worked the first time, but that's not a valid way to get a genuine, activated copy of Windows 10. So frustrating.

Anyone reading: Can you (fresh?) install a Windows Insiders build of Windows 10, then opt out to a genuine retail build of Windows 10 if you started from Windows 8.1? This is the only path I can think of that could fix all of this...

Thanks.

Doesn't your advanced option include startup settings? safe mode is inside.
image151.png

Opening that Start Up settings thing gives me nothing but a restart button which just starts the loop again. At no point am I able to input 4 or F4 to get Safe Mode going.

I meant specifically F8 and shift+F8 key combinations won't work to get you into the boot menu.
If you make a startup disk, then you should be able to get into the startup options and follow the steps for #2 to get into safe mode. You might need to be IN windows to do that though.

I'm pretty close to smahing my computer up this is getting beyond frustrating now. It shouldn't be this hard for me to just boot into safe mode and delete a borked driver. I'm eishing I hadn't upgraded to 10 -.-

Yeah, I've done a clean install after I upgraded but I figured something was saved in that Microsoft recovery partition to let it know who I am. That wouldn't be available if I buy a new drive. And I think I have to because mine is about to give out.

Your windows key is embedded into the motherboard if you didn't build it yourself, that's how most Windows installs activate these days.

I managed to do god knows what with command prompts and after like 5 restarts it is finally letting me Reset the PC but only by deleting all my files.

This is by far the most frustrating issue I've had with my pc.

OMFG scratch that.. It just came up with an error after 4% resetting.. Screw you Windows 10!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Im having a problem that seems to affect many older games. Games I've bought from GOG. The mouse cursor lags, flickers and disappears when I move it, making playing the games impossible. I've tried playing everything from the first Wing Commander to the fairly recent Amnesia a Machine for Pigs. For some reason I can play Fallout 2 without any problems.

Any ideas?

It isn't fun, fingers crossed you have a smooth sail.

Currently having issues with .dll files not existing which is screwing up a bunch of programs on my D drive...

Oh yeah, did I mention I had to resort to downloading Windows 10 to a disc from a different PC so I could just straight up wipe my PC QQ

For some reason my computer will turn on by itself after updating to Windows 10.

Any fix to this? It never did this on Windows 7

It did it to me on Windows 8 and 10 as well. Is this from sleep? I made a post a few pages back about this. For me, I checked event viewer and it turned out to be the clock sync that was waking the computer. I also make sure to disable any hardware from waking the computer (besides the power switch, of course).

If it's the clock sync then read this:
http://www.eightforums.com/general-support/32450-computer-wakes-3-14-am-sync-hardware-clock.html

Otherwise, the event viewer will tell you what the problem is and you can take it from there.

Do you have SmartScreen enabled? Turn it off. It's in the Control Panel>System and Security>Security and Maintenance

I just installed Windows 10 on my crappy AMD laptop. Generally speaking it performs better than 8.1, however, there is a very strange issue I'm encountering when booting into Windows 10.

If I shut down and turn it back on, Windows loads very fast (for this laptop, at least).

If I restart, it takes FOREVER. It hangs before I get to the lock screen for what is a completely unacceptable period of time.

Does anyone know why this happens?

Calculator also has an annoying boot up time where as on windows 7 and 8 it was instant, I have a key on my keyboard to bring it up instantly but in windows 10 I have to let to boot up every time and it's easily 5+ seconds before I can even see the calculator buttons appear.

I have the same thing on all the machines in my home, from my windows 10 tablet to my main pc, restarting takes ages while a power down and turning it on again is easily twice as fast if not quicker.

Hope they sort this out at some point.

So I followed the guide from the Windows 10 OT with all the privacy options (here), and now I'm finding that I can't pin/unpin things to my start menu without restarting the computer. As in, I'll pin a program to it, but it won't actually show up on my start menu until the computer has restarted.

Anyone else had this problem?

If your games are using Dosbox you can try pressing CTRL-F10 to release and recapture the mouse while in game.

You can also try uninstalling your mouse from device manager, unplug it and then plug it back in too see if it fixes anything.

If your using any third-party program that came with the mouse (e.g. steelseries engine, Razer synapse etc.) try exiting or disabling it and see if you still have the problem.

0xC1900101 - 0x20004
The installation failed in SAFE_OS phase with an error during INSTALL_RECOVERY_ENVIRONMENT operation

This is the shitties update experience I've had with Windows.

