Look sitting on an update doesn't make sense, but when did MS start making sense these days company wide?dLMN8R said:It doesn't matter if Joe Belfiore said that it would launch very very soon. The fact is that the update was released, and the update had problems.
That inherently means that the update was not finished. Maybe they thought it was finished and ready for release back in December, but now that it's actually been pushed to devices, and it bricked a few in the process, it's obvious that they determined that it wasn't actually ready for release.
There is no question whatsoever that the process is taking too long, and that flaws have been found that should have been found much earlier. But this notion that it's been sitting untouched for the last 3 months just waiting for a release flies directly in the face of the unquestionable fact that it has been proven to have problems, and was therefore not finished.
Same goes for Windows 7 SP1 - how do you know that it was completed in November? Microsoft didn't announce that. Maybe they planned to finish it in November, but they found unexpected issues which caused a delay.
I'm really confused why people would think that any company would create an update and literally sit on it for 3-4 months without pushing it to customers.
That was fast. I wish Microsoft would release an updated SDK with APIs for the compass and the camera and socket support. Out of the 100 apps that are released every day I can barely recommend one. There's soo much crap ... We definitely need more quality apps, so bring it on @MIX11, Microsoft.Earl Cazone said:did we post that there are now 10.000 apps in the marketplace?

I can't speak for Microsoft, but my company sits on my code for months regularly before deploying it to the production servers. It can be for many reasons, but rarely is it because there is a problem with the code itself.dLMN8R said:I'm really confused why people would think that any company would create an update and literally sit on it for 3-4 months without pushing it to customers.
snap0212 said:A quick question about YouTube on Windows Phone 7. I've downloaded various YouTube Apps (the "official" one, the HTC one, for example), but often times videos just don't play on the device.
Here's one example of a video that doesn't work:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AuemS3gd8GE
I'm also a huge fan of RedSunGamer. They do live streams of Japanese games every Tursday and upload the videos from justin.tv to YouTube afterwards. These videos (especially the newer ones) don't work either. They all play just fine on my iPhone 3G.
Does anyone know how I can fix this?
all I have done was to just register a free youmail account, link to an email addy you create just for voice mail (I use Gmail, set to "as items arrive), set "send MP3 with email notification" on your youmail account and voila, you have visual voice mail on a live tile.
every time a voice mail comes you get a live tile update (with email notification on lock screen) with the name of caller in email (if available) and an mp3 ready to dl for listening.
It says there was an error and that I should disconnect from Zune in case I'm connected. That's obviously not the case. Deleted all the Youtube apps, reinstalled everything, deleted the browser data, but nothing seems to help.Anno said:Weird. That video works just fine on my Surround. The only YouTube app I have is the official one. Does it give you some kind of error or does it just not play?

It happened with my departed Omnia 7 and I did not find any way to fix it so good luck.snap0212 said:It says there was an error and that I should disconnect from Zune in case I'm connected. I wouldn't be surprised if these videos weren't working simply because I'm not in the US. I also googled a bit and did not find anything. :|
Brettison said:Isn't that a pop3 problem in general and not a phone problem?
So you got the same error message?MCD said:It happened with my departed Omnia 7 and I did not find any way to fix it so good luck.
My Omnia 7 was "factory unlocked" btw so that could have been the cause.
I already changed my phone settings (everything to US). My PC is from the US as well and is running a US copy of Windows 7 (tried to change the region settings, nothing changed).MCD said:Now that I think about it, try changing your Phone region to US, your Hotmail to US and even your PC to US (and then connect it to Zune) or all to Germany and try again. Perhaps it might do the trick.
You're in Germany, right? If you change the location in the region settings, you automatically change the region access of the Zune software. If you change it to US, you'll see the US marketplace, change it to France, you'll see the French marketplace and so on. To access the German apps on your PC, change the computer region back to Germany. If you want to keep the podcast section, download the reg fix from the FAQ section of the OP (I actually add some useful information from time to time).snap0212 said:I already changed my phone settings (everything to US). One thing I noticed, though. I can't access Germany specific App offers through the Zune client on my PC. There's a Navigon GPS App available for free, but it doesn't show up on my PC. It does on my WP7. Weird.
Oh, and if there's no solution for my problem I'm definitely done with Windows Phone 7, by the way.

