Update:

It seems like you just can't search for phone numbers against contacts. It only does a name search. I guess I never realized this omission.

Question: is there a WP version of WhatsApp? My wife uses it on iPhone and I am wondering if there ia WP client that I can use to send her messsages.

From my news feed:
telekom-update.png

Yeah, I got the 8107 update. But not the battery fix update from Nokia, I think?

Edit: Oh, looks like something changed. Full charge capacity is now up to 1200 mAh (From <1000. Shouldn't it be something like 1500?). Battery life is still pretty shitty, though. Aw mayne, I was hoping for an update that made more of a difference. :-(

Words by Post is still the best word game on the platform.

My username is vanmardigan on that.

Edit: I prefer it to Words with Friends as well. No annoying full screen ads after every play, you get a points preview, and the options are better without having to do an extra menu.

I'll try Words by Post, I hit you up with a game. I'm terrible at this, enjoy your crushing victory.

I did a reset and now the battery life is like twice what it was before.

In case some of you guys missed it, Microsoft enabled the rest of the Bing Vision features in some European countries. You can now scan barcodes!

Ciao, purchased by Microsoft in 2008, operates online-shopping portals in France, UK, Spain, Germany, The Netherlands, Italy and Sweden, and Bing Vision is now available in all of these countries. Bing Vision was originally introduced as built-in functionality to quickly compare retail and online prices, replacing the need for additional applications like RedLaser. Microsoft quietly enabled the additional markets this week so let us know if you spot the new scanning features in other European countries where Ciao isn't available.

How do you like the Lumia and the Windows Phone OS?

How do you like the Lumia and the Windows Phone OS?
I think that it's awesome. I had tried a HD2 my mate modded with WP7, and that sold me on the OS.

The Lumia is a really solid phone. The build quality and how it looks is amazing. It runs like a windows phone, and the nokia additions like maps and drive are nice, especially here in denmark where MS has decided that bing shouldn't work.

I wasn't impressed with the battery life, but it did not seem worse than the average smartphone, and now it looks like nokia has fixed something (I did a reset yesterday, and since then the battery drain seems to have been reduced a lot, but i'm not totally sure yet).

I think that there is some auto-white-balance issue with low light, but i guess that i can survive until nokia fixes that.

(I had a nokia 5800 before so I might be a nokia fanboy and/or be super impressed with an actual smartphone).

By reset do you mean you turned it off and on again or you factory reset the device?

More truth from Eldar: He's saying that existing devices can't be upgraded to the next major Windows Phone release.

And this time, Brandon Watson can not dispute the claim!

BrandonWatson
Was asked to dispute another Eldar claim. Groan. Sure, bring enumerated list, and let's do them 1x1. He's certainly earned my time. #sarcasm

Why being sarcastic, when he could just say that it's not true? Windows Phone IS DOOMED!

I just wish I got all the relevant info we all want without all the BS. I guess it just comes with the gadget territory though. People will always be spreading their "rumors" or their "leaks" in which the company or companies involved will choice to deal with each rumor in it's own way.

Just makes it a pain in the arse to follow tech though with the ever constantly churning rumor mill. Just look at all the next gen console threads on the gaming side of things. I guess WP like everything else tech wise will just have to deal with this.

Ok the sound quality of my one note recordings has become shit. I think the sound in videos still is like it used to be, so I dont think it is the microphone's fault, which I originally thought. Can anyone compare the sound quality between onenote and videos, and see if there is a difference?

It will be a year since I had my Focus, so the upgrade will cost me a bit less. Hopefully it will have LTE.
I assume it will since Rogers is trying to promote it's LTE service, not sure on the coverage for that though.

I'm also not exactly sure on how they handle data plans for it, but I think my current plan would not work for LTE. I took a look at my employers corporate page for Rogers and the LTE smartphone plan is $50 for 10GB, which is about double what I currently pay for 6GB. Considering I rarely go over 2GB, I don't know if LTE is worth it for the cost.

i've heard his name before (Eldar), but i have no idea who he is

They had a 6GB LTE for $30 deal for a while. I heard old 6GB plans might work for it too but not entirely sure. With Bell and now Telus not charging extra for LTE I'm hoping Rogers will have to fold as well...

Also, May? Ugh. Hoping I can get an unbranded, unlocked one before then.

