Windows 11 Now Available

Hopefully it's better than 10, because 10 is a piece of shit. Just this weekend I had to deal with Microsoft Store deleting itself somehow, which prevented me from downloading Game Pass games for my new subscription. That was fun to deal with, especially when the built-in troubleshooter SPECIFICALLY FOR MICROSOFT APPLICATIONS doesn't fix it. /s

But yeah, I remember having issues with 10 at launch (and throughout its lifetime actually) so I'll give 11 a go once it's got a few updates under its belt.

I did a fresh install on a separate hard drive so I'm dual booting for now. I've gotten an error on bootup a couple of times missing some .efi file, I restart and then it boots fine so not sure what's going on there.

For audio settings when I select 5.1 or 7.1, it immediately changes back to stereo. I installed the Dolby app and then I could select Dolby Atmos which does engage all my speakers. You also can't click on the speaker to quickly choose your output device.

To get to the Nvidia display dialog you right click on the desktop which brings up a context menu but then you have to click another option and then it brings up the context menu with the Nvidia option on it. Why???????

I did netwinplz from the command line so I could setup auto login in without a password and the click button option to select that wasn't there. I had to change a registry value and then go back into the menu and then it was there so I could click it.

I had the taskbar set to automatically disappear and was unable to add an icon to it until I disabled that option. Also right clicking on the taskbar only brings up the taskbar options and not an option to open the task manager?????

I only got to try a couple of games of Rocket League and that seemed to run fine. I'll have to test more demanding games to see if there are any performance issues.

I do like the looks of Windows 11 but a bit frustrated by these issues and some decision they made.

The what now?!
If you're not being sarcastic, it's the "Trusted Platform Module". Either it's a physical chip that's attached to your motherboard, or what's more likely is a setting in your bios because of firmware that basically acts the same. If you turn it off in your bios, your computer will no longer have one of the pre-requisites for Windows 11 and you won't get the upgrade.

Hopefully i don't need to get that far to stop M from upgrading my pc :lollipop_grinning_sweat:

Are they doing like they did with Win 10, where I can upgrade and then rollback, but keep the upgrade license? I assume Windows 11 won't be free forever, will it?

My 6700k processor isn't supported nor do I have TPM 2, so guess I don't have to worry about it. I thought they'd relaxed the TPM requirement.

Okay one super stupid thing I noticed: if you use a dual monitor setup it doesn't show the date/time on the second monitor.

What a weird omission.

My drives are NTFS, so it looks like it's a fresh install for me if I can be bothered.

it had me enable custom boot and tpm 2.0 but after I did those things in the BIOS I couldn't get windows to boot so i gave up. probably not worth it

Meh, i guess i'll wait a couple of years since window's track record is kind of shit.
At least it will be a free upgrade for a while so no hurries.

I mean, why deal with potential unsupported apps and drivers problems and whatnot.
Beta testing is shit.

The installer literally tells you which apps/drivers you need to update before final installation.

In fact, you can't even proceed until you've updated [or deleted] said apps.

Ok, then why even bother?

Why Windows 11 is faster-Tech Radar

but destroys gaming performance (!?)

You can turn this off with a toggle.
  1. Click Start
  2. Search "Core Isolation"
  3. Click "Core Isolation"
  4. Click toggle switch to turn off
  5. Restart
  6. Done.

VBS is not typically on by default unless you've purchased your PC from a specific manufacturer. This youtuber is looking for clicks and you do not need to go into the registry editor. This feature is also in WIndows 10.

Nope they're sticking with zero trust environment, they designed the OS for those requirements, and it's very well they're doing that. They had to take this step eventually anyway, why not now?

How is everyone's Windows 11 experience so far? It feels a little bit snappier and smoother to me.
Same, there are little nit-picks I don't like, like the lack of customization and placement of the start menu. But I'm sure that stuff will come in an update. Overall, I'm pretty happy with the update, as everything I need is functioning.

Says it passes the pc health check for update but won’t update. I’ve turned Tpm and secure boot on as recommended. Not sure what else to do. Looks like I’m staying windows 10 lmao

This is why I'll refrain from installing it on my desktop. Both my laptops are running it happily. My HP Pavilion Gaming seems a might snappier that with Windows 10 after an in-place upgrade, too.

Upgraded via Media Creation toolkit. Used an old USB drive to create the image and installed it on an Win10 laptop (Asus S15, Intel). Took about half an hour but so far everything seems to be working.

It complained about my Virtual Desktop streamer that I use for Quest VR, but that was about it for install issues.

It's a bit annoying that some of my commonly used things are seemingly buried behind an extra click or so, but that might be just a setting or a tweak away from getting it back to normal.

I do not understand the people that are stubbornly refusing to upgrade. What you gonna do a year from now lol. This is a glorified service pack that they decided to call Windows 11.

I get not upgrading immediately while they work out the kinks...

I am overall pretty amazed they went from public beta to general release so quickly and without addressing many of the top gripes people have with it.

Wish they’d move the start button back to the corner while keeping the new centered icons. Or at least give an option.

start button in left corner, program icons centered, lock/notification area right corner. Everything would have its spot and your start button stays constantly in one spot

Sucks that they introduced such draconian hardware limitations. Most people don't know what a tpm is. And apparently an i7 4790k, 32gigs of ram, z97 and a 1080 is too peasant like to be allowed to (officially) join the W11 party. Talk about splitting your user base...

How's gaming performance for those of you who upgraded?
Gears 5 and AC Valhalla seem the same when benchmarking, but Horizon saw 5fps increase @4K. Not sure if that's from W11 or the latest Nvidia drivers. So far the OS seem okay, getting into some menu took adjusting to but it wasn't that big of a deal. I'm mostly a vanilla user and don't customize my UI all that much.
