how do we know it wasn't a Samsung firmware addition to NoDo that screwed this up? (not to mention AT&Ts epic untimeliness with updates)

the blog certainly seemed to by pointing to that.

It doesn't matter if Joe Belfiore said that it would launch very very soon. The fact is that the update was released, and the update had problems.

That inherently means that the update was not finished. Maybe they thought it was finished and ready for release back in December, but now that it's actually been pushed to devices, and it bricked a few in the process, it's obvious that they determined that it wasn't actually ready for release.

There is no question whatsoever that the process is taking too long, and that flaws have been found that should have been found much earlier. But this notion that it's been sitting untouched for the last 3 months just waiting for a release flies directly in the face of the unquestionable fact that it has been proven to have problems, and was therefore not finished.

Same goes for Windows 7 SP1 - how do you know that it was completed in November? Microsoft didn't announce that. Maybe they planned to finish it in November, but they found unexpected issues which caused a delay.

I'm really confused why people would think that any company would create an update and literally sit on it for 3-4 months without pushing it to customers.
Look sitting on an update doesn't make sense, but when did MS start making sense these days company wide?

That was fast. I wish Microsoft would release an updated SDK with APIs for the compass and the camera and socket support. Out of the 100 apps that are released every day I can barely recommend one. There's soo much crap ... We definitely need more quality apps, so bring it on @MIX11, Microsoft.

btw, the rumored release date for the Verizon HTC 7 Trophy is March 24.

I can't speak for Microsoft, but my company sits on my code for months regularly before deploying it to the production servers. It can be for many reasons, but rarely is it because there is a problem with the code itself.

My phone's battery died overnight for the first time that I can remember. My Nexus One did that all the time. Good thing I don't work today.

What's weird is that it had a good amount of battery left according to the meter. Certainly enough to last the night. The phone has been excellent at holding battery life on standby, so this is troubling. The only app I've installed yesterday that I can point to is....messenger by minowa. I remember the Yahoo app would kill my n1, I may need to uninstall the app if it'll kill my battery life, especially since its garbage anyway.

A quick question about YouTube on Windows Phone 7. I've downloaded various YouTube Apps (the "official" one, the HTC one, for example), but often times videos just don't play on the device.

Here's one example of a video that doesn't work:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AuemS3gd8GE

I'm also a huge fan of RedSunGamer. They do live streams of Japanese games every Tursday and upload the videos from justin.tv to YouTube afterwards. These videos (especially the newer ones) don't work either. They all play just fine on my iPhone 3G.

Does anyone know how I can fix this?

Weird. That video works just fine on my Surround. The only YouTube app I have is the official one. Does it give you some kind of error or does it just not play?

for those looking for Visual voicemail, MagikMAil ($2.99) released the update last night that adds a live tile and a toast for VMs.

Has a nice interface and works flawlessly (uses youmail)

but I still actually prefer my email method which allows the same features (call number back, email voicemail, SMS reply etc), but instead of a 10 second toast, you get the mail icon staying on lock screen.

here is the email method, do it yourself for free that I figured out...

all I have done was to just register a free youmail account, link to an email addy you create just for voice mail (I use Gmail, set to "as items arrive), set "send MP3 with email notification" on your youmail account and voila, you have visual voice mail on a live tile. :D

every time a voice mail comes you get a live tile update (with email notification on lock screen) with the name of caller in email (if available) and an mp3 ready to dl for listening.

It says there was an error and that I should disconnect from Zune in case I'm connected. That's obviously not the case. Deleted all the Youtube apps, reinstalled everything, deleted the browser data, but nothing seems to help.

I wouldn't be surprised if these videos weren't working simply because I'm not in the US. I also googled a bit and did not find anything. :|

I might have missed it or just don't remember but is there any word on getting the ability to officially use our phones as wireless hotspots (ATT Focus)? My work network is going to be locked down pretty soon so a lot of coworkers are picking up tablets with 3G and I would love to just be able to use my phone for that and pick up a tablet with wireless only. I have unlimited 3G data on my phone and would love to not have to pay for data on a tablet.

It happened with my departed Omnia 7 and I did not find any way to fix it so good luck.

My Omnia 7 was "factory unlocked" btw so that could have been the cause.

Brettison said:
Isn't that a pop3 problem in general and not a phone problem?

I don't know, but I don't think so.

