Natsume 5

another great episode easily up there with the likes of the first two seasons. natsume's back and it's beautiful. *manly tears*

If only you could see Geneon's list. :P
oh shit lol, i can't even begin to imagine what that must've looked like.

edit:

I will never forget the truth bomb when the Geneon dude said Heat Guy J cost them the same amount of money as Fullmetal Alchemist did to Funimation.
oh my god lmao

I liked Kurau, but lolololololololol

Damn @ Air gear.

As for Heat Guy J: it wouldn't be surprising since they hyped the hell out of that thing (IIRC the eps would appear on MTV2 and all that stuff)

Ano Natsu de Matteru 04:

Remon is awesome. Always knows what buttons to push with Ichika! XD Kaito's imagination continues to amuse and lead to more funny. XD Both Ichika and Kaito are at a loss for words because of the events that ended Episode 3, and Ichika's primary concern is that
she's going to end up leaving. Or rather she knows she has to, which would make leaving Kaito behind even harder if she started dating him. But as Remon dutifully points out, Woman-A has a rival in Girl-C. :-P Though I love how Tetsuro also calls Kanna "Girl-C" XD. And suddenly, a new woman enters the show! Manami-san eh? She'll obviously be an acquaintance of one of the characters, family or something.

... High School of the Dead plays in theaters here? XD

Manami gets super awesome bonus points for reading the situation and provoking Ichika. And it turns out she's Tetsuro's bodacious older sister. I knew it! XD

And Ichika is quite the slave driver. I love this show.

Why isn't it next week yet??? >:(

There's a reason why Heat Guy J is the butt end of many ANN Cast jokes. That and Rumiko Takahashi Anthology were some of the many colossal failures of Geneon Entertainment.

Also, Funimation probably not doing well if they have to cancel a DBZ release.

Wow thats some expensive trash.

I remember they had tons of ads hyping up Coyote Ragtime Show on ign and plus you could watch some of the episodes on ign.

From the reactions to Nisemonogatari's latest episode, now I don't know how will people see the 'toothbrush related' scene present on the second volume. Can have an even worse reception? Will they go over that scene quickly or on the other hand focus on it heavily? Exploitable enough?

I needed a reminder about that soundtrack that never came... would have been cool to take for that little lullaby (I wanted more versions of it as well).

I bought....ten of those.

Why the hell did ADV have to pay so much to license Guyver when they supposedly co-produced it?

Neither Air Gear nor Kurau actually surprise me all that much in their costs. Oh! Great was pretty popular at the time (post-Tenjou Tenge anime) and Kurau was licensed so soon after it started airing and on a groundswell of post-FMA fan support; I expect ADV went in with a stupid price to stop Bandai or someone similar from getting it.

Of course, the fact that they licensed Kurau so early probably backfired as it meant no-one ended up watching it so it got no hype (the date on that payment doesn't tally up with the date they announced the license). I actually think the show's pretty great, but it's hardly one of the great successes of our time.

Some of the costs just really don't make sense in a relative sense, either. I can understand Gonzo shows being overpriced - but why was Pumpkin Scissors the most expensive of the three purchased in 2007 and NHK so cheap, when any amount of market research would have revealed that NHK was likely to be the more popular property? Why did Tokyo Majin, a video game adaptation so uninteresting that it only aired in shittacular quality on Animax, command such a high price?

With all that said... can you imagine any new KyoAni series commanding a mere $11,000 per episode or so? And Air is pretty much the only one I've actually enjoyed, too.

How big is Chiaki Omigawa's role in Space Pirates?
She plays the best character in the entire show. It's the whole reason I even picked it up in the first place.
Maybe that's why I dislike the pacing, because she hasn't been in it much ;_;
Forget that. I've heard a juicy rumor that she landed the lead role in this: http://www.starchild.co.jp/special/nazokano_x/

I hope it's true! :D

I'll buy 50 if it is! Especially if she's voicing Urabe.

I will let anime know she is the savior it needs by using my wallet.

Remon, the destroyer of thin mechanical pencil tips. Such evil knows no bounds. Kaito should fotget about the alien and go after
his freinds hot sister

The new season of Natsume and Rinne no Lagrange are worth checking out.

