I signed up for the beta, because I like signing up for things. That site is pretty bare, though

I got in. I'm on dialup so it's gonna be a couple hours before it gets installed. I'll let you all know how much it sucks or doesn't suck later

I found the fact that this wasn't just SP3 or a planned part of Longhorn to be so insulting that I wouldn't even sign up for the beta.

Why would it be part of Windows? All major companies charge for antivirus protection.

I got in the beta a few weeks ago.

OneCare crashed when I tried to get into it after the required reboot by the installer. My system is clean, no weird stuff here. It has a good amount of programs and files on it, but not such that should crash an anti-virus app, even if it is in beta. I promptly uninstalled it.

I recommend Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security. $50. 30-day trial. I've installed it at a few clients, and it works nicely.

Don't balk at the price tag. OneCare won't end up being free once it's out of beta. Don't let MS shovel crapware down your throat, go for the superior product.

PC Cillin's antivirus record ain't good anough for $50. For me, it's either Kaspersky or Panda, the top two rated for virus detection. And since I'm a cheap skate, Panda it is (you can find $20 OEM version just about everywhere online).

PCCillin, as a tech support guy I hate that god damn program. They release an update to it that introduces a bug that causes everyone's CPU usage to spike to 100% constantly. Instead of releasing a fix for it, they get everyone to perform a roll back on it and redownload a fixed version of the patch. Such bullshit.

You sound completely unbiased. They don't charge for their antispyware, who knows if they will charge for it. I think they probably will though. I would nto recommend installing a beta of Vista, you might have a heart attack.

I realize what Phoenix's issue is. It is definitely a conflict of interest for them to sell a product that will cover up the flaws in their own OS.

Pimwerx, read the instructions on the page. :P

I like it, it's inconspicuous

Yup, and it's also well intergrated like Anti-Spyware and Sp2. Even if they charge for it in the future, I'll probably still use it. OMFG EVIL M$!!!!!!

I have to get my own computer so damn bad...My father likes to load our computer with Anti-Virus shit that just slows it down, and it bugs the hell out of me. I may actually consider this program however. For my own PC, if I were to get one.

What program did they buy out this time? I am trusting the security of my PC to something that is built form the ground up my MS.

I've never been a McAfee guy, just Norton. The problem with that, Norton tries to stop every file that comes in. One Care is intelligent

Well I haven't gotten any viruses in the past 24 hours, so clearly it's working.

But I do have a problem. It insists on doing a pc "tune-up" at least once a month, which includes hdd defragging. The problem is that my computer crashes when you try to defrag the C partition, or even view the report for it (it has been like this for at least a year). I can defrag my other partition with no problems and can defrag C in safe mode, but not in regular windows.

When it crashes, the screen just goes blank, the monitor doesn't go into sleep mode so it must still be getting some kind of signal. The computer doesn't respond to keyboard input. There's nothing in the Minidump folder or the system log that would point to the culprit. Any ideas on what the cause could be?

I just uninstalled OneCare a couple of nights ago-the stupid firewall would not let me into Windows Update, Hotmail, or even Microsoft's Beta Bug Report Form without dropping it first! It let me into all the other sites I visit, but as soon as I tried going into the aforementioned sites-THUD. Plus, I hated how the Backup program did not let you backup by drive\partition, and it wouldn't let you unselect a particular file-just particular types of files. I didn't think it was possible for them to create something that would make me miss Norton Systemworks, but they did.

:lol

I would fully expect betas of any OS to crash. I expected OneCare to crash, but not right after the first reboot post-installation. I also didn't care for the kiddy interface - there's no real customization, no way to configure all the little aspects of the program's operation like in other programs.

I do think of myself as fairly unbiased - I've just found something that seems to work well.

Oh, and by the way, they will most likely charge for the antivirus. You're correct, they do not charge for the antispyware, which is the only way they could offer MSAS without getting into a PR nightmare (especially considering AdAware, Spybot, and the other free apps). They've already got the subscription management stuff built into MS OneCare, and most people who have been following the MS stuff closely are pretty sure they will charge for it.

Shog: I've not had the chance to try those. I was under the impression that Trend was pretty high up there, and all of the guys I work with recommend it over others. Got a link to some ratings?

Also, Panda seems a little shady: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0006LCHUE/?tag=neogaf0e-20
I couldn't find renewal prices on their site, but one of the Amazon reviews mentions needing to pay full price for a renewal. I'm not keen on practices like that. While Panda may be nifty cool, I'd rather buy from a company that doesn't seem so greedy.

Kaspersky offers 30% off license renewals. I might try it.

Because you're paying the same people to protect your OS as the people who WROTE the OS. Viruses for the most part are exploiting problems in the operating system. Why should I be paying the people who wrote the operating system to protect me from their own holes? Its offensive!

Right on!

Edit: Just watch MS charge people for protection from worms that exploit Windows or Longhorn weaknesses that should have been patched to begin with.

This sound suspiciously like a mob charging the people in their territory for 'protection' money...

I see your point and somewhat agree. It just seems like bad press for MS to me unless it's a free product they are providing. At the same time.. people get viruses all the time without any kind of OS exploit.

And if they did include it with windows we would get the some old morons yelling about how theyre using their monopoly to take over the antivirus world.

Hmm I just got accepted in to the Windows OneCare beta... I'm trying to decide if I'm going to even bother... maybe I'll install it on the oldest PC in our house that just functions as network storage.

I've been using Antivir for a while now with great sucess. The program is free, has very low resource usage, and actually finds things! What are the opinions on it?

I am downloading as we speak. I think calling it an antivirus program is a bit of a misnomer- it is a full suite with backup tools, software firewall, maintenance tools, and of course antivirus. I can see how MS could sell this as a standalone product.

I use that too, because it's free and it's pretty good - at least according to some tests I've seen back then when I started using it - I can't really say I had any virus for it to actually find, though.

I kinda think that with timely installing of windows patches, and using something other than IE for web browsing, you really have to be either very stupid or very unlucky to get any viruses or spyware, especially if you use some kind of firewall.