I'm using the pop3 protocol for years on different devices and I never experienced any problems. I can always leave my mails on the server, if I want.

Yeah, lots of times on pop3 accounts there's a setting to leave the mail on the server. Not always, but it's pretty common...

So you got the same error message?

I'm from Germany so I did a google search using the German error message ("Probleme beim Abspielen des ausgewählten Videos. Wenn eine Verbindung mit Zune besteht, trennen Sie die, und versuchen die es später erneut"). Not one single result. Then I switched the language and everything to English (US), tried it again and got the same error message:

"There was a problem playing the video you selected. If you're connected to Zune, disconnect and try again"

Google directed me to a post of yours.

What am I supposed to do now? There's no way I'll just accept this and not watch YouTube videos again. There are a few people on Microsoft's Answer service who have the same problem. Their questions are marked as "answered", but there's no answer.... nowhere. Dammit.

I wish I could help you but I have absolutely no clue how. I also had a problem with Adobe Reader; it refused to install.

I just know my Samsung Focus have none of these problems which means I won't be buying any non US WP7 phones any time soon.

Now that I think about it, try changing your Phone region to US, your Hotmail to US and even your PC to US (and then connect it to Zune) or all to Germany and try again. Perhaps it might do the trick.

I already changed my phone settings (everything to US). My PC is from the US as well and is running a US copy of Windows 7 (tried to change the region settings, nothing changed).

One thing I noticed, though. I can't access Germany specific App offers through the Zune client on my PC. There's a Navigon GPS App available for free, but it doesn't show up on my PC. It does on my WP7. Weird.

Oh, and if there's no solution for my problem I'm definitely done with Windows Phone 7, by the way.

Is there a firmware for your phone? Omnia 7 had new roms for example. It might help if so.

If all else fails, either exchange your phone or wait for copy/pasta update from MS. They might have stealthly fixed it.

You're in Germany, right? If you change the location in the region settings, you automatically change the region access of the Zune software. If you change it to US, you'll see the US marketplace, change it to France, you'll see the French marketplace and so on. To access the German apps on your PC, change the computer region back to Germany. If you want to keep the podcast section, download the reg fix from the FAQ section of the OP (I actually add some useful information from time to time).

Nope. Region settings in the phone does not affect Zune or marketplace. The marketplace on the phone is determinated only by your windows live id (gamertag) region. On the PC, the only think that matters for the Zune marketplace is the Windows Region Settings on Control Panel.

I use the region settings on my HTC HD& changed to Brazil (to allow our format of day/time) and I continue to have acess to marketplace and youtube. However this settings affects some of the applications. The hightlights of the Xbox Live is only updated if my region is changed back to US, and the game Guitar Hero refuses to run if the region is set to Brazil.

That's what I said? I was talking about the PC, not the phone.

Same boat as you, Omnia 7 in Germany, bought factory unlocked, running it with Base (ePlus):
- preinstalled Software only works when using a T-Mobile simcard. Only then. This goes for the Navigon GPS thnigy too.
- To get your Zune running the way you´d like it, you don´t need to change the region settings, but download and run the Zune unlock patch (you´ll have it when you see the "social" tab between "marktplatz" and Telefon")

WP7 is coming to Verizon on the 25th right?

Current rumor, yes.

I can't wait for this update fiasco to be behind us. This is just MS' first update for the phone, so there was always bound to be issues. For Mango and any other updates, I expect this process to be significantly smoothed out.

Don't forget that even now, Apple still runs into update issues which bricks devices.

We'll see if MS learns from their mistakes next time. Anyone calling WP7 dead in the water because of these issues is way too near-sighted, and plain wrong.

It's not about the issues alone. It's the issues in combination with the slowness of the software giant, what makes all of this such a disaster. 4-5 months without one bug fix is fucked up for a v1.0 product.

Agreed, MS definitely should be encouraging everyone to move faster. However, seeing the issues we are getting now, it is understandable why it's taking longer than they have already hoped. MS finished NoDo in December. If they had an Apple-like grip on their ecosystem (also if they had one phone on one carrier), they could have had the update out before XMas. Unfortunately, the woes of having multiple devices on multiple carriers across the world comes into play unfortunately, which is why it's slow.

