Windows 12 Delayed

I mean makes sense they pretty much had a monopoly on it since forever. Gen z and Gen alpha are all about Macs and mobile nowadays.
Mac sales have been falling as well and I doubt that many people are making the Linux jump. Mind you, both of these are better unless you are running LTSC or Enterprise and that's a very small minority amongst consumers.

It's mobile + tablets that are eating PC lunch. I don't think Chromebook sales are growing either so can't be that.

Have they said they will release a Windows 12? I am sure we will get a Windows 12 eventually - but I thought the whole point of Windows 10 was that it would be the last named Windows upgrade - but then they were forced to go to Windows 11 to avoid mass confusion when they incorporated the hardware security features.

I mean, that Windows 10 thing was a really stupid idea from the start. they didn't think it through really.

you can't add meaningful updates that add hardware requirements (which is inevitable in the long run) and have it all be called Windows 10.
that would be way too confusing.

"so, my PC is compatible with Windows 10.5.10.6V but not with 10.6.01.1B?" 🤣

just calling them Windows 11 and Windows 12 just makes way more sense

So many people haven't even made the jump to 11, how the fuck are they already thinking about 12? Lmao. Focus on 11 and make it better so that those that are hesistant to jump to 11 no longer are.

Despite what nerds on forums like this think, most people don't need a PC at all. Zoomers don't even know how to use them and do everything outside of work on their phone. PCs are GenX and Millennial devices.

This is a response to the story and recent sentiment that windows has "been the problem all along" for PC gaming. They also extended Win 10, iirc. They will require a ms account but that is just some big brained idea they had right before the delay. The REASON for that delay is this delay I expect.

Since then they have been in a rush behind the scenes to make Windows the perfect place for gaming from a technical perspective. Funny how they waited all this time to do that, but there was a catalyst here and caused all this. Perhaps "Steam OS" is coming to mind. Did a recent version for a PC handheld make it a much better gaming machine?

Well yeah, they are finally fixing windows for real for gaming, or so I suspect. They will want this "fix" rolled out with a new OS because it is always a struggle giving people a reason to upgrade.

Win12 will advertise better gaming as the reason to upgrade. Mark it down. It will actually be improved too, just not as much as it could be when weighted against their desire to advertise things to you and collect your data.
I think you are probably right and I think it's directly related to consolidating things like Xbox into "Windows" too. It will probably all launch with corePC. It just seems like this would be a vital component to modularizing how windows is deployed for different applications or devices. This doesn't seem to come up much with future Xbox speculation but when you read about what corePC is meant to accomplish it seems kinda obvious where MS going.

Windoise 12.
I hear it has access to quite a bit of information.
It has a blue face for an interface.
I want the full program.

Riding Windows 10 until the homebrew repacks no longer work at all. I've already accepted that it's my last Windows for home use. Hopefully Steam OS catches up by then. If you zoom out and look at their momentum, it seems like it's not too far afield for such a timeline.

linux is getting more and more attractive

I think the high ups might have notice recently that in order to launch Windows 12 it needs to be working first.
By the time they release it will be at least 10% functional.

Windows 11 should be rebranded as Windows L (for both Legacy and taking the 'L') and be a legacy OS with indefinite support that retains a lot of the heavy junk that may be necessary for some.

Meanwhile, 12 should be a nice clean break, strip it back, refine it, get rid of every last bit of bloat that's not needed. Start fresh.

Also, if a bug has been around for 15yrs and it isn't fixed, then got on it MS, you're worth over $3T, there are no excuses.

They may be doing the Vista thing and trying to get the next version out because the reputation of the current OS is absolutely toxic. Shocking, I know, but this isn't the first time MS has created an OS so shitty that the majority of people want nothing to do with it and skip a generation.

Though I think part of the problem this time is that they're so overinvested in AI buttfuckery that I can't imagine Windows 12 being anything but a dumping ground for all of the shit that people have told MS, loud and clear, they do not want. Skipping a generation of Windows is pretty common, but skipping two is going to be hard if they bungle it this time.

How does one do their assignments/work/ research on a tiny ass mobile screen?

Also, doesn't this mean steam will inevitably stop growing as pcs reduce?

Windows 12 feels way too soon.
Windows 11 came out almost 4 years ago.

Microsoft is unfortunately stuck in the sense that the number of organizations around the world with critical software built to run on the current Windows architecture is too massive for a clean break in 1 version. There's still a lot they can do to clean up Windows as it exists today, but a clean break as you describe is not entirely feasible.

Mac sales have been falling as well and I doubt that many people are making the Linux jump. Mind you, both of these are better unless you are running LTSC or Enterprise and that's a very small minority amongst consumers.

Exactly. There's a reason the new iPad OS essentially turns the iPad into a macbook air. Apple knows that outside of high end Macbook pros, they're about to start selling a lot fewer laptops.

I'm willing to bet most people using Windows have no idea what 11 does differently than 10 aside from defaulting the taskbar icons to the bottom center of the screen.

That's very true. But Vista's reputation was far more toxic compared to 11. But hey, times change, maybe this is just toxic enough for them to do that. I could certainly see that.

There was Windows 12 in development? Each time there is new Windows they say it's gonna be the last one.

They only said that in W10, because the idea was just to make new increments to the system, since the world was moving from the idea of "software in a box" to "software as a service". So like Office 365, the idea was that it would become SO with a subscription behind it.

Microsoft was developing Windows 10X for portable devices when for some reason it decided to cancel the project. However, the interface was used in the annual update of Windows 10, which at the time was called "Sun Valley".

In 2020, there was a massive ransomware attack on the US government, and part of the blame was on Windows 10 on some machines, which had several security flaws. As a result, Microsoft decided to create a new version, Windows 11, with a greater focus on security. And here we are.

If people are already complaining about the Windows 11 interface, imagine when they see the 12 interface, which aims to be a MacOS clone.

Zoomers don't work, they quiet quit. But seriously I specified outside of work in my post. There's even a meme amongst zoomers about how millennials don't make big purchases on their phone and use a computer instead (which is true).

I don't think Steam is going anywhere anytime soon but the reality is that generations coming up behind millennials consume entertainment in a totally different way.

Windows 2000 pro is still my fav windows. It was the first time I could leave my computer on for weeks without needing a reboot and it played all games no problem I delayed upgrading to XP until SP3 because it was so good.
