I played it and was like OMG VNs finally arrived in the twentieth and a halfth century! Widescreen! High definition resolutions!

So yeah, do want. Hope somebody does a translation of the full game.

Black Rock Shooter Ep2

I'm half-way through the episode but I had to pause it to post about how over-dramatic this series is. The writing is really awful, and the DRAMAZ is really ruining the concept of a show about friendship and teenage feelings. It's just unrealistic, exaggerated and way too dramatized now. :/

That didn't stop people from liking Madoka though.

I hate myself. I shouldn't have watched noitaminA today. Never bet against Guilty Crown.

This is some of the worst noitaminA since the AnoHana & C Power Hour.

Black Rock Shooter Ep2 Part 2

The action sequences in the second half were really good. But GOOD LORD the drama is almost unbearable at this point. It's like watching a bad Korean drama with tons of over acting and terrible over-dramatic and unrealistic character interactions. The entire balance in the TV series is really, really off. In the OVA, the character scenes were subtle and pretty realistic, while the action sequences represented the repressed feelings and emotions in a dramatized way. Here, nothing is subtle, everything is over the top, everything is over-dramatic. I really... can't stand it. :/

Got my Madoka LE today. The box is shit...but everything is nice. Got a Valentine's card with Kyuubey on it with "Be be magical girl" on it. *shivers*

Sounds like everything I feared about the series is coming true :\

I agree.

Noein was unwatchable because of how messy and over-the-top the premise was.

There's nothing wrong with the premise, plenty of other works have handled similar premises with no problem (by which I mean certain 'books' have). The execution is clearly at fault.
I was planning on purchasing Mushi-shi (TV), Noein, and Planetes. What are your opinions on these?

I have watched Mushi-shi through Hulu and parts of Noein back when it aired on Ani-Mondays. I have also heard good reviews on Planetes.

The answer is to watch Mushi-shi and Planetes.

Also, fuck firehawk21 and his terrible jinxing opinions. Mari Okada has decided that what this series apparently really needs *is* more overt yuri. In fact, it's not even normal yuri, but creepy psychotic yuri-ism.

FML.

I kind of doubt Mari Okada has that kind of power. She probably originally wrote the show as a risque teen comedy and then got overruled.

:(. Sucks to hear. Loved the OVA.

So maybe you guys can help an anime (I GUESS I'm a) noob of sorts...?

Couple years ago, saw Lucky Star for some reason. I loved it and the humor, and the likability of the characters. I just recent finished Avatar for the first time (I know it's not anime) but when I was done, I was in an anime mood and heard the Cowboy Bebop opening credits song and that sold me right then and there (great music will do that for me...same with games and their music). I'm more than halfway through it now and really like it. I like the humor that it does have when it is funny, the drama that it dishes out, and the style.

So what else is an absolute must see considering those things? What are the big classics that everyone should see? What would I like based on what I've seen? Is there a list I should start of things I gotta check out?

Thanks for helping me get into this!

What they actually said at the preview event for Ep1-2 a few weeks back, is that Mari Okada had a gangbang with Yoshigaki and Imaishi, and the scripts resulted from that. So basically, unlike the OVA where the director co-wrote the script with the Haruhi author, the TV series is written by putting Mari Okada in the same room with the terrible new character designer, and the CG action director. I think that explains the end result well. :P

I'm just assuming that Mari Okada writes every series as the exact same teen comedy romp and it morphs into something completely different by the end, because it's funnier that way. She has her heart set on seeing her masterpiece animated, but it never works out the way she wants.

Imaishi, Okada, and the designer of ugly characters sure does sound like a bad way to write a script, though. I'm going to blame Imaishi because Ando was able to get acceptable work out of her and I never heard of the other dude.

That sounds like a disaster waiting to happen.

Well that's not exactly a big pool to choose from to determine your tastes, so we'll all probably just recommend stuff we like. I will say Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is a must. Also check out this thread.

I guess you might like Nichijou or Pani Poni Dash if you liked Lucky Star.

