Microsoft's rules prohibit any jailbroken/rooted phones, and disabling the lock screen is a stock feature of Android so he met the criteria in this case.

I don't think it's fair for either of them to have already pre-configured their phone for this task. A more fair way to approach this challenge would be to have someone in the crowd name a random city and then have both of them see who can bring up the weather info faster.

In case it wasn't clear, I agree they should have done it from scratch (and WP7 would likely win - it would be a good showing of how simple the deep tile linking is). I think it was a bad test.

All I'm saying is even if it's a stock feature ... the fact he doesn't normally use that (and only configured it that way to try and win) defeats the purpose of the competition in general. The point of the tests (even if this one was shit) is to show how a lot of tasks can be done faster/simpler on WP7. Setting your phone up in a manner you wouldn't normally use it just to win is crap IMO.

That notification center is actually inferior to the iOS one when you consider that the iOS one can be brought up at anytime, whereas this one is only accessible from the home screen. Unless my understanding of the iOS one is off.

C'mon, we all know I'm right.

I dont know man, Apple didn't think much of Android's notification system until they wholesale copied it. The team is aware of where they lag behind the competition, and they saw Apple capitulate and create a notification center. They know they have to do it too. I think live tiles are fantastic, but toasts need a place to go.

I have located a dude on Craigslist selling two lg P505 phoenix froyo phones, I am going to see if he will sell both for 80 or something close to that.

C'mon, we all know I'm right.
no reason to destroy dreams.

The notifications thing is something I really miss from my BlackBerry :( Not having an icon on my lock screen for WhatsApp and Facebook is really annoying.

And goddamn if they had a Lumia 900 as part of that promo I'd go down to Seattle right now...

No MS stores in the NY area? Seriously??

In general there are hardly any MS stores easy of the Mississippi. There are like two random stores in NJ and a store in the Atl. Most of the stores are all just West Coast stuff like Phoenix, LA, San Fran, Seattle etc... and MS doesn't really seem intent on pushing the stores either.

I actually posted a pic earlier in the thread when I randomly came across the Atl store, and was surprised. Store itself is really nice and well put together ala the Apple Store model. If it wasn't such a cluster funk for MS service wise with so many brands I think it would be wise for MS to really expand out like Apple has. Gives the product a really good feel similar to Apple's stores verses all the other random places like Walmart or a Best Buy where electronics are just sort of thrown around and "there". (if that makes any sense)

There will be a bunch of stores in the eastern half of the country by the end of 2014

Can't you try out a phone in any electronics store?

They are all fake dummy at the best buy near me.

A lot of stores are like this especially for phones. I know unless I go into a carrier store or say the Apple store everywhere else just has dummy phones set up. Makes trying to shop for a phone worthless at a place like idk Target unless you know what you already want.

Yeah I've seen that before. I just haven't heard anything else really on this. Maybe it's just not news or they just are slow at getting things in gear.

I'm sure it will go quicker over time. The more stores you have open, the more internal candidates you will have to manage and start up new stores.

Schedule like this would hit their target.
7 in 2011
10-15 in 2012
20-25 in 2013
35-40 in 2014

So from their Facebook page, it looks like 2225 people have taken the challenge and 26 have won laptops.

I wonder how many of the losers were people with shitty phones looking for a free upgrade or how many had a nice phone they didn't want to trade in.

Only 3 days left in the contest and 10 per store.

I'm sure they're expecting a few flippers.

People need to understand this! It's not THAT crazy, and honestly I bet with so many flippers it's already gone by now. This is akin to any other of the big sales that happen that we hear about on a place like say CAG or Slickdeals. It's limited per store, and if you aren't already on it you've probably missed out already.

Not to deter anyone, and it would be nice to have some fresh faces around the GAF thread!

There are 10 laptops per store but I haven't seen any numbers on the number of phones.

If someone really, really wanted to know how many phones they gave away.

If you send an email to SBWP@microsoft.com within 30 days of March 29, 2012, we will provide you with a list of winners that receive a prize worth $25.00 or more.

Should the contest get it's own thread?

No if only because we already have that thread about the Android confrontation. If that hadn't happened I'd easily say yes. Now that thread would just end up being a cluster. Goes to show you no matter who's right or wrong with that whole deal that it's bad PR either way.

The beauty of being in charge of phones in my organization. I can use any line to do my own upgrade. Lumia 900 here i come and whatever Apollo phone hits later this year.

Clearly, Microsoft doesn't intend to lose to Smoked by Windows Phone challengers very often. The campaign was designed to highlight the speed and efficiency by which Windows Phone can accomplish normal, everyday tasks — and with a $1,000 PC on the table for every challenger, the stakes are high. Sahas Katta of Skatter Tech struck the promotion in one of its weak spots, loading his Galaxy Nexus with homescreen widgets capable of displaying weather for two different cities; when he was able to get to the widgets faster than his Windows Phone competition in a Microsoft Store, he was disqualified for vague reasons, though Microsoft later made good on the offer.

Indeed, Android weather widgets were one of the weak spots identified by Microsoft before the promotion even began. For the specific challenge Katta was given — "Real Time Information with Live Tiles" — customers are asked to "check the weather both at the store and in Las Vegas, or see if a movie is playing at their favorite theater." The guide goes on to warn that "Android users have access to Widgets that can, if properly configured, display the weather and other information in real time."

