Windows Phone 7 |OT|

Having the right widgets set up isn't really the intent of the contest. That could just as easily be done with a windows phone. They should have ruled that out.
I don't think you read the article, because that's exactly what the Windows rep did.

After a three-second count down, I hit the power button on my phone and said “DONE!” out loud. I had disabled the lock screen entirely, which is a rather awesome out-of-the-box feature of Android that takes you straight to the home screen with a single push of the power button. I didn’t even need to touch the screen, since the two weather widgets were already there.

My opponent finished a split-second later. She had two live tiles on her home screen displaying the weather of two different cities as well. Why does it take longer on Windows Phone? She had to perform two actions. First, she hit the power button to turn on the screen. Second, she had to swipe away the lock screen. That’s pretty much as fast as it gets on that platform. Windows Phone takes two interactions. Android takes just one.

I'm thinking about doing that Windows Phone challenge thing. Pick up a cheap BB and head down to the Microsoft Store in South Coast Plaza.

Microsoft and Nokia Investing in Mobile App Development Program at Aalto University

To drive innovation and business opportunities in Finland's mobile ecosystem and beyond, Microsoft Corp. and Nokia will each invest up to 9 million Euros into a newly established mobile application development program at Aalto University during the next three years. The AppCampus program has been set up to foster the creation of innovative mobile applications for the Windows Phone ecosystem, and in addition Nokia platforms, including Symbian and Series 40, to create a new generation of self-sustaining mobile startups.

I wonder if they know ;)

To hell with Angry Birds. Terrible game anyway x.x I just want Words with Friends and other multiplayer games my friends play on Android / iOS. I don't care if there are multiplatform versions when my friends aren't on them!

Man I never "got" angry birds. I ve seen tons of games better than that shit. Man I will never get the "avarege consumer"

also Korey whether i am serious or not, I still understand that thanks to all this, someone is getting canned. And it's prob that one employee who has to deal with tons of people who all claim to be "winners". Blaming a whole company is a stupid thing to do, yes someone at microsoft screwed up but blaming Microsoft as a whole is so vague. It's like if I blame Apple for a shitty third party app. Or blaming amazon if your iteam comes broken in mail. And Microsoft knows they've made a mistake and are offering a rematch. It's now the authors fault for not taking the offer.

It's Microsoft's fault for not controlling their contest and the employees that run the contest properly. The concept itself isn't flawed, but it's quite different when it's run by a guy who knows what he's doing and in a certain position of authority vs. asking random employees to do it.

But there's just one big Microsoft and everyone does everything. Makes it clean and simple. So yeah, Microsoft totally sucks.

Anyway, it's all over the blogosphere and the PR damage is done. Thank God we already have a thread about this.

#smokedbywindowsphone doesn't scale very well. It wad a good idea and well executed by Ben, but they need to just cut the footage into commercials and move on. Especially on Android, there are ways to set your phone to to win specific challenges.

Agreed, and one of the reasons it was well executed was because Ben has a good knowledge not only of the strengths and weakness of WP but also of the other OSes and for that he knows better than to put a WP against an Android phone in tasks it had no natural advantage (in this case a live tile and a widget serve the same purpose), but to expect the same level of common sense on all retail employes was really naive from MS.

Contract is up middle of April, guess I'll be getting a new phone and switching to ATT for that price. Don't have any other options up here and ATT can't be any worse than what I have currently.

Anyone know anything about keeping your number when you switch carriers?

It's simple and painless, they'll do it for you.

Be sure to say you want the activation fee waived for switching carriers.

Looks like Titan II confirmed for 04/08 as well, $200.

Not sure who would pay $200 for a Titan when you could get the Lumia 900 for $100...

Why don't you buy the international version?

I'm dumb and completely forgot about that lol! But now that you mention it, an LTE phone could be somewhat future proof because there are rumours that Telcel (my carrier) will have LTE network as soon as this month (sadly those rumours not include the 900)

I wouldn't hold my breath about using a LTE phone from a different country. Unlike GSM (4 bands) or UMTS (5 bands)...

LTE has 43 bands, of which 20 are used by carriers worldwide. (ie AT&T uses bands 4 and 17)

I have an possible update on off-contract pricing for the 900.

As the phone is not fully updated in our system, I can only see the actual cost of the device for us, not the MSRP we sell it for. I'm showing a cost of $420 for the 900. To put this in context, the Focus S cost is $479 with an MSRP of $549. Going by that, and the pricing is on other devices, I would venture a pretty educated guess that the 900 will have an MSRP of $499. Don't hold me to that as fact, but it seems likely.

Thought the same thing. Even beyond the WP platform that seems expensive for what you are getting. $199 and above is like the next super phone, and this isn't really that.

$499 off contract is tempting. I can sell my Focus S and get most of the way there.

You have an S though. Will the 900 really be an upgrade besides LTE? You have a mango device aka 2nd Gen.

I sort of feel like a broken record, but beyond LTE I fail to see why anyone would upgrade now to a new WP if you already have a WP before Apollo hits unless you have broken your old phone.

You're a broken record AND you're wrong. LTE is a big deal, a better camera is a big deal, a better, more sturdy design is a big deal, Nokia specific apps are a big deal, a bigger battery is a big deal. Enough to pay $500 for? That's subjective, but to me it wouldn't be worth it. If I can get it for less than $200 after I sell my Focus S, though, it may be a different calculus. Although Apollo is out this year, my upgrade isn't until next year, and my Focus S isn't gaining any value.

The Nokia apps are quite nice, not sure they necessitate an early upgrade though.

Looks like the guy gets a laptop and a phone: http://www.theverge.com/2012/3/26/2903308/windows-phone-challenge-smoked-by-controversy

Am I the only one who thinks it is a bit crazy he won because of disabling his lockscreen? Who in the real world actually does that? Both phones should have the same features enabled inorder to be a fair test no?

I think they handled the situation poorly ... but I agree, he shouldn't have won.

He openly admits he doesn't normally have his lockscreen disabled. He set it up specifically to win the contest. That obviously is not in the spirit of what this entire campaign is attempting to show.

Good on Microsoft and the prompt fix to rectify the controversy. Whether the participant should or shouldn't have had his lock screen enabled is besides the point, Microsoft took a negative headline throughout tech blogs and turned it into positive PR.

The turn of events with this piece of news + the Nokia 900 100$ price point = win win for Microsoft.
