This, the marketplace bug and the camera settings bug should've been addressed via hotfix and not service pack-like updates. They really need some kind of hotfix system like on Windows. What are they going to do if someone finds a critical security hole? "It should be fixed with the next update in few months, stay tuned"?bigswords said:Slow updates is fine if that's their criteria.
But there's an alarm bug that affects all phones, it can freeze, stops all sound output, till a full restart is done.
Damn it! This should be fixed ASAP.

Beautiful. Even more so if combined.
WP7 is on the verge of greatness, but slow updates + uncertainty of future is downright KILLING it.

Biggest problem is even Android 2.1 phones had a more feature complete browser. Let alone iOS 4 or Android 2.2 devices. They were already way behind at launch, and are taking a whole year to try and catch up to where Android and iOS were last summer. This isn't even counting where both of those platforms will be by then.

quarterly updates might be too aggressive, perhaps two a year with monthly hotfixes or on a six week schedule. More inline with what Apple has been doing. The market is fast, but not that fast. It only seems like that, because manufacturers are releasing new Android devices every three months or so. Seriously, look at the Android SDK timeline:
VanMardigan said:It's a continuing trend to say that they were "way behind" when they launched as a blanket statement, when in truth they had a better game framework than anyone else in the mobile space, a better multimedia experience with the only built in music subscription service, better synergy with FB out of the box, a better picture ecosystem than either platform (with the Windows Live/FB integration into the pics hub), and the best note-taking/Office solution out of the box. They STILL have a better notification system than iPhone, and a much better interface than Android. Still. Saying they are "way behind" as a blanket statement is just plain false.
They're going to integrate the KIN Studio into Windows Live, without the name of course. I, for one, can't wait for that, because so far I'm not happy with WP7 on Windows Live. Even MyPhone for WM was better than that.antiquegamer said:http://www.wpcentral.com/kin-studio-now-completely-dead-long-live-kin-studio-windows-phone
So they kill KIN off before they could even get Windows Phone on to Verizon network ... how thoughtful of you Microsoft. (not that it really matter I guess there's only like 2 people that bought the KIN or something).
I think it would be great if they could have just intergrate all KIN cloud features onto Windows Phone but then again they probably don't want to be associate with such colossal failure.
VanMardigan said:Some of these 'ultimatums' you guys are putting on MS are silly. And I know because I was doing the same thing in this thread. It's just dumb. We're getting a substantial update this month, and a huge one this fall. Those devices you bought last year will get major love at LEAST twice this year.
We all want stuff NOW NOW NOW NOW, but honestly, I've been on all platforms and its the same shit everywhere. My wife's Captivate she bought LAST SUMMER doesn't have Froyo. She is now two versions behind, and no indication whether she'll even get Honeycomb. I doubt it, even though her phone's hardware is up to task. Now THAT's utter bullshit. My Nexus One (which has crapped out twice in one year) doesn't have Gingerbread, FOR NO REASON.
Apple has more leverage, they have more of a whip on the carriers, and that works out great for updates. Apple has more of their shit together NOW, but I was there, front row, when they didn't have copy/paste, didn't have multitasking (I had to jb my phone). Then they do crap like not update with features across the board even if the hardware is capable (like video on the 3g). They do things (like block flash) that infuriated me, and their interface grew stale for me. But still, give them all the credit in the world, their ecosystem is great.
In terms of no new hardware announcements: those are right around the corner for Sprint and Verizon. MS will probably do a second round for AT&T/T-Mobile in the fall. Once a year hardware refreshes, but with MORE device choices than iOS. They are clearly hitting the middle ground between iOS and Android in every respect so far, there clearly IS a strategy. They aren't the media darlings, Paul Thurrot is a negative dude overall, and the lack of solid dates irritates us all.
As consumers, we all have a choice, we vote with our dollars. Feel free to jump to another platform every time you find something you don't like about your current one. I did that last year, bought three phones on three platforms in one year, then realized (just very recently) that it's not the way I should do things. The plan now is to stick with Windows Phone 7 this year. The more I use the phone, the more I like it, and Zune Pass/Xbox Live are the best bang for the buck in entertainment. There are major holes to fill, but I see holes on other platforms too, the grass is always greener....
shantyman said:Because it's not being reasonable. Consumers should expect updates and improvements for something they paid for when that is what the precedent is (WP7 is most comparable to iOS). Microsoft said an update would come out almost immediately upon, and it hasn't. They're just not saying anything at all.
They said January. Oh, I also recall hearing that that tethering would be included in the features.Mr. Snrub said:Did they? It's always been Q1 2011/early 2011.

brotkasten said:See, this is exactly why they don't want to talk about any release dates if it's not 100% certain. They only mentioned a month, it got delayed and everyone if going nuts. Apple does a much better job at this by announcing new stuff WHEN IT'S DONE. Then again, that wouldn't work for Microsoft, because the pressure is much higher, so they need to talk about future stuff.
Why doesn't MS send out betas? Apple lets developers (and friends of developers) beta test every non-bugfix update for about 2-4 weeks before it sends it out into the wild.brotkasten said:The update was obviously delayed (Thurrot confirmed this, iirc).

I don't get that either. Devs are paying $99 per year, they should have access to betas. It's always good to have more beta testers out there and getting more feedback an specific stuff.numble said:Why doesn't MS send out betas? Yes.Korey said:If they don't show anything off at MWC, would you consider the platform basically dead? Considering that literally nothing has leaked and the buzz is just like it was pre-CES (nonexistent)...a little worried here. And this time they can't base an entire presentation around copy/paste.
That's correct, but not every dev has a dev phone. They can unlock their retail devices to sideload the apps (that's how the Chevron jailbreak works).PG2G said:I remember reading that the C&P update was pushed out to people with dev phones (i.e. the Samsung Taylor) a long time ago.
Edit: Just did a quick search, it was early December.
I'm worried that they'll just do some Sprint/Verizon stuff and won't show off anything new. While that's a big deal, I hope they show off something to show that WP7 is looking forward past the first genclaviertekky said:Yes.
However, Microsoft will show something off at MWC because last year that's the same place they revealed WP7.
Yea, that's what happened with the Kin :\ And I just read that they closed the Kin Studio recentlybrotkasten said:That's correct, but not every dev has a dev phone. They can unlock their retail devices to sideload the apps (that's how the Chevron jailbreak works).
And yes, if Microsoft doesn't show anything at MWC, WP7 is dead. Forever. They already stopped the development and fired the entire team.
That's not insecurity. That's "I bought this device and it doesn't work right"Darth Tigris said:The majority of you just sound so insecure with your purchase. Why purchase something you are THAT insecure about?
I don't even have one (or any smartphone) yet and I'm more secure about the platform's future than those that actually purchased and use it. Unfortunate.

Wrote that wrong. August 2012. I upgraded last in August 2009 to the iPhone 4 to sell so I could buy a WP7 at launch. However, I didn't like the phones and I got a job that would provide me with a new phone to play with so I decided to wait.dream said:What kind of awesome unCanadianesque contract are you on?!