But the risks weren't limited to the weather challenge. In "Pocket to Picture to Post," challengers are required to take a picture and upload it to Facebook as quickly as possible. Staff are cautioned that the iPhone 4S "has a similar feature and a very fast camera, so it is a serious contender in this category." Amusingly, Microsoft also tells them to watch out for HTC's lowly Status, a portrait QWERTY Android device offered on AT&T:

You should also steer clear of this challenge against an HTC Status (i.e. the Facebook Phone) as it also has a built in pocket-to-picture-to-post feature and a camera that switches on even faster than Windows Phone.

In the "Update Your Status across Multiple Social Networks" challenge, users must post a "mutually agreed upon status" to both Facebook and Twitter. Here, Store employees are warned about a "power user scenario" that "isn't very common": you can use Selective Tweets to link Facebook to Twitter such that posting to Twitter alone with an "#fb" hashtag will post to Facebook simultaneously. Here, Microsoft says this "could result in a tie." The tiebreaker? "Challenge customers to update their profile picture to those same networks," a task that Microsoft seems more confident it'll handily win.

That's not the only risk with this challenge, though — Microsoft also points out that TweetDeck and Siri can both be configured to update Facebook and Twitter simultaneously. It's unclear how (or if) the company expects employees to confirm whether users plan on using something like TweetDeck ahead of time, but it does recommend engaging the customer in conversation before the challenge ahead of time: "this interaction puts them at ease and gives you valuable information on how to guide the conversation and challenge."

It seems that Microsoft's well versed on where it can't smoke the competition, so it's unclear how Katta's run ever got to the point where he was offered the weather challenge. It seems possible that the store only realized its mistake after the fact and sought to make the loss go away — we can't imagine they plan on letting too many $1,000 PCs walk out of the door.

Let us know how it goes.

Soooo they are ALL out of phones! You won't actually get your phone until they come in stock. They are giving $10 gift cards to hold u over until they get more stock. I wasn't even able to sign up for the challenge because they already have too many people ahead of me. The cut off time was supposed to be at 7 but since so many people came to the store for the challenge they cut it off early. There were 30 to 40 people with a number waiting on their turn. The reps anticipate they'll still be doing challenges after the mall closes. Told me to come back tomorrow. Sucks I'll have to make a second trip but hey its a free phone!

hes always been.

also this needs to become real asap.

I'm on board with a decent notification history board to the left. They have to have something cooking with a left pivot UI wise for WP8, whether its something like the Zune HD's left pivot of recent items, and commonly used tasks, or a search the phone/quick find feature, something has to be brewing.

Concerning the Smoked by Windows Phone contest, it was foolhardy to tackle challenges that require either user to pre-set their phone to win. Focus on the genuine UI/built in social networking/camera taking tie ins that make the young platform stand out a bit from everything else out there. As a simple challenge it really was an effective way to emphasize the genuine UI advantages. They should have kept the stakes low too. Higher the stakes and you make everyone hyper competitive. It was a dumb move.

Glad to hear confirmation on the Lumia 900 going for $99, plus the off contract price not being upward of $800. If there ever were a test on how the platform will do versus everything else they've been through up till now, a top of the line, Apple level of design, stand out phone for a great price, will be a pretty good litmus test. I'm personally interested in what guns Nokia brings to the marketing table. They seem to get it still, and maybe, just maybe, teach Microsoft a thing or two on how to get people excited about a product. Maybe.

My product upgrade is in November, the 900 is crazy tempting, but I've got my head down, Apollo or bust.

That's good news. That means they are going to keep giving out phones verses just the usual omg special is happening you almost need to camp out like it's black friday run!

IF they give away enough phones this could actually be a sizable bump for the platform for MS. Even better if they are giving away some of the better new devices (I haven't heard what phones are being given away besides the 710 on T-Mobile).

#smokedbywindowsphone doesn't scale very well. It wad a good idea and well executed by Ben, but they need to just cut the footage into commercials and move on. Especially on Android, there are ways to set your phone to to win specific challenges.

Totally agree, Microsoft deserve to get burn by this ... it should be one of those one time stunt and move on. Taking it worldwide and have it run by people other than Ben is just asking for this backlash.

Slickdeals said:
Phones available for selection:
ATT: HTC Titan, Samsung Focus S
T-Mobile: HTC Radar, Nokia 710
Verizon: HTC Trophy

So sayeth slickdeals.

Hopefully I have some luck tomorrow as well.

This deal is on slickdeals. 90% of the people going are swapping out broken phones to sell the new phone. 90% may be low

Lol, i hope people dont think they are pulling fast one on MS. Do you think MS didn't think people would do this? They get a big number of "smoked" phones, and they get their phones in people's hands. Some might sell it, but since they take your current phone, it might be a pain for some. Better PR than just giving them away.

Wait...siri can update profile pictures? o.O

How's that any different then having a tile set for weather? If someone doesn't check weather that often, then having a weather tile on the main screen is considered "setting your phone up in a manner you won't normally use it."

If anything he leveled the playing field.

Doesn't matter. I mean for them to sell it that means their also must be a buyer. Either way the phones are out there in the public's hands. Bigger issue will be if people can't sell the phones and just decide to keep them as secondary devices or back up phones. MS needs people to be using these as their main phone.

Since I'll be in Boston for the Black and Cyan 900 I think I'll wait and checkout that white 900. Maybe the first white phone I ever buy. Plus any possible quirks will be found out by then.
