Seems like Xbox Live is kind of a big deal for a lot of people. I'm looking forward to even more XBL announcements. :) We all know that the UI is amazing, they don't have to change a lot there.

...Rapid update schedule? o_O

Wow - that is a great ad. It really shows off the UI, while showcasing some of the great apps and games. Smart to emphasize NetFlix since it is missing from Android.

Yeah it's a great advert, really do think WP7 will be my next phone OS unless Android pulls something magic out of the bag.

Question on the zune insider podcast asked why the zune hd has a better messenger client. They were going to answer but then decided they would answer on the wp7 podcast. Haven't listened to that yet to find out if they did.

I would really like some news on a decent client, I find it quite a glaring omission.

Which is what I don't like about gaming on the WP7. There's no reason for that (aside from wanting to make more money). Xbox Live games on Windows Phone 7 are not really better or offer more than games on iOS. I don't really care about Achievements and even if I did, I don't think they're enough to justify a premium price. I just don't like the idea of having premium priced content just because they want to make more money when I could get the same game for ¼th of the price on the competitor's platform.

And Need for Speed has to go away from the top of that list!

It is hard to say Microsoft price policy is wrong. After all, there is a new slang to say something is underpriced to hell, it was been "iphoned". Prices on iphone are cheaper because big companies are simple trying to get extra attention and kill the competition. It is hard to sustain an ecosystem when everyone tries to get this type of attention. It is specially hard for small developers. Basically the appstore still works this way because it has a huge userbase, and a lot of small sales still represent a profit in the end (something WP7 do not have and why developers would release games for it without expectiong profit). So a game has to be a hit in appstore to really get money, there is no much room for niches. And the release schedule from Microsoft is more controlled than Apple, games have "slots" when can be release (on each wednesday, and 1 to 3 per week). This way they won't cannibalize the sales from each other.

I agree that is hard to pay US$ 3 for something that is under US$ 1 in a competitor plataform, but based on content, the wrong side is the US$ 1 one.

He said they'll answer it next week.

New version of Messenger by Miyowa due 1st March

Hi All!

I just wanted to let you know that the newest version of Messenger By Miyowa will be out on March 1st. You’ll have the dynamic tile, where your online/offline status and notification to new messages will appear, and as many of you have requested, you’ll be able to customize the background/wall paper. You can choose the ‘original’ versions (currently on the app), black, white or one of your own photos/images from the phone.

More updates on their way – we’re working hard on it!

Thanks again for your recommendations and requests – please keep them coming
http://blog.miyowa.com/?p=1161

And from the comments:
Hello,
Thanks for your message
So, firstly, just to let you all know, I forgot the feature ‘conversation clean-up’ – so, this release will also include the ability to clear conversation history.
To answer some more of your questions Azeall22, we’re always working on stabilizing the app, and fixing crashes. WP7 is a whole new OS, so even though our developers are experts, please be patient with them – they’re really enjoying discovering the OS, and are producing some really cool stuff – they will get there!
As for the auto sign out, that’s actually an intended feature – but we have increased the time before auto log out twice, and we’ll see if we can improve it further.

As always, cheers to all who have written comments and sent emails – the more details the better it is at helping us make improvements – please keep them coming! Cheers!
Wow. "They'll get there"? They know that their app is the official WLM for WP7, right?

I was going to get an Android phone but now that Noki is going to bring out Windows phones I'm wondering if I should wait and see the Nokia offering?

If you're willing to wait until Fall, sure why not? Nokia makes great hardware. That said, I wouldn't wait.

Okay I'm confused as fuck. Where did those screens for games like Super Monkey Ball and Ghostscape come from?

I even went looking for new stories about it, and all the stories just have the 6 games from that little promotion MS is doing.

The poster above said those pics were among other games. Where can I find a list?

I think I'm going to get the Samsung Focus. I was thinking of getting the HTC Arrive since I have the SERO plan (it would be $50/month with the Arrive), but I like how thin and bright the Focus is. I do have a few questions though:

1. What SD card works the best for the Focus? I am not planning to spend more than $50 on the card, so it may have to be 16 or 8 GB.