I ended up getting through this problem after a lot of troubleshooting. All of the common fixes from searching (unpluging SATA drives, peripherals, change hard disk to 'basic', etc.) didn't work for me. Not sure what kind of system you're using, but for me it was a Dell laptop.

Here's what ended up working. Not sure if it's something specific from this, or a combination of everything, but here was my process:

Have two USB thumb drives prepared, both for your original OS (for me, Windows 8.1 Pro) and the matching Windows 10 edition per the upgrade path (create a USB thumb drive, with option that says "for another PC" I believe, using the "media creation tool" from Microsoft. For me it was Windows 10 Pro 64-bit). If you don't have a USB install prepared for your original OS, check Microsoft's site for a tool.

-Boot up your BIOS, find a setting that resets it to default settings. After this, disable every piece of hardware you can that is not needed to install Windows (for me, I was able to disable wi-fi, LAN, bluetooth, media card reader, wi-fi switch, etc.) You'll need to keep the USB ports enabled for the Windows installations.

-Set your BIOs to one-time boot from USB, with your original OS (8.1, in my case) plugged in to install via USB thumb drive.

-When prompted during installation, choose custom and delete every partition until you have one blank Disc 0 with all unallocated space. This could very well be what was causing the error for me, as I had an OEM partition and Dell recovery partition which could have been causing conflicts during the Windows 10 installation.

-Install the original OS (again for me, 8.1) on the completely wiped hard drive. Complete installation with default settings when prompted, again, while all of your unnecessary hardware is disabled in BIOS.

-Once you reach the desktop, you can now plug in your USB drive with Windows 10 install prepared. Open the thumb drive File Explorer, and run "Setup" by right clicking and running as administrator.

For me, it ended up saying my Windows 8.1 was not yet activated and thus required a Windows 10 key to continue the installation, so I had to go back to BIOS to enable my wi-fi, go back to the 8.1 desktop and connect to the internet and verify that it activated my 8.1 key in System.

Windows 8.1 prompts different settings on installation if you have wi-fi enabled, so this may be a necessary diversion for you to make. As soon as you see the OS is activated, go back to BIOS and disable your wi-fi. You don't want Windows installing updates and drivers automatically before attempting your Windows 10 installation.

-Back at the desktop with an activated Windows 8.1 license, wi-fi now disabled in BIOS, start the Windows 10 installation on USB per the directions above. You should not be prompted for a key after the previous steps. The install will then prompt you whether or not you want to "check for updates (recommended)". Say no. After this, it will ask if you want to keep files and settings. Change this setting to keep nothing. Installation will continue.

-As soon as the installation reaches its first reboot, remove the USB thumb drive during your BIOS boot up phase. It's no longer needed after the initial installation phase, and reading on Google, it could possibly interfere as the Windows 10 installation continues.

With a combination of all of this, some possibly being completely unnecessary (believe me, I had been trying a lot of stuff to make this work so I want to be specific for anyone reading), it made it past the 25% threshold and installed without a problem! Once Windows 10 boots up, you'll need to go back to BIOS and reenable everything you had disabled (especially wi-fi, as it will not activate Windows 10 until it touches the internet).

I hope this helps anyone reading out there, as I know your pain and wanted to take the time to help out...haha. Good luck.

This is from a fresh install, right?

Originally just upgraded from Windows 8.1, which was a fresh install as of a month ago.

Yesterday to fix the never ending repair loop I had to do a fresh install of Windows 10 and wipe the C drive entirely and start anew.

Things are looking alright now, just a pain reinstalling everything.

Has anyone found a solution to the screen not turning off and sleep not activating after the set durations?

Wow I was just about to write a post hoping for a fix to this problem. I am glad it's a known issue, so we might see it resolved in the near future.

I always have a 15 minute idle timer before my PC kicks into hibernation mode. It worked perfectly with windows 7, but after I upgraded to 10 it refuses to go sleep. It's really annoying and just sours my initially great first impression of the OS. I really hope we'll get a solution for it soon, cause now it's just wasting electricity and wearing my PC down.

I am also pissed that my old trusty Inspiron Desktop PC I use for TV/Movies will not have ATI catalyst drivers for windows 10 because the graphic card is the 4200 series. I hope we will get a stable workaround for that soon.

Thanks for the tips. Can't seem to figure out how to uninstall/reinstall mouse drivers though. The options seem to be greyed out.

