God, this really sucks. I'm sorry to hear that.

I agree with Thurrot's article. Microsoft should do updates whenever they can. I mean, it's really ridiculous and it would be like waiting for a Service Pack until a (major) bug or security hole in Windows gets fixed.

Meanwhile in Redmond: Microsoft releases OneNote app for iPhone, free for a 'limited time'

There goes an exclusive WP7 feature.

Based on Microsoft's CES keynote and Windows 8 apparently being their tablet OS, it kinda feels like they've already given up on WP7.

Aside from rapid updates, I think it would be smart to release a new Zune based on WP7 (iPod touch equivalent). Would certainly increase the userbase and drive more developer interest in the platform.

I am extremely disappointed with the Outlook for WP7. Unless some surprises are planned throughout the year, it's hard to recommend this to friends, especially given whatever improvements Apple has planned for it's products in June.

I'm adamant about WP7 and my phone, but I don't see myself sticking with it for more than a year if this is a sign of support to come.

The lack of IM is killer right now, but what phone is she getting with HD radio and awesome reception?

And while talking up the Zune HD, let us not forget that a windows phone has much much more overall functionality. Also, the ability to download and stream songs anywhere (not just WiFi) is a killer feature with Zune Pass. Also, the phone kills the Zune HD in the gaming department. Someone reading the last page would swear that the Zune HD is somehow comparable overall to a Windows Phone 7, and that's a joke. Lets not get carried away with our frustration at the lack of updates.

None, which is why she went back to her Sanyo Juno for calls and IM, an now sports my zune hd for her hd radio and better Zune experience.

I would say she was crazy if I myself were not experiencing some severe IM withdrawals. I refuse to pay more per month for text messages to compensate. Especially after convincing my friends to start sending me messages through IM rather than texts.

Threaded texts virtually killed IM'ng for me.

BTW, what will HTML5 and Silverlight bring to the browser? Will we get full YouTube and not the limited mobile version?

We'd get the HTML5 version of YouTube mobile. You know, this one here:

My Netflix app was updated. Anyone notice any diff? At least we have that over Android.
I'm really sick of all these apps getting updated with absolutely no explanation for what was fixed.

I'm a little confused here.

Not only was mine not updated, but I decided to go check the version number versus the current one ... the app is no longer in the marketplace.

Yep, missing here too.

Been playing ilomilo and I love it. Is it a direct port of the XBLA title?
Is it even a port? I'm pretty sure the 360 version was coded in XNA, so this is probably just recompiled with some reduced assets?

It's not a direct port from what I've heard.

Completely unrelated:
After Xbox.com, Microsoft uploaded a preview of the new Microsoft homepage.
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/preview/default.aspx

Microsoft is putting Metro everywhere. Everywhere. Ugh. Doesn't this kinda confirm a Metro UI-ish GUI for Windows 8? Lets see how fast people will get sick of it.

Don't really like the way that new site looks.

Metro looks great on the phone, but I don't think it does so well on larger screens.

Halo Nation rumors
halo-on-wp7.png

Halo has been previously reported to be coming to the Windows Phone 7 platform, especially around the list of planned releases last year prior release of the OS. At CES, which we were able to cover, Steve Ballmer presented and discussed a number of games coming to the mobile platform. Among these were Fable: Coin Golf and PES 2011 along with many already-confirmed titles, but there was one mention that caught some attention – Halo: Nation.
For any Halo fan, this could mean two things. First (and hopefully correct) there could be a potential Halo title arriving to Xbox Live on WP7 named Halo: Nation. What’s exciting about this prospect is what genre it could be: FPS (probably unlikely), RTS (Halo: Wars on-the-go anyone?) or even a racing alternative (Rocket Race game type on Halo: Reach?). The system and available resources from the devices that run WP7 have enough power to provide the foundations of a truly epic game from Bungie.
A second scenario could be the Halo: Nation podcast is making an appearance on Waypoint that is already available in the Marketplace, and could in-fact not be the extension to the franchise that many of us are hoping for. Although Ballmer was reportedly "confused” with the projects he was discussing, Halo: Nation is noted as being developed separately from Waypoint but a Halo title coming to WP7 is all continued (hopeful) speculation.

A friend of mine was thinking about getting a WP7 phone so I went through this thread to see which phone you guys like best and...man, the mood around here changed a lot from page 1 to now.

Is the Venue Pro still a mess?

Not exactly an uncommon thing on GAF :P

I'm still pretty happy with my phone though.

Well, you can just remove those friend and contact that use cat pictures their avatar. Seriously though, you can go into the Live contact and edit their picture and put whatever picture you want for them and choose that instead of Facebook picture.

Thank you all that helped me out. I finally found the Live contact that had the cat picture as their profile pic and replaced it with another.

I honestly thought every phone had the same cat picture. I'm glad I can laugh at myself.

Hey, this is NeoGAF! :lol

I think the biggest disappointment for most of us is the lack of software fixes and updates. I still like my WP7 and would chose it over an Android phone or iPhone any day. If you have specific questions, just ask.

I'm not sure about the Venue Pro. I think the availability is still limited to the US (mid February for the UK), but the devices shouldn't have any problems since the second shipment.

yeah, i think the venue pro issues have been fixed.

yeah, i'd still choose wp7 over android for these reasons; the butter smooth UI, a better keyboard, xbox live gaming, better media management with zune, and netflix.

Yeah, I still love my phone. Wouldn't change it if I was to make the purchase again today knowing what I know now. I constantly have an iPod Touch on me though too, which I essentially use as an iOS App Store device. Regardless, I still spend a ton of time on my phone. It just feels nicer to use the screen and UI. If I'm just checking Facebook, an email or doing a bit of casual browsing I'd choose it over iOS any day of the week. I'm having a lot of fun with the games too, and I think there's a steady enough flow of apps to stop it feeling too old. Just waiting for OS updates now. New features, rather than just apps.

