Windows 10 Troubleshooting Thread

Guys i have 2 problems:

1)I usually hibernate the notebook, but at night it "wakes up" like it's on suspend mode(blinking lights and mouse)
in before "give it sleeping pills"
. I thought that maybe i close the notebook too early so it enters in suspension mode before finishing the hibernation, but if so then why everything is turned off like it's on hibernation?

2)I'm not the "social network" kind of guy, i like my privacy so i used to deactivate camera and microphone, but when i try after a while they are active again, i try with the unistallation and again they are installed and active again after a while.

What to do?

Something strange happened.

I put my PC to sleep and then a few hours later I woke it up to it saying "we're setting things up for you" and then "this wont take long" screens.

Once I got back to my desktop, in the bottom right it now says "Windows 10 Insider Preview. Evaluation copy. Build 10532."

Isn't this an old build? I have no idea why this has happened.

Edit: Just saw it's a build from August 27. I think I was just confused because it has put the watermark in the bottom right of the desktop and I wasn't expecting it.

First one is what think is happening. Closing the notebook too early will make it go into a sleep state. thats why you want to wait until the light and system are completely off until you close it, or dont close it at all.

Second one.... you might want to try and update your drivers. Haven't run into that problem.

What I've actually done is to make it so that closing my lid does nothing. If you don't mind having to press the power button to sleep or having to click it from the start menu then you can do that.

Hey guys I have been having problems with Nvidia drivers on Windows 10 so I thought I would ask here about it since it seems like I am not alone :P

I am trying to install the latest Nvidia driver (355.82) through GeForce and I am getting this error:

Installation cannot continue
"This NVIDIA graphics driver is not compatible with this version of windows"

"This graphics driver could not find compatible graphics hardware"

Any tips on how to get around this issue? Graphics card is 970m

Have you tried just downloading it from the website and installing it? If you're installing it from GEforce experience that is.

If you aren't, when you go into Device Manager, does it show your GPU or something like Basic Display Driver?

Oh yeah I did that just now and the driver updated without issue! Now I feel dumb but I thought from the error I got that it must be something else

I have built a brand new system that has only USB 3.0 ports.
Windows 7 is notorious for having problems installing over USB 3.0.

I have a special M.2 based SSD (Samsung SM951).
The workaround to make this bootable involves USB installing Windows...

Is there a way for me to directly install Windows 10 without going through the hoops of installing Win 7 -> Upgrade to Win 10 -> Fresh install Win 10 ?

I have made a Win10 USB installer but I will be slapped with a product-key demand at some point?
I own Win 7 ultimate w/ retail key (dvd).

EDIT: Actually seem to have a found a guide that has saved me. A lot of BIOS steps (Asus Maximus VIII) but I'm now installing Win7 (from DVD) onto my SM951:
https://rog.asus.com/forum/showthre...om-you-m-2-SM-951-on-Asus-Maximuss-VIII-guide

2nd edit: Forgot to mention that I had to install the latest BIOS update as well to get all this going.

Thank you guys :)
About the devices i just deactivated the "devices installation service"(or something similar), we'll see if it's the solution.

So, is anyone else having the Xbox app freak out and max out a CPU while becoming highly unresponsive? I see a couple of complaints when I google, nothing remotely resembling a fix. I need my Xbox app, but I can't have it doing that. I guess the old 'xbox one' app isn't the same, so maybe I can uninstall the new app and just use that. But I kind of want to try using the streaming feature to record full 60fps gameplays occasionally.

Also, seems very strange but when I press start and search on something, sometimes it doesn't find my applications. Yesterday it wouldn't find winscp at all. This is all stuff that is in my "Start Menu->Programs" hierarchy.

Need some advice guys, my laptop Im using right now is a Intel Pentium M 1.73ghz and has 2gb RAM. Is it best I stick with Windows XP upgrade to Windows 10, what will the performance be like?

Terrible. There is a serious issue with some pc's with windows 10 having memory problems. Supposely there is DYI solution online but even then, i dont think 2 gig rams are gonna cut it.

I seem to be having bluescreens happen way to often and I'm not sure why
BlueScreenView seems to always say that ntoskrnl.exe is the problem. Is there anything I can do that doesn't involve reinstallation?
Here's what BlueScreenView says if that's at all helpful

Try running the windows memory diagnostic program or any other memory checker you feel comfortable with (Search > type windows memory > open windows memory diagnostic > restart now and check for problems) if it finds problems it's most likely your ram that's causing the blue screens.

You may also want to check that all your drivers are up to date; especially your chipset drivers

Hey guys. I've got an issue that's making me pull out my hair. I've also posted it on Microsoft's forums as well. But you guys have more brain power ;)

So I recently bought a Nextbook Flexx 11. It's a Bay Trail Atom processor 2 in 1 tablet with 2 gigs of RAM. It only has 64 gigs, less with OS, of storage so I purchased a 2TB Seagate Backup Plus Slim USB 3.0 to beef up on the storage.

The tablet itself has one micro usb port. I tried using an OTG cable to connect the drive to the tablet that way. The drive blinks and isn't detected. I'm sure that's due to it not having enough power to the drive. That is fine.