"Mobile-Review.com, editor-in-chief Analyst, MRG"

Eldar Murtazin, a Russian rumor-monger and blogger, who absolutely hates the Nokia+MS relationship and everything MS does. His love for Nokia isn't that strong either, after Nokia tried to get him for leaking the N8 early.
Nokia takes all matters relating to the security of its products, confidential and proprietary information and intellectual property very seriously. Mr. Murtazin has been very public about his possession of unauthorised Nokia property. Several weeks back, we formally requested the return of all unauthorized Nokia property from Mr. Murtazin and he declined to respond. As a result, we have contacted the Russian authorities to assist us in the return of all unauthorised Nokia property.

Some say he's also a consultant for Samsung, which wouldn't be that surprising. It certainly looks like he has some sources in that company (same with Nokia).

He's never been a 100% reliable source, but the shit he spews since last year is really entertaining.

The truth about the Apple v. Samsung lawsuits:
Eldar Murtazin
Apple lawsuit against Samsung isnt about current/old products. Thats the battle between iPhone 5 and SGS3 (Autumn 2011). So similar phones

About the Galaxy S3:
Khalid Asiri
@eldarmurtazin can you please confirm if the SGS3 going to be released on 2011 Autumn ? if yes .. does it have better screen resulotion ?

Eldar Murtazin
@Azdian yes

Eldar, the Windows Phone insider:
Eldar Murtazin

WP7 Mango Update - according to design guideline there no need to put hardware buttons on front. Samsung, Lg, HTC will have such phones

Stefan Constantine
ummm then how will people activate the multitasking, go back to the home screen, etc.?

Eldar Murtazin
@GJCAG hardware buttons :) screen will have software emulations

Stopped following him after that. But hey, this is fun, so here's more.

Andy Lees left the WP team in December, but I'm sure he'd love to be part of the negotiations for Nokia's phone unit.
Eldar Murtazin

Steve Balmer, Andy Lees and Stephen Elop, Kai Ostamo will meet in Las Vegas to finalize agreement about Nokia smartphone unit. Bye Nokia

Just one comment. Apple iPhone 3Gs wont be upgradable to iOS 5.x. iPhone 4 will.

More about the Galaxy S3
In a tweet, he said that the S3 would sport “HD resolution, 12 mpx camera, sw tweaks, android 4 – i like my new phone. Eager to see official announcement in Barcelona.”
(This one is rumor against rumor, but I give The Verge a bit more credibility) E: Oops!

Honestly, I can't wait for this one, though.
Going to write a big big article about ms and windows phone. With facts/data i'll show why its already fail and nothing happens in future

I guess the blogosphere loves him, because he generates pretty good headlines.

if I buy a lumia 800 will I be able to upgrade to windows phone 8? I already got burned by el goog

I don't think anyone knows at this point. Mobile World Congress is this month which is where WP7 was announced, so if you're worried, you could just wait to hear if there's any official word. I'd hope you could though, but we'll see.

So I´m finally a Junior*

And this is my first post on GAF from my Optimus 7, and I´m so jealous because there´s no word on when Mexico is going to have some of that Lumia love, and my contract is almost over =(

*So happy after several years of waiting =)

I'm looking to make the jump to a Windows phone but I want to find the right option :
question is fairly simple yet complicated but google wasn't of much help in this...

Is there a good WP7 phone with touchscreen and physical keyboard available in Europe apart from the HTC HD7 pro ?
I've read about a HTC Prime and a Stratosphere but I think those are just rumors ?
Is there anything released recently or coming up really soon that I should take a look at ?

Thanks!

Welcome! I hope you are using secondapps.com/neogaf to browse the forum on your phone.

walked by a t-mobile store and guess what? the nokia lumia 710 was their premier device. one 710 poster on one window and another pic of t-mobile's spokesperson (kari?) holding a 710 on the other window.

hopefully, this is a sign of things to come. nokia though needs to give t-mobile a hero device. the 710 won't cut it for me and many others.

Wait the venue pro has an AMOLED screen? Wow I did not know that.. It's a first gen WP right?

Yeah it does. I love the device, but it has some glaring issues like an enormously short battery life, no internet sharing, and quite an inaccurate gps sensor. But the keyboard is nice and tactile, it looks very pretty(i'd say the best looking of the 1st gen WP7 phones), and the loudspeaker is pretty good.