It seems they'll only have four episodes to adapt that second volume, so I imagine they won't be able to turn that scene into its own very special episode.

I had no idea this was getting an adaptation... *Sighs* Gokujo, Mysterio GF X, Sankerea, all this shit's making it to the screen, but nothing legit. Who do I need to sell my soul to for an adaptation of Bambino! or Kurosawa?

Nothing, unless you're into Gintama. Which, in that case, you could also Watch Daily lives of HS Boys. It's a real backlog season.

Nothing amazing, but Rinne no Lagrange is worth checking out for now. Also Another is good since it kind of reminds me of Shiki albeit not as good.

That's fine in Star Trek, and is perfectly good here too.

But if you're say8ing that you don't like the pacing, it seems to me that what you are saying is that you do want more explosions and less details of spaceflight, but the way they're doing things is so interesting, I would not want it that way!

It's not just tapping on a keyboard, it's an electronic struggle between two ships, and it's got plenty of tension I think.

Yeah, it's not the absence of action that's the problem. Detailed depictions of technology are great, but that technology has to have some sense of presence beyond a monitor or technical terminology becomes pretty disposable. It may be more realistic for the operations of a spacefaring vessel to be controlled completely through a computer interface, but it's not engaging.

I don't think that anyone is criticizing the show just for using technobabble, but the sheer quantity of mundane ship operations being vocally described combined with the dullness of talking heads staring at monitors in a control room is a recipe for boredom. Some people think that the glut of terminology is "attention to detail", I just happen to disagree and think it's stretching for time.

About the hacking, I understand that for some people it might successfully create tension as a kind of cat-and-mouse game or detective story, but for me, I feel the same way about watching someone else do complicated computer work as I do watching someone else play video games: probably really fun for the person doing it, but far less so for me. The monitor should at least have some crazy representational shit going on like Radical Ed's computer in Bebop.

The best parts of the past couple of Mouretsu episodes were the scenes where more of the ship was on display and actual non-computer cooperation was required among the crew.
Fixing the stuck sail
was a high point, as was the
"pinging"
scene when it was deduced that
the ghost ship was an illusion
. That's the kind of stuff I want to see when the focus of the show shifts from characters to ship operations. Not just offhand references to technology, but its actual application.

I kind of agree with you that they should apply the tech a bit more than just talking about it, but they are starting to. I think it will start to have a better pace from here on out.
Its one of those slow burning series, but I can really see it "taking off" at this point.
Now that they are accustomed to the ship and how it functions, the real fun can begin. But I appreciate them taking the time to set things up, thats all.

I figured that'd it be easier to just do one bulk reply, but I think it's worth taking a look at the "cat and mouse" game being played between Marika's ship and their pursuers. In four episodes, they've had two "console technobabble" scenes and one scene in which they explain their plan to
use the ambush against their attackers
.

Think about probably the most famous cat and mouse battle in all of science fiction history - Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan. In the two battle scenes between Kirk and Khan, at no point do they dawdle around with the mundanity of running the USS Enterprise. When Spock uses the prefix codes against Khan the first time, there isn't a 5 minute scene explaining Starship encryption protocols. When they fight the second time, all Spock has to say is Khan's thinking is "two dimensional" and Kirk picks up on that cue and puts that plan into action.

This isn't genius writing, but it's a tight script that focuses the "exposition" of these action scenes onto the visuals. You don't need a 3d hologram showing the Enterprise rising above the Reliant while Spock explains the plan to everyone involved. All they needed to show was the actual model of the Enterprise moving on a different plane than the Reliant and you knew exactly what Spock meant by "two dimensional thinking".

And of course, the flip side is that the battle between the two ships isn't the thrust of the film anyway. The climax is when Spock asks Kirk if the ship is out of danger, before exhaling the most famous proverb in Star Trek history: "The needs of the many... outweigh the needs of the few... or the one".

When Star Trek is good is when it's about the people on the ships, not the ships themselves. At no point does Kirk order his crew to "remodulate shield nutations" or "rotate phaser frequencies" - common technobabble found in later Trek when they decided to introduce the Borg as common enemies.