In other news, iPhone users are for the third time hit by the dreaded iPhone DST bug.

http://www.neowin.net/news/dst-bug-strikes-iphone-again

Personally, I'm glad my WP7 handled DST flawlessly. :)

One more week till NoDo yeahhhhh!!!!

I really am looking forward to the app speedup, c/p, and marketplace fixes. I just hope other random stuff gets fixed as well. I asked the team for a full changelog at the blog, that would be a nice first step in openness.

I need someone to convince me why I should get the new Verizon Windows 7 phone over the Android HTC Thunderbolt or Droid Bionic 4G phones.

I LOVE my Zune HD but I don't know man.... starting to think getting a Microsoft phone is a mistake

currently have an LG DARE

Obviously, there are too many individual factors for us to tell you what to get.

The main advantages of WP7 are Zune (which you are obviously familiar with) and Xbox. Native Office support is great, though Android can edit office documents.

I assume you already have an idea of Android's strengths, so based on what's important to you, make the call.

It doesn't seem like Microsoft knows how to fix YouTube for me. I have tried everything and nothing seems to work. The only thing Microsoft's Community Moderator said was that I should make sure I'm using m.youtube.com.

I'm sure Microsoft won't fix this in the upcoming NoDo Update.

You can pre-order the HTC Arrive at Wirefly for $49.99.
http://www.everythingwm.com/wirefly...orders-for-sprint-priced-at-49-99/2011/03/14/

I'm not a fan of charts and graphs and things like that, but this one is kinda impressive.

It would be nice if more than 10% of the apps in the marketplace were actually good or useful.

Seems to be a very specific issue, that isn't related to the codec or app. Others here confirmed that the video you linked worked, right? Did you install any homebrew software?

No Homebrew, nothing. And yes, others have tried the video and said it was working. I don't even know who I should contact about this.

Microsoft, o2 (bought the phone there without contract), HTC?

It seems Microsoft is killing the Zune hardware. One step closer to killing off the brand?
Details are still emerging on this one, but it looks like Microsoft has finally killed off the Zune -- or the hardware side of things, anyway. According to Bloomberg's Dina Bass, an unnamed source has confirmed that Microsoft will no longer produce new Zune media players, and that the company will instead focus solely on the Zune software that already has a foothold on the Xbox 360 and Windows Phone devices (it's not clear if the name will stick around). More as we get it.

Not surprising, but it's such a shame. I love my HD, it's still the best portable music player I've ever had.

snap0212 said:
Shouldn't it be locked on my iPhone and PC as well then?
Yep, if it's region restricted, it shouldn't play on your iPhone or PC.

Mixed feelings about that one. I've been keeping an eye out for a cheap 32GB Zune HD on Craigslist. Guess I'll skip and just cancel my Zune subscription.

Peter Bright on ArsTechnica with another great article on the WP7 update mess: The carriers are not your customers: the Windows Phone 7 update mess

If you are doubting Microsoft's loyalties to the carriers or consumers I'll only pose one question: Where's Tethering?

And here's Thurrot defending his stance on the "carriers can/can't block updates" debate.

Yeah, that's been the most encouraging sub-plot in this story. Coming from an iOS/Mac ecosystem where my only exposure to Microsoft pundits was when they said bad things about Apple products (i.e. They were implied to be Microsoft shills) I've been relieved to see them wage war on behalf of the end-users. If the hackers had taken the same attitude, and not made an unholy alliance with Microsoft, there might be more going for this platform.

http://www.windowsitpro.com/article...ws-Phone-Update-7-Says-Next-One-on-Track.aspx

I don't know why is there anything to debate, the block post by Microsoft engineer already confirm as much. Carrier do block the update. According to MS guy post, carrier can set the date when update can be deploy (ie they can delay it), bundle up the update (ie they can block one update and force the update to the next cycle) and at the end he said, everyone will "eventually" get the update. So it could be like Android where a year later you get to update your device when all the newer one already sport the latest OS version.

People on various site keep bashing Paul Thurot but at least he's not spineless and don't mind standing up to Microsoft. The guy that make Weave app (which I like a lot) twitter that they drop his site (windows site not win 7 secrets) from their news feed. How stupid. He is a pundit, that is what he suppose to do.

If MS want us early adopters to evangelized the platform then they need to give us good reason to be excited about it. I was, but not any more.

I still like my phone.. but they need to start acting like they are in last place and start scrambling to catch up in features instead of just application count.