My friend brought his new Android phone over last weekend, and man did it feel stuttery in comparison. What is the real advantage of Android at this point? I'm asking this from a genuinely ignorant standpoint, but the app store can't compete with iOS and the UI can't compete with either, in my opinion.

android still has its advantages; google maps is superior to bing maps, flash in browser, emulators, side loading of apps, and multi-tasking.

android's negatives are; you'll find many apps won't work for your phone, flash in browser is overrated, clunky, and is a major battery drain, plus everything is just ugly in comparison to wp7.

“Anyone who believes this thing is a game changer is a tool.”

There are so many more. He is seriously retarded.

Thurrott's problem is an inflated sense of self-work and childish confidence in himself. While he often makes good points and I still enjoy listening to his podcast (mostly because of Leo), he has the tendency to latch onto ridiculously stupid things and never ever ever let go.

Not necessarily Windows Phone in this case, but he was going positively apeshit over the new Windows 7 taskbar for the longest time, about how it was soooooo stupid that some things required right-clicks, or how it grouped things, etc.

And his ignorance toward yet self-proclaimed knowledge about PC gaming is fucking retarded.

Even on the Xbox he gets it wrong, where he somehow still seems to be of the belief, even after last year, that the PS3 is somehow edging closer and closer to catching up to the 360 and that it's practically neck and neck before Sony will overtake Microsoft.

Huh? There's usually a version number and then whatever fixes were implemented, you have to click on the app before you update for you to see that.

Sure many apps have this - usually smaller apps made by a couple people. But all of the Xbox Live games, bigger apps like Netflix, etc. seem to neglect doing so.

Edging closer in what way? Sales? Because I'm pretty sure it is edging closer world wide.

The version number is always there, yes, but not the change log. That depends on the developer. Some include the change log in the description, but most of the bigger app and game devs don't. I had to ask someone from the MGS for the Crackdown 2: Project Sunburst change log. That's pretty stupid if you ask me and Microsoft should add a change log section for developers, that way they don't have to ruin the description.

btw, BringCast is out

Same as everyone, most of us that keep our phone still love it. I love mine but the lack of news, bug fixes, update and really disappointing CES is probably what cause the latest sentiment.

I am sure he probably meant worldwide as PS3 and 360 number is probably just a few millions apart. Some of the stuff he said is pretty retarded I don't disagree but he is a critics and it's just another opinion. Overall I think he bring good perspective or at least good criticism.

He is right about Xbox, here is Microsoft with essentially a great potential set top box and they just not doing much with it. Google and Apple are trying to come up with TV box and here MS with already 40 millions Xbox in people home next to the tV they could do so much more with media center. Of course that's not going to happen because Microsoft is being Microsoft.

An Update for the Zune Software is also overdue. Short: It's horrible for everything except Music and Videos. Long: The Zune Software might be great for people who are using a Zune Player, but not for those who are using a Windows Phone 7. No App Management, stupid restrictions if you're not from the US (no Podcasts, for example), a horrible experience when browsing through their Apps library, and many more things are just horrible.
...

You should really send the Zune guys a mail.

The fact that they read some mails on the podcast and comment on it should be proof enough that they actually read that stuff (and probably even care).

We don't know. Maybe we'll see something at MWC, but I don't expect much after CES.

He is prone to saying some moronic, knee jerk things but in general he calls things correctly. In a relative sense he is much less of a shill for MS than Gruber is for Apple.

Hahaha whatever you say man. He's usually quite on point when he's writing about Microsoft, I think I read something from him about Windows Home Server which was interesting.

However whenever he writes about Apple he's of a single mindset. Like how he critizises the lack of copy/paste in the iPhone, calling it a "25 year old feature" that is "inexplicably missing" yet in a post called "I Love Windows Phone" he brushes off the same absense saying "Is it true that there’s no copy and paste? No matter."

Or when he predicts the iPad price to be $999, and when it's revealed at $499 he says "In fact, that’s pretty amazing. So good for them." Then when talking about the Playbook and how it will undercut the iPad he says " This is very wise: The iPad is overpriced."

IdeaPad U1 hybrid notebook. Shipping in the second half of 2010, this is the device that will make Apple’s supposed tablet look silly. It’s basically a clamshell netbook-class computer running Windows 7. But you can pop-off the screen and use just that as a tablet.

Lenovo eventually killed that and started over (with Android). And yet you call Gruber a shill. Not the guy who runs Windows banners all over his super site (for Windows) promoting all his Windows Books.

U Mad.

Didn't you get bitched out in another thread for trolling products that you've never used? For just as many MS shills there are, Apple has just as many, if not more. Get over it.

What is the WP7 device to get on AT&T? Are newer phones releasing on AT&T in the next 2 or 3 months?

AT&T's best WP7 is the Samsung Focus and we have no clue about the next devices. Only one new device showed up and that's the Asus E600, but we have no specs yet.

This can really apply to a lot of hosts on the TWiT network.

I love Leo and know that his shtick is to act like he knows nothing (he said this explicitly during a Screen Savers episode back in the day), but I wish he'd challenge Thurott or any of the MacBreak guys more consistently. Ihnatko and Thurott really are of the same coin. Hell, he gives Dvorak too much elbow room.

I think it's because Leo realizes the flagship shows on TWiT are more entertainment than analysis.

Thurott wouldn't be so bad if, as Burger pointed out, he wasn't so randomly inconsistent. But I just figure everything he says is linkbait anyway.