Not sure if someone here might be able to help as I don't think there's anything that can be done, but might as well ask! I upgraded a netbook from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 and all seemed to be going smoothly (update was in the process of installing), however, something went wrong and the netbook is now attempting to recover the Windows 8.1 install and stop the Windows 10 install, but it is stuck in a loop. The netbook boots, displays the 'attempting to recover Windows 8.1' screen for a second or two, and then turns itself off and the process repeats endlessly.

I have been unable to access the BIOS and there is no disc drive on the netbook so I am not able to complete a fresh/clean install of windows. Does anyone have any ideas as to how I can get around this issue? Google and the internet have failed me so far. Many thanks in advance!

Hoping for some help: In the middle of the setup (right after I created a new microsoft account with a gmail) it brought me to an Office 365 login screen where it's asking for a school/work email saying "microsoft or personal accounts will not work" when I try the new microsoft one. No clue what I'm missing here because it's not letting me skip or say I don't have one, and I'm afraid to restart in the middle of configuration.

I asked this in the other thread, but ill put it here if anyone can help.

If i go back to windows 8.1, could i quickly upgrade to windows 10 in the future?

anybody else having horrible Surface 3 battery life since going to windows 10?

any ideas how to fix or are we waiting for firmware patches?

Upgraded to Windows 10, worked fine. Reset before giving it to a family member - INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE (on loop).

I've downloaded the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool on my Windows 8 Surface (17.3 MB),, but it won't run. Error message: 'setup couldn't start properly'. Asks me to restart, which in turn does fuck all. Any help?

Problem solved: I'd downloaded the 32-bit tool (because I wanted to fix a 32-bit machine), when what I needed to do instead was download the 64-bit tool. There's an option there to create a bootable drive for another machine (32 or 64-bit). Hope this helps some poor soul in the future.

I tried reading back a couple of pages but can't see this mentioned...

Just updated this afternoon, seemed fine but my desktop is empty. Not *gone*, because I can find all my icons and folders in the windows explorer view, but the actual desktop is blank no matter how many times I restart explorer.exe or try other things. What the hell?!

There was an issue late last year that sounded familiar with the preview builds, but the fix is no longer available (and presumably it's already incorporated into the release) and nothing seems to work. So frustrating!

What does right clicking on desktop show you under view -> show desktop icons (last option)?

What does right clicking on desktop show you under view -> show desktop icons (last option)?

Those options ('Arrange by' except the size options, 'Sort by', and 'Organize') were all greyed out, and "Hide desktop icons" didn't appear at all, but all the other right click options were normal..

... BUT the last (fourth?) reboot seems to have fixed it! I also changed the desktop icons to "large" before I rebooted, and sure enough they popped up big as hell. Not sure if that was a coincidence or not, I did like 10 things in addition to that before the last reboot.

Thanks for replying :)

A couple days ago Windows Update automatically fetched the latest Radeon R7 200 Series drivers. After it finished, I noticed that it seemed to have completely removed Catalyst Control Center from my PC, so I went to the website and downloaded the driver pack manually and installed everything except the Gaming Evolved App.

Since then, it seems like once a day while just using Chrome (nothing more graphically intense than Facebook) my video will stutter for a moment, flicker off a couple times, then I'll get exactly 3 notifications in a row saying my display driver stopped responding and has recovered.

When this happens I restart and everything seems fine until a day or two later when it'll happen again. It wasn't happening before Windows Update fetched the new drivers for me.

Anyone else having issues like this?

It seems like every other person is having problems with display drivers. I'm not sure if you can "opt out" of certain updates, but you can always roll back your drivers and I think you can download CCC from the AMD website.

Are there any fixes for the absmal Surface Pro 2 battery issues yet? School has started back up and it's nearly impossible to use in class anymore as the battery life barely lasts two hours at 25% brightness and all of my classes are at least 90 minutes if not three hours long.

Really frustrating and I'd think it was the battery itself if not for others who have said they're experiencing similar issues.

Ever since installing Windows 10 I've had this issue where the memory usage for the "System" process goes up to 99% for the whole computer, it causes audio to freak out and really slows the whole computer down entirely. Restarting the computer fixes it though it can sometimes happen a few times in a row, and sometimes once a week.

Anyone heard of this issue before and if so a way to fix it permanently?

It's a memory leak of some kind but i need help identifying which driver is causing it.

Windows 10 Pro 64bit.
8GB RAM.
AMD R9 290 (latest drivers)
Intel core i5- 4670k 3.40GHZ
Motherboard: MSI Z87 GD65 Gaming

Roll back man, it's a no-brainer. You can re-update later, when it's ready.