That's what I said? I was talking about the PC, not the phone.Chiaroscuro said:Nope. Region settings in the phone does not affect Zune or marketplace. The marketplace on the phone is determinated only by your windows live id (gamertag) region. On the PC, the only think that matters for the Zune marketplace is the Windows Region Settings on Control Panel.
I use the region settings on my HTC HD& changed to Brazil (to allow our format of day/time) and I continue to have acess to marketplace and youtube. However this settings affects some of the applications. The hightlights of the Xbox Live is only updated if my region is changed back to US, and the game Guitar Hero refuses to run if the region is set to Brazil.

It's not about the issues alone. It's the issues in combination with the slowness of the software giant, what makes all of this such a disaster. 4-5 months without one bug fix is fucked up for a v1.0 product.Iced_Eagle said:We'll see if MS learns from their mistakes next time. Anyone calling WP7 dead in the water because of these issues is way too near-sighted, and plain wrong.

Seems to be a very specific issue, that isn't related to the codec or app. Others here confirmed that the video you linked worked, right? Did you install any homebrew software?snap0212 said:It doesn't seem like Microsoft knows how to fix YouTube for me. I have tried everything and nothing seems to work. I'm sure Microsoft won't fix this in the upcoming NoDo Update.
No Homebrew, nothing. And yes, others have tried the video and said it was working. I don't even know who I should contact about this.brotkasten said:Seems to be a very specific issue, that isn't related to the codec or app. Others here confirmed that the video you linked worked, right? Shouldn't it be locked on my iPhone and PC as well then?VanMardigan said:Google region-locks content, has anyone from your area tried the video?
http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/14/microsoft-reportedly-kills-off-zune-hardware-will-focus-on-soft/Details are still emerging on this one, but it looks like Microsoft has finally killed off the Zune -- or the hardware side of things, anyway. According to Bloomberg's Dina Bass, an unnamed source has confirmed that Microsoft will no longer produce new Zune media players, and that the company will instead focus solely on the Zune software that already has a foothold on the Xbox 360 and Windows Phone devices (it's not clear if the name will stick around). More as we get it.
Yep, if it's region restricted, it shouldn't play on your iPhone or PC.snap0212 said:Shouldn't it be locked on my iPhone and PC as well then?
Mixed feelings about that one. I've been keeping an eye out for a cheap 32GB Zune HD on Craigslist. Guess I'll skip and just cancel my Zune subscription.brotkasten said:It seems Microsoft is killing the Zune hardware. One step closer to killing off the brand?

Not surprising, but it's such a shame. I love my HD, it's still the best portable music player I've ever had.

Peter Bright on ArsTechnica with another great article on the WP7 update mess: The carriers are not your customers: the Windows Phone 7 update mess
If you are doubting Microsoft's loyalties to the carriers or consumers I'll only pose one question: Where's Tethering?
I'm just glad he just says what he thinks. I don't think Microsoft likes how he talks about them and their WP7s. At least we know that his criticism is heard at Microsoft.brotkasten said:And here's Thurrot defending his stance on the "carriers can/can't block updates" debate.

Yeah, that's been the most encouraging sub-plot in this story. Coming from an iOS/Mac ecosystem where my only exposure to Microsoft pundits was when they said bad things about Apple products (i.e. They were implied to be Microsoft shills) I've been relieved to see them wage war on behalf of the end-users. If the hackers had taken the same attitude, and not made an unholy alliance with Microsoft, there might be more going for this platform.snap0212 said:I'm just glad he just says what he thinks.