The keyboard dock has two USB ports. They both are USB 2.0. When I plug the drive into those ports I get the notification sound that something was connected. It shows up in connected devices. However its not accessible from devices and drives.

I went to Devices & Printers and ran a troubleshoot on the device and I got no errors. It says that the device is working properly. I tried to go to Disk Management to see if I need to assign it a letter manually, however it doesn't show up there either.

Thumb drives work fine in the ports. I have a 64GB micro sd in the card slot and it reads fine. I plugged the Backup Slim into my Windows 10 desktop and my Xbox One and its detected and read just fine.

I've posted screenshots so you can have a visual aid. Any help or suggestions would rock :)

It's most likely not getting enough power, if you have one try plugging it into a powered USB hub and then connect it to your 2-in-1 Tablet.

That's one of the thing's I've thought of as well. Ah well here to Amazon I go! Wife wanted me to order some stuff. I'll get one and report the findings!

Edit: Herm.... actually I had a powered hub around the house. Also the OTG cable has an input for power as well. This time the drive gets recognized via the USB Micro but same deal, no drive even though it's in my devices. In addition with the powered hub I get the same issue in the usb port, it sees the drive, the drive light is on, but its not accessible in the drives.

Edit edit: Okay this is some weird shit. While I was upating this post the system crapped out and my folders crashed and then when it came back up the drive appeared! Voodoo as shit but I guess it was installing drivers? Hahaha weeeeeee!

I have an ASUS Blu-ray drive (3S-ASUS BW-12 B1ST).

It was working fine in Windows 7, but Windows 10 doesn't even recognize it. I did the free upgrade, and its pretty much the only thing not working. ASUS has not yet made any Win 10 specific drivers).

i didn't see anything on a search of the thread.

Any suggestions on how to proceed?

Actually found the solution. Needed to make a registry edit:

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us...s/3b27544e-cc01-4330-bad4-a0834d3c7971?auth=1

Right-click the Start button > Command Prompt (Admin)

Then, at the command prompt type the following ( you can copy and paste) and press "Enter":

reg.exe add "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi\Controller0" /f /v EnumDevice1 /t REG_DWORD /d 0x00000001

Restart the computer.

I'm having a weird issue with my desktop wallpaper, when I view the image it's crystal clear, but when I make it my desktop the lettering gets that fuzz around it, like it has been compressed badly into BMP. The image is 1920x1080 like my monitor and it's not being stretched.

I've just noticed this as well with mine, but it's just not very noticeable on my computer. I think it has something to do with anti-aliasing settings somewhere, but a google search has not revealed the answer.

Does anyone else have a problem with the Action Center being turned off and not receiving new notifications. It displays a circle with a dash through it on the Icon and says "No New Notifications (Off)". I can't seem to find the setting to turn it on.

Anyone have weird memory usage even after fixing the system/ntoskrnl.exe issues? My comp is showing 10gb/16gb in use, but the listed values in commit and the working set are closer to 4gb in total. Not sure what to do without rammap, and when I went looking for a leak using poolmon to fix ntoskrnl.exe no signle driver stuck out as a culprit.

I (re)installed Nvidia drivers on my Thinkpad Yoga 15 laptop and now some text DPI is messed up or changed from before when I just used integrated graphics. Examples - my desktop icons' text is smaller (no change to the icons), the address bar in Chrome is much bigger, there doesn't seem to be high-DPI scaling anymore in Chrome, and text on Wikipedia is bigger. Another bug for Nvidia?

Edit: rebooting fixed it

I'm sure it's somewhere in this thread, but I can't seem to find it...but does anyone have a solution for Action Center items not being interactive? Clicking them gets me nothing on my desktop PC. Whereas on my Surface Pro 2, it opens the email or alert or whatever with no issues.

Having similar issues with a drive so I unplugged it as I don't need it right now.

But my biggest issue is with two displays, one HDMI (TV in another room) and one monitor (DVI) in that the wallpaper flickers between stretch and crop non stop.

I upgraded from Windows 7 to Widows 10 a few moments ago but my administrator account is not showing in the login screen, only the user account and an old local account with an unknown password, any idea of how to recover the missing account or recover that local account password?

I have installed Windows 10 on a brand new PC and it seems to be having some issues.

PC feels really sluggish and and slow at times, plus the disk usage in the Task Manager often goes to 100%

Any idea what might cause this?

This is really frustrating me. I'm getting weird stutters/freezes in certain games in Windows 10.

I haven't noticed it in more taxing games like The Witcher 3, but I've been playing Dota 2 a lot recently and every 15 seconds or so it just stops for a second. Never had this issue before. My rig can run most big games at max settings so it is nothing to do with hardware. Might dial back my NVIDIA driver to a slightly older one?

Anyone else had this issue?

I'm getting a critical error because my start bar and cortana aren't starting properly... I've restarted my computer several times and it keeps doing it. I googled it and tried a fix from youtube, well, I started to at least and got annoyed. Is there a simple way to fix this, it's pretty fucking annoying and I don't even think I can attempt a windows update with out going through the start bar.