2. For the Focus owners out there, how do you like it?

While I understand your frustration, it seems like an open, helpful and honest statement by the dev.

There's a list on xda developer site but it hasn't been update in awhile. I used to have 16gb sandisk in mine but after 3-4 weeks it keep rebooting the phone randomly. (Apparently Captivate have this same problem so it's probably something Samsung did).

From reading various forum, it seems 32gb is having the most problem so I wouldn't go over 16gb at this point.

Restoring the phone even without the back up is really not that bad aside from the app. If you downloading app I would suggest do it with zune software so that everything will be redownload and you just have to manually delete stuff you don't want. Unless you prefer to redownload the app as you remember you need or want them.

Despite my bitching, it is a good phone. It's very light and well built. The screen is to die for. I love mine despite the SD card issue. (I don't have SD card in mine now and while living with 8gb is a bitch, I rather not have my phone constantly rebooting.)

Oh currently it doesn't do the update due to problem Samsung phone have.

FYI, just realised that my Samsung Omnia is now unbranded after I downloaded the updated firmware a month back. Think that new firmware made it work fine with the update - and the benefit of being unbranded is that you can download even if your carrier doesn't push it.

Yeah, it seems you unwittingly figured out one way to ensure that you get every MS update immediately. Like Android and its Nexus phones, unlocked wp7 devices get the updates without delay. And considering that ATT apparently was blocking even this minor update, I think I need to figure out a way to unlock my Focus. So far online, all I found was sites where you have to pay to unlock, and I don't trust them enough to hand over money.

OK; say I do this fw update. How do I backup my phone with all its settings? And how is there a good site to talk me through the update process? And we´re still talking the fw update, thats not officially from Samsung, right?

Well, I didn't backup my phone when I did the firmware update - I had to reinstall everything...

It's not available through Samsung, I don't think. But that said it's just the latest firmware they're shipping. I really can't remember the site I used, but if you have a few moments to run through this thread again for some of my posts I think I link to it. :s

Not ideal, I know!

Yeah, I saw the link, but am still a bit hesitant, as this looked like it came from some random blog or something.
Having to reinstall everything is a big downer though.

Yeah, that's nuts.

In contrast, Microsoft's WLM app for iOS is excellent.

Baffling.
Isn't it currently just literally impossible to build a great Instant Messaging App for Windows Phone 7? There's no multitasking or socket support (finally understand what that even means :p) which is essential for building IM-Apps. Both these things are available on iOS. Even if the best App Dev out there spends months and months developing a great IM App for WP7... it'll be shit. Especially compared to what's available on the iPhone.

I'm holding on to my Droid Inc until WP7 phones 2.0 come out, including an updated OS with multitasking, tethering and the like. I'm sort of done with the rat race of who has the most cpus, and hardware specs. My work pays for my phone and my best friend manages our entire companies account. I can have any phone I want, anytime for free. That includes 4G offerings out there now.

To me its pretty meh, I'm tired of upgrading my phone every 3 months and I'm tired of dicking around with Android. Its a fantastic OS, but its too much like a computer and I do not want that kind of experience in my pocket. Phone 7 really is quite a good balance in that regard, slight customization w/o all the overhead.

Pull phone out, click email, or click games, or internet or whatnot. I dont want to feel obligated to totally redo, root, flash rom, change res, download latest version for another phone type stuff on my phone.

Pull phone out, click email or click games. Thats it. That really all I do on my Droid Inc now, but why change? Simply because I think the WP7 interface, and GUI is leagues ahead of both Apple and Google.

This is just my opinion, so it doesn't mean much. But I'm patiently waiting for round 2.0 for WP7, both hardware and software-wise.

Hey guys...I'm in charge of our phone account at work, and we're looking to replace our 50 blackberries this spring. Most of our guys are inept to mediocre with technology, but unfortunately, all the smart phones are trending towards more complicated UIs.

I have a Droid and love it, but I know they won't be able to make that transition. For exchange emails, contact management, and make jotting notes, how would you say the WP7 line is holding up? We're on Verizon, so we're still holding out some hope that we get a handset soon.