Fingers crossed for AKB0048! :D

Let this http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=173356 (and other) threads guide you through the dangerous waters of anime fandom, where pretty bad shows become popular for a time just to fade into the background after a few years.

Sorry for not being more specific at this point and time, but here are a few lists you might want to check out.

I'm sure some of the wonderful people (<--Not being sarcastic) here can be a little more helpful.

Riding Bean (Have you seen Gunsmith Cats?)

The plot is actually a lot more incolved than I gave it credit for.
Our protagonist is Ryan Gosling the Roadbuster, an amazing getaway driver for hire...with a heart of gold of course. He also eats pinaples WHOLE, and eats walnuts shell and all. SO BADASS is the appropriate way to describe him.

That's the amusing part. It's becomes surprisingly 'anime complicated' (read: needlessly convoluted) in the middle, and I enjoy it partly for that very reason. Of course, over the top gun fights and cool chase sequences help as well.

Obviously I can - I even own the DVDs - but somehow I haven't yet. And now I have 33 more episodes of Ueki to watch before I can see good anime again.

Please forgive my sins.

I really hope you guys are getting something good out of this bet, because right now it looks like you got totally suckered.

Digimon was the weird pokemon ripoff that weird kids watched, and there wasn't a huge trading card game behind it, so the younger me had no interest in it.
Kinda unfortunate since it's probably the better show.

I don't think there's any 'probably' in it - it's definitely superior. Of course, that doesn't make it a good show, just better than Pokemon. You have the added bonus of watching those parts directed by Hosoda as well.

Thanks for your help guys!! I figure that just like with other TV there's lots of crap out there but lots of gems as well, so I'm just trying to find those gems. ;-)

Definitely the better show, but fuck Matt
still makes me salty thinking about him. Digimon was the first foray into the world of NTR for me, I'd imagine that was the case with most folks!
.

Even as the inferior sibling to Pokemon it still sold a lot of merchandise. There WAS a Digimon TCG but obviously wasn't extremely popular. Digimon games were pretty popular though and so were the Digivices.

I have no shame in admitting I've enjoyed some of the Digimon seasons before. Last thing I watched though was Savers which was pretty good, although it has the worst voice actress ever. She's so grating she makes Omigawa sound like an angel.

Hmmm... new key visual. Something here seems... fishy...

Umm does anyone have any news in regard to where we can watch GYO when it airs on feb 13th? I'vebeen searching and can only find the trailer

Also junji Ito = god

Ponyo came on tv on Christmas day, the dub hurt my ears after 45mins I couldn't watch no more, changed the channel to top gear to kill time till doctor who came on.

I can barely watch those Studio Ghibli dubs, even though frankly they're pretty good. It's probably as a result of watching them in Japanese far too often.

Man, why did you have to remind me about the Digivices? For Christmas of 1997 my sister and I both received the very first Digimon virtual pets to come out of Japan. I think they predated the anime by at least a year and the ability to train and battle them blew my tamagotchi-loving mind at the time. I lost mine and the first-gen virtual pets are $70 and up on ebay now :(

For some reason, even though I loved the toy, I never watched more than a few episodes of the show when it finally premiered.

I avoid that problem by not watching them at all until they come out on DVD/Bluray, so I've enjoyed the high quality dubs.

Hi, I'm guessing this is the place where we discuss how anime is currently ruined?

I'll start with the worst..

Guilty Crown 16

Yeah... actually, I don't really care anymore.

Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko OVA:

I totally don't remember what this show was about until the second half of this episode. It's a nice end cap to the events of the final episode of the series and is quite a nice send off for the characters (very little Meme (un)fortunately), touching on the existentialist thread that defined the original tv series.
From what you, and others, have written about the episode it sounds like it's a more fitting 'conclusion' to the series than it's final episode. Unlike say, Usagi Drop, where the OVA's are just a bit of fun this sounds like the 'proper' last episode. I wonder if they couldn't produce it earlier for budget/scheduling reasons?
