Windows Phone 7 |OT|

It's a shame that Nokia is leading their US WP7 campaign with the 710, it's a perfectly respectable device, but judging by its aesthetics it just looks like a cheap plasticky handset. That's an entirely unfair judgement, and in some ways the 710 is actually better than the 800 (FFC, SLCD vs pentile), but as flawed as the 800's hardware might be, nobody can deny it's an attention grabbing design.

Yea, they should have just opened by making a splash with the 800/900 instead of reminding us why Americans don't care about Nokia.

You know, it's not even the content of his post, but the tone. If it wasn't for the tone, I'd actually bother with a discussion about the points he made, because some of them are good and others could be worth discussing.

But coming in a thread like this, well knowing that it's visited by people who like the product, and screaming "Everything you like is SHIT!" like an idiot ... Nah, whatever. I'd rather read the little troll posts from Copernicus or dream. At least they're amusing.

I disagree, I prefer to have a poster come in, write a bunch of pent up misinformed garbage and leave rather than the once a week or so trolling from Copernicus (dream doesn't troll here). My main problem is people actually engage Copernicus on his bullshit and the conversation gets sidetracked.

This dude said his piece, and he'll go back to his blissful android powered existence. Like you, I would prefer it if he had done it in a way where we could actually engage him, but at least it's not a usual occurrence.

I actually sort of follow this thread, though not for any serious interest in WP7. Which is why I don't generally ever post in it. The only reason I replied to that post was that I saw it was my old Terabro posting it and that caught my attention. In the interest of not being banned, I won't waste anyone's time any further in this thread, but I would certainly like to invite Robobandit to PM me if he wants to talk about his Tuna. Or he could, you know, post in the huge thread we have about that phone in the OT.

As for Coperdickus, he trolls in every phone thread. Don't you guys dare think you're special or anything, because you're not. He trolls Android, iOS, WebOS, you name it and he trolls it equally! He's an equal-opportunity phone troll, which is why we love him. :3

Well stop adding shit to the list then.

We'll get dual core when you'll want quad core, 720p when you get 1080p phones, and LTE when Android finally has phones that last more than 3 hours on it. We'll be at 150k apps when Android hits a million, and with Matias simultaneously dissing iOS/WP7 and stealing ideas from them, we'll never reach feature parity.

I can't wait to see more hubs on Android and live tiles on iOS. The only question is, where will MS take the industry next. They now have the most influential niche OS since WebOS.

The real question is whether Windows Phone will live longer than WebOS did, or shorter. And there aren't any awards for having the big guys steal your ideas from your niche OS and implement them into their big dominant OSes. Matias Duarte said exactly that when he was asked why he joined the Android team and became a Google employee. He was tired of designing beautiful UIs for failed products. After he designed the Danger Hiptop (T-Mobile Sidekick), Helio Ocean, and WebOS, he was tired of always being on the losing team, so he joined the winning team. ICS already integrates many nice elements of his design philosophy, most notably the cards metaphor and task switching screen from WebOS which was arguably the most famous element of that dead OS.

Given the grave financial situation at Microsoft, the lack of importance of smartphones in the industry, the failure to secure at least one exclusive manufacturer, the lack of a roadmap past the spring software update, and the failure of the design language to gain traction in any of Microsoft's other flagship products, I'd say they'll be gone by next summer.

You gonna keep picking and popping, or do you prefer to continue posting bullshit and disappearing for a page or two? Why would you get banned? If you've followed this thread then you know these aren't blind fanboys here and we are more aware of the platform's issues than your other post gives us credit for. There is no perfect phone OS platform, but let's have a real discussion here if you really want to.

I've been using Android for two years now, lets do this.

BTW, I don't know if anyone caught it but..

Microsoft Reviewing The Windows Phone App Platform Developer Requests

Microsoft went through a bunch of the WP Dev recommendations and updated their statuses, changing a number of them to "Under Review" and put "very high" on the consideration list for future releases.

  • SMS Access API
    [*]Bluetooth Data Transfer APIs
  • Native SDK to support C++ Development
  • Skydrive API to backup user’s IsolatedStorage app data
  • Allow applications with push notifications to display them on lock screen
  • Allow creating screenshot from device
  • In-App Purchase/Payments for Marketplace apps
  • VPN Support
  • Write access to calendar/contacts

There was a bunch more stuff attached to the Native SDK one so you can hit the source link for details.

I'm kind of thinking most of these are shoe-ins for Apollo, but we'll see.

Kind of laughable that people are on there asking for stuff like Qt and OpenGL support though, lol.
That would be sweet. It pisses me off that Zune can display song metadata on my car's sync touchscreen ... but streaming apps like Slacker and Pandora can't. It just shows up on the lock screen.

Got my Lumia 800 (Cyan). Will probably regret it soon, but right now its beauty is still enough to keep me satisfied.

Secondapps looks really weird with other fonts.

Also, why am I too stupid to figure out WhatsApp? I know my friends are using it (on their iPhones/Androids), so how do I add them/start a conversation?

on favourites in whatsapp tap the name and message as if sms.

High five for another insecure cyan lumia owner! :D

For whatsapp just scroll right to the 'all' page, select your friend, select their number and send them a message, that will add them to your 'chats' page

Haha, I figured it out, I didn't know it used the phone numbers and hadn't added all of them. D'oh, stupid user.

Apart from that, I'm impressed so far. Setup was pretty easy, and the way it pulls information together feels so much more better than the "one app, one function" principle I'm used to from my iPod Touch.

I'm still missing some apps, and the Metro design can feel a little bit confusing if done wrong (i.e. Facebook looks a bit cluttered) but it's great to have something completely different that is still surprisingly intuitive to use.

Someone's excited.

I don't expect anything.

I don't expect major new announcements but I do expect a few things I'm interested in.... would expect to see some close to final windows 8 tablet designs shown off (one of the reasons I am going there this year is to pick my next tablet) and a little wp7 mango.

only a fan render but damn that's the sexiest tablet i've seen.

I've just brought a Lumia 800 for my GF, amzing phone I think, Im definately converting from iOS to WM7 when my upgrade comes,

A few questions tho, the one that is niggling with me is how do I hide the sim contacts in people??? its quite annoying have contacts like alan/1 as the title

Imported SIM contacts sync with Windows Live so when you're in the People hub, go to settings, then filter contacts list and uncheck Windows Live, hopefully that sorts it for you.

I like it better if only because there is a little less wasted space on the face of the phone. Haven't seen a Lumia 800 in person, but it looks as big as a Focus S with a half inch smaller screen. Design is really nice, but at least for me that's not a factor at all when looking at a phone.

I'm just starting to learn about W7 phones, and I was wondering if there's any estimate on when the Lumia 800 will be brought to the U.S. and for which carriers.

just hoping the the Lumina 900 is 4.5" screen

*i am pissed now I returned my titan (horrible call quality issue) as evidently HTC is acknowledging a possible call quality fix.

Here's hoping they give us something @ CES

@unknown soldier I've had tons of android devices.. og Droid, galaxy s, galaxy s 2, galaxy nexus

I like android for the freedom it provides for running custom roms and.kernels.. but windows phone is a better user experience. It is not even close, IMO.

I don't like the look of that Nokia, it reminds me too much of the HTC Trophy. I actually even like the look of the Trophy a little better. It's like a phone body inside a block. On the N800, the screen area blends in with the polycarbonate, which is better.