Verizon will reportedly get the Sprint equivalent phone in the second half of March as that's when Nodo and WP7 on CDMA networks finally launches.

From demos, exchange e-mail looks really simple to use and setup.

A fan made ad is spreading the interwebs regarding WP7: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VHkPiU9YAQk

Looks a lot better than what Microsoft has been producing aside from the speed trial demo ads.

I don't see how the Trophy is equivalent to the 7 Pro, if it doesn't have a keyboard.

Anyways, Engadget got a picture of the phone today:

I hope they'll announce the phone soon.

It sure looks nice, but is too flashy and doesn't show much of the OS. The AT&T ad with the Focus was actually from Microsoft, so they got it.

I'm sure that the 7 Pro was also going to Verizon since Sprint's getting that.

The Trophy is a surprise.

Where did you hear that? HTC announced the Pro back in October or November for Sprint and Europe. Verizon was always supposed to get the Trophy.

I've always read it that Verizon and Sprint getting HTC 7 Pro.

We'll see what happens in March.

Well tomorrow flips us over into March. Should be a big month either pro or con for the platform. At anyrate it'll be interesting to see it all unfold.

PS: I bet you I get to this up and coming weekend again without a phone update for my Focus. :P

Yeah, but those are limitations that could be circumvented by a first party app...

I'd bet on that also. Not just because of the Samsung firmware fiasco, but At&t seems to have been blocking that first update as well.

Should be a good thing, because they can block only one update, iirc.

Or even an app from the phone manufacturer. Nokia should be looking into this. The lack of multitasking can be circumvented by push notifications (that's what's used in iOS actually). Socket support is more problematic for any third party manufacturer. It's also relatively expensive to keep the servers for the push notifications running and I doubt that WP7 has a user base that would be large enough support it. The first third party developer to deliver could charge a premium though. The first acclaimed iOS messaging app was priced at $15—that's high for the iPhone market especially for a feature users get free on their desktop computers.

I remember paying close to $40 for the Blackberry version of Beejive years ago...

About the bolded part - is that true? Are apps made by the phone manufacturer allowed to access private APIs?

I'm not sure, but I've tried a Flashlight App from the store and all it did was showing a completely white screen. The HTC Flashlight App I have uses the camera's flash (awesome).

Yup, it's true. I don't know to what extend, but they definitely have access to the camera and compass. LG phones have an AR, DLNA and panorama app. Don't know about the other OEM, but every one of them can customized the camera experience (change the default settings, create presets).

i'd have to say that, that ad is better than every Microsoft ad put out so far. mainly because it
appeals to the masses.
and by that i mean:
flashing lights - check
catchy music -check
show the home screen once - check.

That's cool. I'm all for anything that extends functionality.

I wonder what the licensing terms are for OEM-specific apps. I'm sure each vendor wants to keep their apps exclusive but I wonder if it's possible for a Samsung or an HTC to make a real backgroundable IM app and release it to the marketplace.

I currently despise the current campaign, "A phone that saves us from our phones." In today's market people want phones that keep you entertained, not that allow you to not have to use your phone. I feel as though the market for WP7 is people who want something fresh and different, or as MS sees it people who value things like Xbox and productivity via the Office suite (those two completely opposite propositions are a whole other issue) - and not people who hate having to use phones and therefore want to "get in and out and back to life."

There is so much disconnect between what they have, are trying to communicate and have even admitting to wanting to communicate. It's as if the agency assigned this slogan to WP7 from an axed campaign prior and didn't even try.

That video was much better. As I said there, it's something cool, something edgy, something aspirational. You see that and think "Holy hell, that looks really awesome. It can do a lot of stuff, too! What's this all about? That looks special."

MS should pull an Apple and fly that kid out to professionally recreate and air that ad.

Right, people like using their phones. Phones can do a lot of cool shit - why would you want to minimize that?

The new Samsung Focus one is a lot better because they ditch the idea of getting in and out quickly and actually show you the cool stuff WP7 has to offer.