Apologies if this has been asked trillions of times before in this thread - but does anyone have a fix for YouTube videos taking forever to load? Researched the issue the other night and I read that it might be incompatible graphics drivers so I switched Opera and Firefox over to Software Rendering by disabling "Use Hardware Acceleration when Available" and that shit worked - temporarily. Now it's back to the videos taking ages to load and I can't understand why. Microsoft seem to have several fixes on their forums and none of them seem to be working.

Is there a quick fix to this issue out yet? Also I had no problem whatsoever on Windows 8.1. Like ever. It's only since I upgraded to 10. Anyone?

EDIT: Fixed! This shit worked: http://www.rbrussell.com/2015/02/25/possible-fix-windows-10-running-very-slow/

Just thought I'd update my post for anyone who might be having the same issue. Also I've rebooted numerous times now checking this shit constantly and it's definitely fixed now. Everything actually runs faster now from iTunes to loading video files. I highly recommend that everyone do this. Hope this helps!

I am honestly tempted to go back to 7 with an old license. This is getting ridiculous.
I've had Windows 10 since August and it's been crashing the first time I boot up the laptop and crashing in Sleep Mode.

The steps I have taken to try rectify this issue:

- I uninstalled the graphic drivers that were added by Windows automatically through updates and grabbed the drivers from the Dell website. Still crashing on startup.
- Thinking it was something I did in the registry, I rolled back changes that were made to before I made any edits. Still crashing on the first boot and in sleep mode.
- Tried narrowing down changes I made to the registry.
- Thinking it was Start10/StartIsBack, I uninstalled those and just used the Start Menu by Microsoft. Still crashing on startup and sleep mode.
- Did several fresh installs.

I am using a Dell Inspiron 5720 with 8GB ram and an SSD. I never experienced any of these issues when using Windows 7.

The white colour scheme for File Explorer is fucking hideous as well. >:(

What happens on your crashes exactly?

What happens on your crashes exactly?

The screen freezes up.

When booting it gets to the logon screen but freezes when the progress circle is spinning, and when coming out of sleep mode I can't move the cursor.

I've tried waiting for a bit to see if it'll start working but it never does. I always have to force a shutdown to get it working again.

Edit - I should also note I have a NVIDIA GeForce GT 630M graphics card in my laptop on top of the integrated graphics card.

How immediate is the crash after the boot? If you have time to do stuff open your Task Manager and check if Microsoft Software Protection Platform Service (sppsvc.exe) is using 30% or more of your CPU.

On the boot it happens a second after the logon screen and progress circle appears. When coming out of sleep mode it is immediate and I don't have time to do check what might be causing it.

For anyone having micro stutters or freezing in games like Dota 2 on Windows 10, I found the solution on Reddit. It is caused by Windows Defender periodically scanning your drive. This fixed it for me at least.

  1. Go to Start
  2. -> Settings
  3. -> Update and Security
  4. -> Windows Defender
  5. -> Exclusion -> Add an Exclusion
  6. -> Exclude a Folder

ADD THE ENTIRE STEAM DIRECTORY HERE.

Hopefully that should fix it.

I have a small problem with the Windows Store portion of the Windows 10. I can't seem to update any of the aps from the Start menu on my PC, despite having that option on my laptop.

Store app doesn't seem to have the download updates option from the higher red box, that I had on my laptop. And in the option menu, inside the bottom red box, I can try to find them there, but button that's inside doesn't seem to do anything...

This is another thing really getting on my nerves.

My computer keeps coming out of sleep mode on its own for no reason...

I have a HDMI set up to my TV on an HDMI splitter so every time it does it (I'm usually on my PS4) it takes over the damn TV. Irritating as hell. STAY ASLEEP!

Guys, anyone read and hear about similar issue?

From time to time my sound freezes for a second, its only sound, game or video is still playing fine, but just sound cuts off for a second and then it switches on again.

I tried to reinstall Realtek driver with newest from their site, i tried to change sound quality in Win10 settings, but no luck.

No, but mine still refuses to output sound through display port.

Oh my god. This piece of shit pushed through an Nvidia driver update again, even though I downloaded the stupid tool to prevent Windows Update from installing GTX 460 and GTX 770 drivers. Once again breaking my triple monitor setup so that I have to go back to drivers from like March. This shit is getting really old.

Halp guys I get random hardlocks whenever I don't turn my monitor off when I leave my computer. I turned power saving off for stuff like the LAN and the monitor, but it still hardlocks, what do?

In the meantime I found that straight up turning the monitor off makes it go away so that's good enough but still, it's annoying when you take a dump and come back to a frozen computer.

And are there any tools that allow me to change font colour and titlebar colour? I want the sexy accent colour on every window, but every workaround I've found for this changes the taskbar font to black, so can't read shit because I have a dark accent colour

You don't even need to download a tool for that. There's literally a setting in Windows 10 that prevents it from downloading drivers.

Go to the Control Panel (the real one), then enter System -> System Properties -> Hardware tab. Then click Device Installation Settings. From there just click "No let me choose" etc. Then you can finally check the "Never install drivers through Windows Update" box.