I genuinely think there's a way that this show could be better than its name suggests. The scene between Marika and her mother in episode 2 points to a show that wants to rise above the sheer "averageness" of a show about technobabble. I mean, living up to the legacy of a parent is a story that any human throughout the history of the human race can relate to in some way. I'd like not to have to sit through exposition to get to the "good" stuff though.

there's no reason Shaft couldn't just add extra shit to the bd's to get their perverted otaku pandering on.

It's mostly a pretty average season:

Rinne no Lagrange
Ano Natsu de Matteru
Another
Daily Lives of Highschool Boys

are all varying degrees of above average to good. Bodacious Space Pirates has potential but its still a bit slow atm. Black Rock Shooter starts in a week, that could end up being one of the top shows this season.

And if you saw the first seasons there is also:

Nisemonogatari
Milky Holmes S2
Amagami SS+

Nise has had like 1 good episode, the other 2 have been pretty fun. That pretty much covers it I think.

Natsume S4 5

Not quite as strong as last week, but still a really good and sweet episode. I liked that we got to see what Natsume looked like through an outsider's eyes, and then the same situation again through his own. The transition between and contrasting of the two perspectives was well done. That ending theme kicking in as the episode draws to a close gets me every time.

Natsume's Book of Friends Season 4 is a must-watch. Outside that, I endorse Rinne no Lagrange, Daily Lives of High School Boys, Poyopoyo, and Ano Natsu de Matteru in that order.

Nothing amazing, but Rinne no Lagrange is worth checking out for now. Also Another is good since it kind of reminds me of Shiki albeit not as good.

I was just thinking while watching Another that I wish I was watching Shiki instead.

Then why bother posting?

Do you just have a reflex to reply whenever anyone says anything about Space Pirates?

He actually didn't respond to one of my posts like 10 pages back.

But, every show has to have that one guy. It's just a law of the universe, and will always be.

Nearly every piece of crap is getting an adaptation, I swear theses anime studio avoid anything of quality like plague when choosing something to adapt.

thanks for Bambino! reading it right now, really enjoying it.

go watch some old anime, stuff this season just aren't worth the time.

Still watching Chihayafuru, and will catch up on Nichibros, Rinne no Lagrange, and Nisemonogatari.

e: and man, I need to start Natsume and (finally) finish Kaiji s2.

And now for the bizarre older license of the day: Sentai has licensed Zettai Karen Children for digital and DVD release later this year. Where this came from, I have no idea.

Ahahahaha what the fuck?

Well, I bet they do a couple of season sets and it's dirt cheap. Maybe someone will buy it then?

I never watched beyond the first episode with the crotch lasers; did the show tone down the slightly uncomfortable fanservice much?

another day, another licensing announcment that isn't dennou coil ;_;
The Blu-ray set hasn't been out in Japan long, so don't be expecting any announcements anytime soon.

Edit: The distributor in Japan is Bandai Visual... yeah, so much for it making it over to America.

Karen is cool and everyone is okay with incest, so I think it'll be fine.

A word of advice: don't catch up to Nisemonogatari. At least, if you must watch episode 4, minimize the video and just listen to the audio track.

(And do start Natsume!)

Saint Seiya: The Lost Canvas 4-6

WVshM.jpg

Minos is legitimately intimidating in this unlike his OVA incarnation where he played second fiddle to Rhadamanthys (who also wasn't super intimidating). His fight with Albafica was actually intense and unpredictable.
The way Minos lost was a great gambit on Albafica's part and probably the best strategy seen so far in the franchise.
Unfortunately, it seems to have been meaningless in the end, but that's kind of expected considering what happens 250ish years later.

It's also cool that Unicorn has an actual role in this and doesn't suck like his equivalent in the next holy war. Would be nice if he got some neat fights.

Ano Natsu 4

4kKM7l.jpg

This feels like such an obvious drop that it almost speaks for itself.

So, I will say that, for a show that seems to be so much about mediation and re-mediation - from watching films to shooting films to the human imagination - it does a good job tying all of that together into a fairly safe and almost nostalgic romantic comedy. With all these layers of separation though, you can almost feel the angst train preparing to roll into the station.

It really is Super 8. :p
